Trend is not up nor down, but waving with range trading uptrend throughout December 2008. Just my opinion.

ignore STI rise today..

capitalize of the rise to take profit from yesterday's drop..

This is one of the reason why I am writing a series of posts on the STI ETF. It is a good investment for those who do wish to participate actively in their portfolio i.e. learning trading or picking up financial analysis skills. I think more should be done to promote index funds in general due to their low expenses. Well, like what you said, this is one product which financial insituitions will not promote simply because it will hurt their bottomline.

Too bad, it losses global competitive advantages perhaps! Still wondering either to cut huge paper losses or not?

That is why, buying selecting stock with as low as PTB ratio is a critical/essential criteria rather than its share business performance nowadays. It means lesser subjected to its share price downward risk!

This is the period where stocks are worth more dead than alive. A lot of quality stocks are selling below their book value. In theory, you can liquidate the companies and get more money back than the money you first placed in to buy those companies.

Not quite true... no volume means people have very little interest to sell to the buyer's price in this counter already. Ha... ha... ha...

Global stocks no longer have a very closed link as before, hence, we won't be able expecting stock movement in tandem globally as before yet still closed link regionally. I 'll adopt different style of stock investment approaches starting now and early next year.

I feel slow up bit by bit in the month of Dec 2008. December is SGX market consolidation month I should say. It is good for gradual accumulation of the equity month! Time will prove it.

iPunter      ( Date: 02-Dec-2008 09:56) Posted:

A gradual fall over a long period of time is more agonising than a gap-down followed by a quick rebound...

Slow falls, bit by bit in gradual stages are more difficult to recover..  Smiley

What are students doing losing millions of dollars when they should be concentrating on their studies?!

December 1, 2008 Business Times
Student investors caught in the meltdown, too

Young traders staring at huge paper losses, but hanging on to holdings

(SINGAPORE) The financial meltdown has become a double whammy for some university students - not only has it shrouded job prospects, it has also left them staring at investment losses.

Investment clubs have mushroomed in tertiary institutions here in recent years, with an increasing number of students active in the stock market. And they have not been spared the market meltdown.

One of them, 23-year-old Jason Low from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), said that while the value of his stock portfolio has dropped over the last few months, he is not pushing the panic button just yet. 'Right now, I'm actively trying to buy into more value stocks, because prices have come down,' he said.

Some of his fellow investor friends, however, have not been as lucky. One of them, said Mr Low, has suffered paper losses of $3 million. 'Everyone has been affected - it's just a matter of the scale of our losses. It happens in this kind of market, but my advice is to hold on to what you have for now. It's definitely not the time to sell,' he said.

According to previous reports, some young traders handle up to $200,000, turning to their parents and relatives for financial backing.

You are right, that is why I use PTB as my penny stock picking benchmark. I believe in "Small is beautiful" rather than "Big is empty" no blue chip ( So many trouble blue chips like, Lehman Bros, AIG, UBS, FORTIS, CITI GROUP, GM, FORD, DBS.............etc. lately) but Penny stock in this unprecedented global financial credit crunch/debacle era. It is not risk free but much much more rewarding.

iPunter      ( Date: 28-Nov-2008 15:13) Posted:

Many are basing their decisions and relying on the turn of the business cycle to invest.

But that is in the past.

Yes, 'business cycles' are a thing of the past... With this unprecedented 'turmoil' , with government
financial bailouts being the order of the day to avert crippling the economy, business cycles as we know
it will not exist anymore.

Business expansion and contraction is the result of free market forces in operation.

Then, are we sure we can now rely on the old phenomena to predict the future?...Smiley.

I think i know. Cannot be bank stocks.. too bulky, the most is 2 times gain only.
Must be penny stocks, volatile stocks or even property, china ones etc... Stocks that can go 5 times and above. LOL.

anyway, i'm not aiming to get millions. Just 5-10% is good enough. Don't need so much to live... Just my opinion. LOL.

It will be exactly BBs' with their huge venture capitals that drive the price down to happen, perhap even undershot surpassing my lowest end price level! Cost of production is varied from different producer to other producer in the range of USD 6 to 12/barrel.

Centaur      ( Date: 27-Nov-2008 13:47) Posted:

highly unlikely, if i'm not wrong this price is muchlower than the production cost. Besides, do u think the BBs will allow that to happen?

Hulumas... :)

With all my respects, Sir, for your great purchasing power, since as far as i know, you have been buying in heavily every time the market slackens a bit.

Thus i can understand fully you want the market to go up. You should not ask me 'which way i want the market to go' (i will treat that as mild sarcasm). I am a market follower, so whichever way the market behaves, i am always forever obedient to the market's dictates.

The market beast is the only supreme master... and i will always try to master the bad human tendency to be better than the market itself... Smiley
