Toilet cleaning is too heavy a chore for senior citizen.

This job should be left to the younger person like those of maid's age.

pharoah88      ( Date: 21-Oct-2010 16:55) Posted:

Elderly and exploited

Low-wage workers often subjected to unreasonable rules

Letter from Arthur Lim

I READ with sympathy the letter from Ms Jessie Chong about her father’s experience upon landing a job as a cleaner (“Clean up treatment of cleaners”, Oct 19).

I am not surprised such treatment exists and could be commonplace, especially for senior citizens employed in the cleaning industry.

I have met some elderly cleaners, working for a pittance, who told me that they are expected to remain standing throughout their work hours, even if their assigned areas are spotlessly clean.

I once asked one such cleaner: “The toilet is so well maintained and there is nothing more to clean. Why don’t you just take a seat and rest for a while, and get up to clean the area when the need arises?”

His answer: “No, I can’t because if the supervisor sees me I’ll be fined $50.” When asked, he told me he was paid about $800 a month.

Imagine, if he sat down 16 times in the course of a month, he wouldn’t be paid a cent. What right does the cleaning company have to impose such a penalty?

Of course, everyone likes a clean toilet but expecting a cleaner to stand still like a robot is clearly thoughtless exploitation.

The authorities encourage the elderly to work into their golden years but more can be done to address such abuse.

There must be legislation in place to ensure employers do not have the right to arbitrarily impose financial penalties. If such penalties are imposed there should be a limit to the fine, based on the monthly salary.

Many employers get away with such rules because many of their workers do not know the legality of such practices, thereby opening the door to abuse.

The authorities should take the lead to ensure such abuse is not condoned and act on it rigorously when a complaint is made about a company.

Ok. So the price is dropping and so far, all substantial shareholders have not sold.

So, two possible scenarios now.

1) Selling has no real reason. It's a matter of time when this will rebound.

2). Selling has a real reason - we just don't know what it is for now. Then all vested better get out.

Based on circumstances now, which do we think is the likely scenario? I don't see any in-between scenarios.

SGX definitely owes an explanation on :  Why S-chips listed in SGX  dont perform well. What action should be taken.

Most S-chips dont adopt  'share buy-back' also.

yummygd      ( Date: 15-Oct-2010 15:49) Posted:

I say some s chip really should not be listed at all. especially counters like china milk etc. i think sgx should be held responsible for not finding out that e company is giving fake accounts. We trust that SGX did their homework before allowing the company to list but apparently they did not..I am lucky i never listen to the experts buy call to buy china milk but alot of people did n their money kena stuck. that is not fair.

Why those lousy S-chips companies are holding up all our investors money??  Why isnt SGX do something about this?

Penny S-chips can dont move for one year etc..........what is this ??

Its not hard. Just track the Europe trends from 3pm onwards and see how it affects STI. They usually follow the same trend. GentingSP is a component stock of STI, so it will usually follow the same trend. But on certain days, it doesn't. So have to be flexible and adapt to the market condition.

MAS will be the first to jump if our bank facing deep shits! If we see problems, our government will take action years before .  Right now, the good decision by  our government already sounded out of merging the banks i..e DBS and UOB merged and going oversea expansion and leaving OCBC serving the local market............ no further talk so far.   Below clippings for info  reading up ---------

No plans for local banks consolidation: MAS

SINGAPORE: The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said it's up to the banks to evaluate the merits of any merger in Singapore.

Meanwhile analysts said there's no indication that the local banks are heading in that direction unless there is a policy shift first.

This follows comments by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew who said that Singapore was "too small" for three banks at an industry event last Friday.

At a recent dialogue session, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said Singapore's local banks may need to consolidate if they want to compete successfully overseas.

Some analysts agree and they said the three banks, DBS, OCBC and UOB, will need to double their current market capitalisation in order to compete effectively with foreign players like Standard Chartered or Citibank.

Moh Tze Yang, lead analyst, SIAS Research, said: "If you look at it in terms of Singapore's entire banking system, by combining our two strongest banks, this bank will be able to compete internationally. OCBC will service the local market.

“In terms of going overseas, it would make sense to combine the two biggest ones. But as the current situation stands and if a consolidation occurs, we still maintain that OCBC would be the primary target to be absorbed in."

But while the combined bank would emerge stronger, local SMEs who enjoy better interest rates from local banks would be dealt a blow with fewer players left in the market.

However, there could be possible benefits to consumers in the long run.

Anand Srinivasan, associate professor, Department of Finance, NUS Business School, said: "Any consolidation might result in a lower cost of capital to the bank and this lower costs are then in turn passed on to the consumers. In terms of lower interest rates on notes, that might be a long term benefit.

“But then one would have to ask the question as to why the banks would pass on the benefits. They don't necessarily have an incentive to do that especially because of the lower degree of competition."

Observers added that any consolidation would be driven by policy shifts rather than market forces.

In a statement, MAS said it does not and cannot dictate the precise number or configuration of local banks

MAS said while it has encouraged the local banks to consolidate in the past to benefit from economies of scale, it does not and cannot dictate the precise number or configuration of local banks.

It added that even as the local banks seek to expand abroad, there must be a competitive domestic banking sector which provides a full suite of financial services to consumers.

The three local banks declined to comment. - CNA/vm/ls
