Feb 9: China rate hike may weigh on Singapore stocks, Total Access in focus
WRITTEN BY THOMSON REUTERS

Singapore shares may see a weak start on Wednesday, as China's move to hike interest rates is likely to dampen investor sentiment despite higher Wall Street indices overnight.

Singapore's benchmark Straits Times Index < .FTSTI> fell 0.21% on Tuesday to 3,185.36 points.

China raised interest rates on Tuesday for the second time in just over six weeks, intensifying a battle in the fast-expanding economy against stubbornly high inflation that threatens to unsettle global markets.

Here are some stocks to watch:

Total Access Communication, Thailand's second-largest mobile operator, may be in focus after it said on Tuesday it would delist from the Singapore stock exchange within three years, saying it gained little from dual listings.

Offshore services firm  Federal International  said it expects to report a loss for the fourth quarter due to impairment on its debt and assets. It will announce its full-year results by March 1.

Memstar Technology  and  United Envirotech  will form a joint venture to undertake a 280 million yuan (US$42.7 million) project that requires them to acquire, upgrade and operate a wastewater treatment and recycling plant in China.

Food Junction, which operates food courts, said it has appointed Gan Chee Teik as its chief financial officer with effect from Feb 8, replacing John Chang Tong Wah.

SINGAPORE

The  market closed slightly down on Tuesday. The Straits Times index is currently very close to its horizontal support at 3180. 30% of the index constituents closed above their 20D MA on Tuesday (vs 47% on Monday).

DBS Group  (DBS) is in the process of launching a range of offshore products denominated in the Chinese yuan (DJ).

Wilmar International  (WIL) said it won approval from the Securities & Exchange Commission of Ghana to acquire Benso Oil Palm Plantation. In other news, the Co plans to invest $900m to construct crude palm oil derivatives plants in Indonesia, according to the Industry Minister of Indonesia

STI sitting at support around 3185.

If Shanghai decides to rally today, STI will bounce up like a coiled spring to around 3200.

If Shanghai decides to tank because of interest rate hike, STI will break support at 3180 and find support further down at around 3160.

BullishTempo      ( Date: 09-Feb-2011 03:15) Posted:

The earlier hike was a bank reserve ratio hike, not interest rate hike.

The previous hike was fully factored into the market so the market rallied the next day.

Tomorrow really depends on Shanghai. Much of this news might have factored into STI on Monday and Tuesday already.

Hi guys a quick update.

Just received news that the China rate hike is over and done with.

STI cleared 3200 and going towards 3220.

Target is 3250 before January is over.

Tonight FOMC meeting in the US. As long as FOMC is positive tone, rally will continue tomorrow for STI. Analysts expect FOMC meeting to be positive.

Many counters turning up from bearish tone and indicators are turning up.

This could be the time to buy-in, now that interest rate hike is over.

Stock Code:  GENS.SI
Company:  Genting Singapore
Slug:  Call raised to BUY as big spenders roll in
Date of Report:  07/02/2011
Producer:  Mark Laudi

AmFraser analyst Gan Huey Ling is upgrading Genting Singapore to a BUY from a HOLD, with a price target of S$2.60, up from S$2.13, because she thinks the casino will make more money than expected, and other attractions at Resorts World Sentosa are yet to become well known with visitors.

Promotions, marketing campaigns and increased bus services should drive both.

The number of gaming tables should increase to 560 from 500 to cater for increased number of high rollers.

So-called junket operators, who bring in the big spenders, should also be licensed soon. Junket operators frequently provide local currency loans to mainland Chinese gamblers beyond the US$50,000 they are allowed to convert into hard currency.

The number of visitors should rise from 26,000 per day last year to 30,000 per day this year.

Universal Studios should see an increase from 10,000 a day to 18,000.

Battlestar Galactica should reopen after the ride was closed shortly after opening, and other attractions should welcome visitors this year, driving attendance.

Currently, there are up to 150 buses from Malaysia heading to Resorts World Sentosa.

Profit margins should slip slightly to 46% from 50%, as commissions are paid to junket operators, and higher payouts are made to high rollers.

Looking at Macau, says Gan, the growth trajectory should be higher than what she had factored in previously.

~INVESTOR CENTRAL’S TAKE~
Genting Singapore’s current ratios (by Reuters):
P/E: -
P/B: 9.52x
Free cashflow for FY2009: - S$2.068 bln vs - S$723 mln

Analysts surveyed by Reuters have on average an OUTPERFORM call on the stock with a price target of S$2.48, compared to its last traded price of S$2.06.

Genting Singapore uptrend not in danger - AmFraser

Tags:  AmFraser  |  Genting Singapore

WRITTEN BY DOW JONES & CO, INC
TUESDAY, 08 FEBRUARY 2011 16:18
smaller text tool iconmedium text tool iconlarger text tool icon
AmFraser analyst Najeeb Jarhom says recent downward pressure on Genting Singapore (G13.SG) “should not endanger” the stock’s recent uptrend so long as the price holds above the key $1.84-$1.92 breakout points.

However, the house reckons resistance will stay in place at the $2.12-$2.22 band for now. The stock is +0.5% at $2.07.

“Frequent testing of lower end of $2.00-$2.22 must have left traders edgy” but minimum weekly closing prices since mid-September remain well above weekly lows, which ”should neutralize some of their fears.“

It pegs a near-term target price at $2.12-$2.16.

Admittedly " going with the trend" is the height of market wisdom.

But in this regard, the hardest truth of all is how does one go with

a trend when there's no way to tell the trend? (*no indicator can predict a trend)

A trend can only be observed to happen as it occurs.

Only the market itself can show its own trend.

This is immediately evident from the very utterances

of analysts who invariably qualify their often profound analyses

with terms like 'may', 'should', 'probably', 'be cautious',

'at your own risk', etc. None can commit on a firm prediction.

But analyst will invariably be honestly proud when their

assumptions turn out to be correct... Smiley

ehh... time your entry, go with the trend of the counter and general market.

TA is a reference, just to support or provide you with the confidence that this entry is nicely timed entry...

dunno if its a good example.. but..just like playing guess small or big.... if big open 20 times and small open 1 time.. what are the odds big will open?.. what are the odds small will open?... no one knows )

I understand where you are coming from...

and I am not trying to beat around the bush... :)

If you can  the lines, (and also between), you will know

what I am saying is that TA is only a reference for our betting...

And that the simpler our TA, the better

and the more 'indepth' or complicated our TA,

it makes absolutely no difference to the betting...

because all is still betting (on the outcome)... Smiley

STI off 0.2% but long-term uptrend intact - SIAS Research

Singapore’s STI is down 0.2% at 3184.91 points, weighed by developers and banks on worries about more potential China tightening measures.

Volumes are thin in the broader market with 785.4 million shares worth $813.9 million traded.

Market breadth is negative with losers outnumbering winners 197 to 164. However, SIAS Research says investors shouldn’t “lose sight of the bigger picture as the long-term upward trend is still strong.”

The house notes corporate earnings appear to be improving and valuations are still attractive relative to bonds. Also, “huge amount of cash still remain on the sidelines” and “all the long-term (technical) indicators are still positive.”

Support is expected at 3180. CityDev (C09.SG) is down 1.9% at $11.18, Hongkong Land (H78.SG) is down 1.1% at $6.92, CapitaLand (C31.SG) falls 1.1% to $3.57. DBS Group (D05.SG) is down 0.4% at $15.12, UOB (U11.SG) eases 0.9% to $19.12 and OCBC (O39.SG) declines 0.8% to $9.75.
