Of course, buying shares based on Net asset backing is just a safe bet.  But it does not mean that if a share is undervalued from its NAV you are sure to make gains immediately.  The market might dislike the business or it might have adverse info about the company such as it about to lose a contract or other losses that may neutralise the NAV later.

I would think that by obtaining the instrinsic value of a company is a better bet; ie, it will let one knows the real worth/value of the company's share is. Hence, it will allow one to make a decision when to buy or sell a particular stock.

What do you guys think?

Net Asset Value(NAV) Per share

Calculated as : Total coy assets less liabilities and preference capital divided by d no of ordinary shares outstanding.

NAV is a theoritical value of a coy that remains if all d assets were liquidated at values carried on d balance sheet n then all liabilities paid off. This figure is adjusted for bonus n right issue, stock splits n new share issue.

Market Capitalization (Mkt Cap)

Calculated as: Share price x no of ordinary shares outstanding. Ds figure refers to d total market value of a listed coy.

From wiki:

Net asset value (NAV) is a term used to describe the value of an entity's assets less the value of its liabilities. The term is most commonly used in relation to open-ended or mutual funds due to the fact that shares of such funds are redeemed at their net asset value. However, the term may also be used as a synonym for book value or the equity value of a business. Net asset value may represent the value of the total equity, or it may be divided by the number of shares outstanding and, thereby, represent the per share net asset value.

There is no universal method of valuing assets and liabilities for the purposes of calculating net asset value, and the criteria used for the valuation will depend upon the circumstances, the purposes of the valuation and any regulations that may apply.

Anyway, the finance report will have NAV, a bi weekly Share investment book, have all the NAV in the book, it is easy to refer.
