Plantation: Threat to local palm sector.

Local palm oil downstream players in the refining, oleochemicals and biodiesel sectors will likely see their operations rendered as uncompetitive with stagnating profit margins following Indonesia's latest proposal to restructure its palm oil export duty on refined palm-oil products.

The proposed duty structure will be 10 basis point lower, based on the average crude palm oil (CPO) spot prices at the Rotterdam market.

Banking: Maybank open to RHB deal if the price is right.

Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), which called off merger talks with RHB Capital Bhd in June, is still keeping its options open for a possible acquisition, if the price is right. President-cum-chief executive officer Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said RHB was a very good bank and the combination between Maybank and RHB could create a significant amount of synergy, resulting in a significant shareholder value creation.

LED Lightbulbs, Your New Wireless Transmitter

Using flashing LED  lightbulbs to transmit digital information is not something that is new.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) has been around for at least a couple of years.

But this year, German researchers from Berlin's Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications managed to crank up the technology's speeds to 800Mbps, setting a new speed record.

Such technology is ideal for using on planes and hospitals where rampant Wi-Fi signals may interfere with sensitive electronic equipment, and are banned.

From the looks of things however, adoption of VLC may still be a few years away from being commercially available, so you may have to hold on to your dinky Wi-Fi router for a couple more years.

One obvious barrier to adoption of this new technology is the fact that it can be easily blocked by opaque objects.

But benefits of such technology are plenty, such as utilizing LEDs for both light and information, cutting down the need for additional and expensive equipment.

Acoording to ISPreview, costs of converting LEDs into ultra-fast networks are also very low, making it an affordable alternative to conventional networking systems, ideal in environments like offices where lights are perpetually turned on.

Singapore ahead in the losing game?

Letter from Leong Sze Hian

I refer to the article “IRs here have not created more gambling addicts: CRA” (July 30). On the call for greater transparency regarding the number of Singaporeans entering the casinos, it states that Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) chief executive Lau Peet Meng had agreed that the legality of the information — and how it is shared — could be looked into more carefully.

I find it strange that the Casino Control Act can be crafted such that statistics on how many Singaporeans are entering the two casinos may not be revealed. I have read the Act and am unable to find such a prohibition. Can the CRA point out the specific section(s)?

Then how was the former Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister able to disclose last September in Parliament that more than a million Singapore residents had visited the casinos since they opened?

While CRA chairman Richard Magnus said last week that it was an “urban legend that quite a number of our (residents) frequent the casinos” and had cited an Institute of Mental Health study that gambling addiction numbers remain the same, surely giving the statistics on Singaporean visitors would be the best way to end speculation that more are gambling.

And it is not just how many are gambling another aspect of the issue is how much they are losing and the social consequences.

United Kingdom-based gaming consultancy H2 Gambling Capital ranked Singapore No 2 in the world last year for gambling losses, at €822 (S$1,409) per adult resident. If we add the S$100 daily casino entrance levy (and the annual S$2,000 levy), might we be No 1, ahead of Australia’s €902?

Give a breakdown of the stats

I refer to the article “Job growth slows” (July 30). The Manpower Ministry aggregates the unemployment rates of Singaporeans and Permanent Residents to provide a figure on the unemployment situation.

This does not provide a clear picture of the unemployment rate among citizens. PRs are foreign nationals and many of them, due to long-term work arrangements, convert from employment pass holders to PRs. In this case, many PRs would be employed.

It would be better if the team in charge of providing these national statistics give a breakdown for citizens and PRs, followed by an aggregate figure to show the overall economic situation in Singapore.

It shouldn’t be left to market forces

It is simplistic for the Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore to suggest that the “Private home market should be left to market forces: Redas” (July 29).

In the face of possible bubbles building up to untenable levels, the Government has taken responsible steps to cool the residential property market. If those measures have limited effect, the authorities have the right to monitor and intervene where necessary.

Leaving it to market forces to make price corrections could lead to an undesirable impact on the economy. No responsible government will intervene in markets without good reason. We have seen interventions by governments to stabilise currency and equity markets and to bring them to more sensible levels. The property market is no exception.

The rapid rise in housing prices here is partly due to unbridled speculation caused by excess liquidity and easy access to funds at low interest rates. If private home prices are left unchecked, it could lead to a property bubble.

Therefore, timely government intervention should not be discouraged or criticised but, in fact, commended.

Let’s fly the Singapore flag

Letter from Chan Hean Boon

WITH less than a week to go before Singapore celebrates 46 years of independence, it saddens me to see very few individuals displaying our flag outside their flats.

I’d like to think that Singaporeans are perhaps too busy to make the effort in taking out the flag or they are simply too reserved to openly show their love for Singapore. However, I believe the influx of foreigners over the past few years may have slowly eroded our affection for this country, and Singaporeans no longer have the passion to fly the flag.

I urge Singaporeans to publicly show their love for Singapore.

While flying the flag is one of many ways to express our love, it is time we make a statement. It is never too late to bring out the flag. Show what it means to be true Singaporeans, who come together and stay united regardless of race, language or religion.

SINGAPORE: A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) full—time National Serviceman (NSF) died on Tuesday during a navigation exercise.

Specialist Cadet (SCT) Ee Chun Sheng, 21, was found unconscious at about 5.11pm while participating in the exercise at Ama Keng Training Area at Lim Chu Kang.

An SAF medic went on site and tried to resuscitate SCT Ee at about 5.15pm. The serviceman was evacuated via a safety vehicle to the Tengah Air Base Medical Centre and arrived at about 5.39pm where an SAF doctor attended to him.

SCT Ee was then sent by ambulance to the National University Hospital (NUH) at 6.05pm and arrived at 6.32pm. SAF doctor and medic continued to resuscitate him enroute to the hospital.

SCT Ee was pronounced dead at 9.03pm at NUH.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late SCT Ee. The SAF is assisting the family in their time of grief and is investigating the incident.

Maid jailed, fined S$130,000 for illegal moneylending activities

Maid jailed, fined S$130,000 for illegal moneylending activities

SINGAPORE:

A Filipino maid wanted to help her employer who hired her despite her epilepsy and who also paid for her medical bills.

28—year—old, Melanie Jacalan Munar, agreed to help her employer, Koh Suat Lay, run an illegal money—lending business between early 2008 and November last year.

Together, they gave out loans totalling more than S$3,000 to four Filipino women, with interest rates of up to 50 per cent.

Munar was sentenced Tuesday to three months’ jail and fined S$130,000 after pleading guilty to five out of seven charges.

Because she was not able to pay the fine, she will be jailed an additional three weeks and six days.

This is believed to be the first case where an employer—employee pair was hauled to court on illegal moneylending charges.

Cosco Q2 profit slumps to s$31.9 million after 74% increase in tax payments

Singapore-listed Chinese shipbuilder Cosco Corp said yesterday its secondquarter net profit more than halved due to higher tax payments and weaker performance of its dry bulk shipping and shipyard operations.

Net profit for the three months ended June 30 was s$31.9 million, down from s$68.4 million in the corresponding period a year earlier, Cosco said. Revenue rose 3.5 per cent in the second quarter to S$996 million.

The company paid s$25 million in income tax in the quarter, a 74-per-cent increase, due to changes in the tax exemption status of its shipping profits and the reduction of tax breaks to some of its units, it added.

Cosco’s order book now stands at US $7 billion (s$8.4 billion), with deliveries scheduled through the first half of 2014, it said, adding that it received new orders amounting to US $1.8 billion in the January-June period this year.

Overweight | s$1.42

Morgan Stanley maintains rating at Overweight cuts target price to S$1.90 from S$2.60.

It says: “We expect 2011 to be bad with losses peaking in 2Q11 at US$103 million following a delay in the expected (freight) rate hike in June. Higher bunker fuel costs and lower utilisations will also lift operating costs.”

However, MS also says that nearterm negatives provide a good entry point and that NOL is “very wellpositioned for 2012 and beyond”.
