At PM Lee's press conference he said 3 office bearers wanted out even before the Election 2011, i.e. DPM Wong (Home Affairs), Mah Bow Tan (MND) & Raymong Lim (Tpt) but he managed to talk them out to defer till now.

Aren't these MIWs  cowards? Knowing that they lives would be difficult  with  strong opposition like  Chen Show Mao coming to Parliament to question them, they decided to jump ship b4 everybody else.  Do u think they deserve the  $Million salary paid? and should they be asked to repay back to redempt miseries caused by their negligence or incompetence.

Summary: The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has upgraded Singapore’s growth forecast for 2011 to 5.0-7.0%, up from its previous forecast of 4.0-6.0%

this after the economy recorded a strong growth in the first quarter. In 1Q11, Singapore’s economy grew by 8.3% YoY, spot on the street’s expectations. On a seasonally-adjusted QoQ annualized basis, the economy expanded by 22.5%, compared to 3.9% in 4Q10. Growth was broad based and led by the manufacturing industry, which expanded by 75.4% QoQ, compared to a small growth of 0.7% in 4Q10. The increase was driven by higher production in the biomedical manufacturing, precision engineering and electronic clusters. The construction sector grew by 13.3% QoQ, reversing the contraction in the preceding two quarters, and was largely driven by an increase in public sector construction activities. The financial sector grew by 27.1% QoQ, following the 16.9% increase in 4Q10, due to increased lending and insurance activities. Tourism-related hotels & restaurants sector and “other services” sector remained robust, with QoQ growth rates of 9.7% and 2.9%, respectively.(Research Team)

Soup base changed already but whether the herb is changed, we need to wait and see.

Can believe his sincerity but not the PR BS statement on his 3 minister wanting to leave ?

So we finally found the weakness in the PAP, it is the crowd at rally and the loss GRC.

Also, as I mentioned before, ministers are  just figurehead in a ministry as the portfilio can be switch like a switch.

Yes, agreed... this is a big step ahead for Singapore. That psycological barrier has been somewhat overcome. Not totally, but a big step nonetheless. And a wake up call for the incumbent. Unfortunately, it is not enough to vote against policies that are infavourable and only benefiting papies and high flyers.

Once upon a time.. Ong TC wanted to do his duty to check the reserves.. what did he get in return? Did he get a state funeral? No.. he was the only president who was not given a State Funeral.. and why? Becoz he asked to do his presidential duty? Was that it? Coz he refused to be a puppet? And Singaporeans give their mandate for that? So who the heck is looking in on the reserves and what is done with it? Goshhhhhh.... whatever we are told, nobody can verify? Not even the president?

So many questions.. where are the answers?

Water supply at Block 686B Woodlands Drive 73 is safe: PUB

Water supply at Block 686B Woodlands Drive 73 is safe: PUB

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s national water agency PUB, has released a statement saying that the water supply at Block 686B Woodlands Drive 73 has been tested and is safe for drinking.

The building’s water supply was shut off on Monday morning after the discovery of a dead body in the water storage tank.

Although water was restored around 2am on Tuesday, residents are still squeamish about using water from the tap.

According to the statement, the first three floors of the building are served directly from PUB’s water mains, while the fourth to fifteenth floors are served by two sets of four high—level tanks.

The body was found in one of the high—level tanks.

When the body was discovered, Sembawang Town Council had isolated both sets of tanks serving the block.

The contaminated set of tanks was cut off from the building and left alone for police investigations.

The other set of tanks, while unaffected, was sterilised and flushed on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.

PUB said that it is this unaffected set of tanks that is currently serving the block.

The cleaning process involved emptying the water tanks and physically cleaning and washing the walls and floors of the tanks. The tanks were then sterilised using a concentrated form of cleaning solution containing chlorine.

After sterilisation, the chlorinated water was discharged and the tanks flushed again and filled up with fresh PUB water.

PUB officers tested the water using samples taken from the water tanks and pipes. Results confirmed that the water was safe for consumption before the Town Council reinstated the water supply to residents.

Residents have been advised to leave their taps running for about five minutes to clear their internal pipes as a precaution.

PUB officers have been and will continue their door—to—door visits to reassure residents who still have concerns about their water supply.

Residents can contact PUB’s 24—Hour call centre at 1800—2846600 should they have any concerns with their water supply.

SPP, SDP comment on Cabinet shake—up

SPP, SDP comment on Cabinet shake—up

Chiam See Tong, SPP

SINGAPORE : Singapore People’s Party (SPP) Secretary—General Chiam See Tong said credit for the new Cabinet change should go to Singaporeans who voted for the opposition.

In an email to Channel NewsAsia, he said they have " forced a change within the People’s Action Party" .

Mr Chiam also asked why Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng did not let voters of Bishan—Toa Payoh know before Polling Day that he would be retiring from Cabinet.

He said it would have affected the way they voted.

Mr Chiam anchored a five—member SPP team that lost to the PAP team led by DPM Wong in the May 7 General Election.

Separately, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has asked the new ministers to articulate new policies soon.

In his email response to the new Cabinet change, Secretary—General of the SDP Chee Soon Juan said he looks forward to seeing each new minister come out over the next few days and weeks to clearly articulate new policies and initiatives.

He said he expects to see policies that are significantly different.

Otherwise, he said, it will be clear message that it is politics—as—usual.

New Cabinet signals govt’s commitment to start with clean slate

New Cabinet signals govt’s commitment to start with clean slate

Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE : Several new MP office holders said the changes in Cabinet show that the government is serious about change.

The last time a newly—elected MP was appointed minister was in 1984, when Dr Richard Hu was appointed Trade and Industry Minister after winning the Kreta Ayer seat.

Mr Heng Swee Keat, the former Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), is now Education Minister.

He was the first director of higher education at the Ministry of Education (MOE) between 1995 and 1997, overseeing higher education policies involving ITEs, polytechnics and universities, and hence not new to the ministry.

" I’m very humbled by PM, entrusting me with this very important responsibility. My team and I will have to do our best to take this education system forward," said Mr Heng.

He added: " I think what will be very useful for someone new like me, is to be able to hear the diverse viewpoints and to forge agreements on what we need to do. I think one of the things we need to do is to forge partnerships with different groups in order to achieve the desired outcome."

Mr Heng said this is to ensure citizens are prepared to meet the challenges of globalisation, and to build character and values in youths, and a caring and gracious society.

Brigadier—General Tan Chuan—Jin and Mr Lawrence Wong have been appointed as Ministers of State.

They said even with a new team, the government will be mindful of fundamentals, and with new challenges, new responses are needed to tackle problems.

Brigadier—General Tan, who is MP for Marine Parade GRC said: " Policies have a very real impact on people’s lives and these are things that can’t be taken academically. And I think it’s important to — in the process of making policies — to study and learn.

" So for me is really to level myself up as quickly as I can to understand the issues at hand, and as fast as possible, be able to contribute in a meaningful way in the whole policy making process, as well as the delivery of the policy to the population at large. And to make sure that the policies are implemented in the correct spirit."

Mr Wong, MP for West Coast GRC said: " It’s not just about knowing what are the right ways to design policies I think increasingly it’s about knowing how to explain, how to engage, and to convince people these are the policies that we have and to sell the policies better."

New face Ms Sim Ann has been appointed as Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Law.

She said: " The first priority for me is to really learn a lot more about the work that both ministries do. The second thing is to listen with a heart. The third approach is really to embrace partnership with the civil service, with community organisations and associations, and also very importantly, with the public."

PM Lee announces changes to Cabinet

PLAN  B  ? ? ? ?

PM Lee announces changes to Cabinet

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced changes to his Cabinet line—up, which he said reflects the urgency of the need to prepare for leadership succession.

Three ministers will leave the Cabinet, and out of 14 ministries, 11 will have new ministers in charge.

Speaking at a news conference at the Istana on Wednesday, Mr Lee said it is an epochal change as Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew are leaving the Cabinet.

Mr Lee said he has accepted both former Prime Ministers’ decisions to step down from Cabinet. They had announced on Saturday that they intended to make way for a younger generation of leaders to take over.

Both men had decided to step down after the elections, and Mr Lee rejected suggestions that it’s because that could have had a negative impact on the PAP’s performance in the election.

Mr Lee in particular thanked SM Goh for mentoring him in politics.

Mr Lee said Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is appointed as the senior advisor to Government Investment Corporation of Singapore (GIC).

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong is appointed as senior advisor to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and been given the title Emeritus Senior Minister.

Three more ministers will be retiring.

They are Deputy Prime Minister and Co—ordinating Minister for National Security Wong Kan Seng, National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan and Transport Minister and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Raymond Lim.

Out of 14 ministries, 11 will have new ministers in charge.

Mr Lee said this will be a fresh team that will look at the future with a clean slate.

PM Lee said: " I think this is a Cabinet we lined up after the elections. Certainly the outcome of the elections affected my thinking in deciding how to make this Cabinet. I wanted a fresh start, and that’s why I’ve gone for a radical change.

" There is a significant continuity with the previous Cabinet in terms of key members who are involved. Tharman and Teo Chee Hean have worked with me for quite many years, and so have a good number of the ministers who are continuing. So it’s a combination of continuity and change, but it’s a fresh presentation, a fresh line—p and we’re going to take a fresh approach."

Mr Lee said there will be two Deputy Prime Ministers.

They are current Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean who will remain Deputy Prime Minister and will be Home Affairs Minister and Co—ordinating Minister for National Security.

PM Lee also said the three ministers who are retiring had asked to do so before the elections, but Mr Lee only agreed to let them retire now.

Mr Teo’s Defence portfolio will be taken over by current Education Minister Ng Eng Hen.

The other Deputy Prime Minister is Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam who will retain his Finance portfolio and also be Manpower Minister.

The new Education Minister will be newly—elected MP Heng Swee Keat.

Newly—elected MP Major—General Chan Chun Sing will be Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports as well as Minister of State for Information, Communication and the Arts.

One of the big changes Mr Lee had to deal with is the loss of Mr George Yeo as Foreign Minister, which he described as " grievous" . Mr Lee said he will speak to Mr Yeo to see how he can tap into his experience.

The new Foreign Minister is Mr K Shanmugam, who will concurrently hold the Law portfolio.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan will become National Development Minister, a portfolio he volunteered for, and Mr Lee said he’s backing Mr Khaw with a very strong team.

It includes two Ministers of State, with a newly—elected MP, Tan Chuan—Jin.

Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong will be the Health Minister.

The Minister for Environment and Water Resources, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, will head the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts.

Information, Communication and the Arts Minister Lui Tuck Yew will be Transport Minister and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan will be the new Minister for Environment and Water Resources.

Education Minister Ng Eng Hen will be Defence Minister.

Mr Lim Hng Kiang will remain Trade and Industry Minister.

Mr Lim Swee Say will remain as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Mr Lee said the team is prepared to look at everything from scratch, and explained what he’s looking for in the new leadership.

" Proven performance and potential as well as political touch. So then, putting them in deep, at the deep end it’s not easy to come in and become a minister, whether acting or full. But I believe they can do it and I’m testing them out," said Mr Lee.

He said there will be a mid—term review in about 2 years, and the new appointments will take effect on Saturday, May 21, which is when the Cabinet will be sworn in.

Meanwhile, several promotions and changes of portfolio were also announced for office holders.

Mr S Iswaran will be promoted to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry.

Senior Minister of State Ms Grace Fu for Education and National Development will become Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts and Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office Mr Heng Chee How will be promoted to Senior Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office.

Madam Halimah Yacob will be promoted to be the Minister of State for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.

Also promoted, Ms Josephine Teo who will be Minister of State for Finance and Transport.

Newly—elected MPs Mr Tan Chuan Jin and Lawrence Wong will be appointed Ministers of State.

Brigadier General Tan will be Minister of State for National Development and Manpower, Mr Lawrence Wong will be Minister of State for Defence and Education, Ms Amy Khor will be Minister of State for Health.

Mr Teo Ser Luck will be Minister of State for Trade and Industry.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower, Mr Lee Yi Shyan will be Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development.

Minister of State for Home Affairs and Education Mr Masagos Zulkifli will be Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs.

As for the Senior Parliamentary Secretaries, Mr Hawazi Daipi will swop Health for Education but still remain Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower.

Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman will add on Defence to his portfolio of National Development, and Mr Sam Tan will take on Foreign Affairs and Community Development Youth and Sports.

Newly—elected MP, Ms Sim Ann will become Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Law.

Finally, Mr Lee said Mr Tharman will be Chairman of the MAS.

Prime Minister Lee will be the Chairman of the GIC.
