Advice......dun chase if you have already missed the boat earlier. Remember the risk vs reward ratio! All the best. If masterlim not around..... something is fishy...

PostPosted: Fri Dec 10, 2010 1:59 pm    Post subject: Kudos! Genting Sp Refinance Loan, A Timely & Wise Move! Reply with quote

It is undeniably that Singapore has made a dramatic entry into the casino-gaming mkt since legalizing it in 2005.
2011 will be the 1st full year of operations for the 2 IRs in the Republic.
Following are some of the interesting estimates made by some of the investment banks/institutions:
PwC : Projected that Singapore's casino revenue to be US$2,8 billion this year and would leapfrog both Australia and S Korea by reaching US$5.5 billion next year(2011)!
CLSA : Projected even more explosive growth for Singapore casino mkt to be worth US$6.5 billion by 2011, matching the Las Vegas Strip and surpassing it in 2012 with a mkt size of US$8.1 billion!
That would easily put Singapore's revenue in the no.2 slot in the Asia-Pacific, behind on Macau
The both timely and wise move by the GSP's management team to take advantage of the positive current development/situation to go into and secure a refinance loan AT THIS JUNCTURE is most commendable!
With such good business sense and skills, the new terms in the new Term Loan could only be, one need not ask, BETTER!
Congrats to all Genting Singapore shareholders!

In singapore, people are more than willing to buy property when the price plunge.

goondoo      ( Date: 30-Dec-2010 09:37) Posted:

Actually this is the risk that Singapore banks face and weighing on their share prices.

The loan book for the Sg banks for property has grown from below 30% several years ago to 50% currently at end 2010.

It is very risky for the banks to put all their eggs in one basket or rather all their loans on property, diversification is the key  to managing risks.

However, the banks have no choice, manufacturing sector is dwindling in Singapore despite the govt's best efforts and so are manufacturing loans.

Construction is slowing down after the 2 IRs are completed as well as the recent anti speculation moves on property.

The SG banks have to way to maintain their loan books and have no choice but to squeeze into the property loan market.

This proves to be the Archilles heel for SG banks and their share price as we all know the US banks collapse due to the sub-prime crisis which is closely linked to loans to the property and real estate market when the US property bubble burst in 2007. Property prices are highly sentiment driven and extremely illiquid and considered very high risk for the SG banks. When property prices plunge rapidly, it will be very difficult to find a buyer even if you are trying to sell at a huge discount to valuation and valuation will drop every day.

What about this scenario:

OCBC and POSB merge and build more local customers base =  Better saving interest rates for we , singaporeans

goondoo      ( Date: 30-Dec-2010 10:26) Posted:

I think it is the other way round.

OCBC with the largest market cap for banks in SG (20% bigger than UOB) is more likely to make a forceful acquisition for UOB (smallest bank market cap) when the time is ripe.

It is a scenario of the big (OCBC) shark eats the small fish (UOB), but I don't think it will happen anytime soon as OCBC needs to expand agressive further so that it will become much bigger than UOB in a few years time.

DBS (currently same mkt cap as OCBC) may play bad guy and make a forceful acquisition for UOB first just like 10 years ago when DBS first make a take over offer for OUB.

OCBC may come up from behind and make a more attractive offer to take over UOB just like 10 years ago when UOB came up with a better offer to take over OUB.

UOB most likely will agree to the take-over by OCBC as it is a better match than with DBS as both OCBC and UOB are privately owned banks.

So finally the curtains will come down and we will have 2 banks as commented by some govt person. But it may be a few years down the road before this happens.
