Hi Alligator, thank you for your comment and recommendation. I first bought Unit Trusts through my bank. Then someone recommended fundsupermart to me. Since then, I have opened an account and bought some Trust Funds through them. I have heard of STI ETF. But haven't find out the ins and outs of what it is all about yet. I shall bear that in mind. Once again thanks!

hi since you are already in UT, you must have lready leanrt that you need to pay upfront sales charge ranging 2.5% to 4.5%. if that is what you prefer, you should take a look at doing UT investment directly with FundSupermart, they charge much less on sales charge http://www.fundsupermart.com/main/articleFiles/E-Newsletter/SG/04_JUL_2009_en.html Next consideration is just play STI ETF, this trade like stock! and has dividend. Can also use CPF.

Hi junction, thank you for your comment. I understand what you are saying. But Unit Trusts do serve, and it's a way for clueless people like me to make some money. I know, not all Trust funds make money but then again, not all shares make money. I believe there are good, reputable fund houses and fund managers out there. Just have to be careful where you park your money and with who. I guess one has to pay the price for being clueless.

Yes. Yes, but it depends on the fund manager's management/performance of the individual fund management houses!

UT are for those who are absolutely clueless what the managers do with their money. If you think they invest to make money for you, you are partially correct because they first make money for themselves, the balance is for you. One key indicator is the expense ratio. But management fees, which they will pocket from the fund even if they lose your shirt for you, is only one of the many ways your money can disappear bit by bit under management. If you learn how your money is spent then you will not likely touch UT with a ten foot pole. Singaporegal asked a pertinent question.

Hi Singaporegal, thank you for your reply. Point taken. I didn't know much about investments and thought Unit Trusts are a safer way to make some money. I will slowly switch over to stocks.

Hi Freeme, thank you for your comment. I invested in Unit Trusts because I was clueless about the ins and outs of stocks - am still clueless after half a year here. I think I will keep a couple of good Unit Trust Funds and slowly switch to Stocks. Most of the Trust funds was bought when it was all time high. Guess, I will wait till it recovers a bit before doing the switch.

The moment you buy UT you have already lost money because you need to pay management fees. Most UTs have lost money in the past year and couldn't even out-perform the STI. Why pay someone else to lose money for you? |

I started if unit trust on fund supermart, then slowly get my interest more and slowly more towards stocks investing itself. Unit trust is good for newbies or those ppl who are nt really finance savvy ppl to invest in a basket of stocks. Or for those who wan to invest in areas where we can hardly invest directly in eg russia or brazil... or some other wulu places. I still have a UT portfolio, but will slowly sell them out once it looks nicer and concentrate more on individual stocks itself. |
