x 0 x 0 Alert Admin	According to a Citigroup report this month, STI has staged a rally in Q4 in 7 of the past 10 years, with the exception of 1997, 2000 and 2002, when economy uncertainty was rife. Q4 has usually emerged as the best-performing quarter of the year, with an average return of 9% over the past 10 years. This could be linked to the year-end effect when investors put to use "on expectations of better prospects for the year ahead". But UOBAM estimates the returns to be between 4-5%.

Low oil, market also down .... ---------------------- ASIA MARKETS Oil shares, Japan machinery data lead region lower By Ilya Garger, MarketWatch Last Update: 5:46 AM ET Sep 11, 2006 HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Asian stocks fell Monday as energy shares, including Japan's Inpex Holdings and China's CNOOC, sank as crude prices weakened. Japanese markets fell sharply after a greater-than-expected drop in a key corporate-spending indicator raised fears the economic recovery may be faltering. The Nikkei 225 Average finished the day down 1.78% to 15,794.38, its lowest level in two weeks. The broader Topix index fell 1.45% to 1,596.50. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index dropped 1.15% to 16,948.59, also a two-week low. "At current levels there is a lack of direction, and some people prefer to take profit," said Peter Lai, sales director at DBS Vickers in Hong Kong. "Investors are also waiting for economic figures from the U.S." U.S. August consumer price data, due out later this week, is expected to shed some light on the economy's health and the direction of interest rates. South Korea's Kospi index lost 1.54%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.42%. Commodity shares were hit by falling crude and metal prices.
