Amid recession in global shipbuilding industry in the first half of 2013, Chinese shipbuilding industry made an achievement of a new order surge by more than 110%.
According to a report of the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), Chinese yards delivered a total of 20.60m dwt vessels in the first half of the year with a year-on-year decline of 36%, while inking new contracts for 22.90m dwt, which represents a 113.2% surge.
As of the end of June, Chinese shipbuilding industry was standing on 108.98m dwt amount of orderbook, down by 13.4%, but up by 1.9% from the end of 2012.
According to Clarkson survey, Chinese yards’ delivery, order intake and orderbook account for 39.1%, 44.2% and 43.1%, respectively, in the global market.
In the year to June, Chinese yards delivered 17.28m dwt ships for export, decreased by 34.4% from the same period a year ago, however orders for exporting ship increased by 163.3% to 21.04m dwt in total, according to CANSI.
As of the end of June, ships for export were seen to stand on 95.14m dwt amount of orderbook, down by 11.3% from a year ago.
Ships for export account for 83.9%, 91.9% and 87.3% of delivery, order intake and orderbook of Chinese shipbuilding industry, respectively.

Keppel had ran out of space. Cosco has China and coast line and Manpower is unlimited. Keppel Corp., the world’s largest oil-rig maker, will focus on building more offshore production and support vessels in Brazil as competition from China cuts prices for its main product. Brazil’s offshore development boom means Keppel’s yard is now mainly utilized for building rigs for state-owned Petroleo Brasileiro SA. The Singapore-based company is setting up a second yard to meet demand for other vessels and to offer repair and conversion work, Chief Executive Officer Choo Chiau Beng said in an interview on July 19. “We’re not interested to take a lot more work than the six semis from Petrobras because we do not want to overload our shipyard,” Choo said, referring to an order to build semi- submersible rigs for state-owned Petroleo Brasileiro SA. “We want to leave some capacity for our other customers” who need floating production, storage and offloading platforms, or FPSOs, and for oil-rig repairs, he said. | ||||

Ex-Cosco chief Capt Wei and his Greek connections By David Glass from Athens It is now official. The board of China Cosco Holdings (Cosco) has confirmed the retirement of Captain Wei Jiafu as its chairman is for "reasons of age". The directors retired Wei, 63, with effect from July 16, some three weeks after rumours the energetic captain was leaving China’s largest shipping group after some 15 year at its helm. However, just a few weeks earlier, it was all smiles when Wei flew out of Greece at the end of June, a visit which turned out to be his international swan song. He had helped make Greek Prime minister Antonis Samaras’ day 26 June, when he disclosed the Chinese giant is set to invest some Euro600m ($790m) in a bid to turn Piraeus into the Mediterranean’s leading container port. An MoA was signed 27 June. After days of political turmoil which culminated in Samaras undertaking a sweeping cabinet reshuffle, the PM and Greece received the boost when Cosco inaugurated its second container terminal in Piraeus – 18 months ahead of schedule -- immediately creating 500 new jobs. Up to 3,000 people will ultimately be employed by Cosco if Piraeus and the Chinese group achieve their goal of lifting the Greek port into Europe’s top five box handlers. Standing beside Samaras in the warm Greek sun and cutting the ribbon at terminal III, Greece knew Wei was a powerful ally. Comfortable in the knowledge the long-time chairman of Cosco always kept his pledges towards Greece, Wei was bade farewell as he boarded his plane for the flight home. While the statement revealing Wei’s replacement mentioned age as the reason for the resignation, and the Communist Party sets a pro forma 60-year-old cap for top executives at state-owned companies, many in Greece pointed out his replacement, Ma Zehua is now 60. In recent years Wei had become something of a champion for Greece, visiting the country a number of times and meeting with Samaras’ predecessors, George Papandreou and Costas Karamanlis both in Athens and in China to discuss business cooperation. He had a close relationship with several shipping people, especially the late Vassilis Constantakopoulos, founder of NYSE-listed Costamare Shipping. Wei and his wife were on hand in July 2006 when the Cosco Hellas, one of five 9,500 teu ships delivered in 2006 and chartered out for 12 years to Cosco Container Lines made its maiden call in Piraeus. Wei was an extremely strong supporter of Cosco's 35-year concession struck late 2009 to run container terminals II and III in Piraeus as the Greek port set about becoming the hub for trade between Europe, the Near Middle East and North Africa and China. Cosco has expressed interest in participating in the privatisation process of the Port of Piraeus, set to be completed by the end of the year. It says it will take part in the process, if the government choses to divest the Piraeus Port Authority’s majority 74% stake, currently traded in the Athens Stock Exchange. Privatisation programme president, Stelios Stavridis, has said this is the goal together with a 30-40 year concession of the port's main activities. Further, while in Greece, Wei had pledged he will encourage other Chinese companies to make investments in Greece. With Cosco evolving from a strategic investor in Piraeus into a strategic ally of Greece, Wei went on to say a Chinese fund has already expressed interest in the old airport south of Athens, referring to the possibility of creating a resort along the lines of an artificial island-hotel located in Dubai. He also expressed satisfaction with the support the Greek governments of the last decade have lent to the Chinese, highlightting his trust in the Greek authorities and entrepreneurs, and forecast “Greece will be the first country to emerge from the crisis”. Indeed, Wei’s enthusiasm for Greece was appreciated with great fondness, and there is a hope Wei Jiafu’s active career is not yet over, Greece’s door is always open. Singapore yards may benefit from China shipbuilding woes. Keppel Corp Ltd (NEUTRAL, TP SGD 11.21) and Sembcorp Marine Ltd (NEUTRAL, TP SGD 4.65), the world's top offshore rig-makers, stand to be among the winners from Beijing's moves to tighten credit amid a downturn at China's shipyards. The two companies have been under huge pressure from Chinese yards offering enticing payment terms, price discounts and help with financing. That may change as Beijing moves to cut credit to industries plagued with overcapacity. New ship orders for Chinese builders fell by about half last year amid a global shipping downturn. The credit crunch at Chinese shipyards will strengthen the negotiating powers of Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Marine with customers who use Chinese yards’ terms to negotiate for better prices. China leads the global orderbook for mobile drilling units, which include jackups, semi-submersibles, drillships, drilling barges and tender rigs, with a total of 56 units on order, followed by South Korea (55) and Singapore (42) as of early June, according to data from Clarkson Research Services. We currently have a NEUTRAL rating on both Keppel and Sembcorp Marine as their EPS outlook for the next two years is flat, which does not justify more than the mid-cycle valuations their stocks are currently priced at.   this news is not just comfirm ,X-Drill drill ship - if Cosco can get this contract then it is the biggest single OffShore order Cosco had win. due to x-drill is the small  loan from bank is very hard. |

Cosco do not take in small contracts, Yangzijiang take in small and big contracts as long as profit margin above 20 percent. Big contracts normally are smaller profit margin. But Cosco take in mostly Off Shore - Energy related orders which has higher profit margin. Now there are a lot of OffShore contracts. Waiting if Cosco can pen in a USD1.5billion US X-Drill drill ship - if Cosco can get this contract then it is the biggest single OffShore order Cosco had win.

一 直 以 来 , 船 台 、 船 坞 被 认 为 是 船 企 的 必 备 设 施 , 但 南 通 太 平 洋 海 洋 工 程 有 限 公 司 打 破 常 规 。 “传 统 船 舶 建 造 处 于 价 值 链 低 端 , 我 们 不 直 接 涉 及 船 壳 建 造 , 将 更 多 资 源 用 来 研 发 和 制 造 核 心 部 件 。 ”太 平 洋 海 工 首 席 运 营 官 颜 正 云 说 , 新 建 一 个 配 套 完 善 的 船 坞 需 4-5亿 元 , 前 期 投 入 和 后 期 折 旧 很 大 。 周 边 的 中 小 型 船 厂 正 好 闲 置 , 利 用 其 船 坞 , 既 能 节 省 投 资 , 还 能 盘 活 存 量 资 源 。 太 平 洋 海 工 已 收 购 当 地 一 家 船 厂 45%的 股 份 , 派 技 术 人 员 指 导 生 产 , 这 家 船 厂 起 死 回 生 。 近 期 他 们 还 将 租 借 当 地 另 一 家 船 厂 的 船 坞 生 产 钻 井 平 台 。 轻 装 上 阵 , 太 平 洋 海 工 销 售 收 入 从 2010年 的 1.4亿 元 增 至 去 年 的 13亿 元 。 相 关 机 构 预 计 , 此 轮 造 船 业 低 谷 期 , 预 计 70%-80%的 中 小 船 厂 破 产 倒 闭 。 记 者 调 查 发 现 , 少 部 分 中 小 船 厂 正 在 开 拓 渔 船 市 场 、 转 产 桥 梁 钢 结 构 等 非 船 领 域 , 实 现 保 本 经 营 , 个 别 还 能 有 微 利 。 国 务 院 正 在 制 定 造 船 行 业 过 剩 产 能 化 解 方 案 , 基 本 原 则 是 淘 汰 、 整 合 并 举 , 前 10家 船 企 产 能 占 比 增 至 70%以 上 , 5家 以 上 船 企 进 入 世 界 前 10强 。 我 省 提 出 , 力 争 到 2015年 全 省 打 造 5家 主 业 突 出 、 核 心 竞 争 力 强 、 带 动 作 用 大 的 船 舶 和 海 工 装 备 总 包 企 业 , 1-2家 进 入 世 界 前 10强 ; 优 化 南 通 (COSCO NATONG)、 泰 州 、 扬 州 产 业 布 局 , 力 争 3市 船 舶 产 业 集 聚 度 超 过 90%。 “只 要 大 海 不 干 , 就 需 要 航 运 , 就 有 造 船 人 机 会 。 江 苏 造 船 业 份 额 占 全 国 1/3、 全 球 1∕ 10, 这 样 一 个 高 端 、 朝 阳 产 业 没 理 由 不 好 好 发 展 。 ”在 上 月 召 开 的 苏 中 会 议 上 , 省 领 导 如 此 强 调 。 尽 管 全 行 业 信 贷 紧 缩 , 但 省 有 关 部 门 仍 在 协 调 金 融 机 构 对 船 舶 企 业 兼 并 重 组 、 海 外 并 购 及 骨 干 船 厂 转 型 给 予 支 持 |
