Rubber Gains to Record as Crude Oil Gains, Thai Supply Tightens By Jae Hur and Supunnabul Suwannakij Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Rubber climbed to a record after crude oil climbed to the highest level in more than two years, boosting the cost of making rival synthetic products, and heavy rains curbed supplies from Thailand, the largest shipper. The June-delivery contract, which listed on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange on Dec. 22, surged to as high as 419 yen per kilogram ($5,054 a metric ton) during the so-called night session. Trading in this session is settled on Monday. “Higher oil prices and tight supply from Thailand have pushed rubber prices higher,” said Hiroyuki Kikukawa, general manager of research at IDO Securities Co. in Tokyo. New York crude oil jumped 1.1 percent yesterday after the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment for December climbed to 74.5 from 71.6 in November. Americans increased spending in November for a fifth straight month and companies stepped up orders for equipment, signaling that the economic recovery is accelerating. Crude oil for February delivery rose $1.03 to close at $91.51 a barrel in New York, the highest settlement since Oct. 3, 2008. The market is closed today for the Christmas holiday. Rubber gained 4.5 percent this week, a fourth weekly climb, and is poised to rise in December for a sixth month. That would be the longest winning streak since 1979. Prices may stay at higher levels early next year as estates in Thailand, the world’s biggest producer, and Indonesia enter their low-production season, known as wintering, Kikukawa said. Record Cash Price The cash price in Thailand climbed 0.3 percent to a record 149.05 baht per kilogram, tracking higher oil prices, according to the Rubber Research Institute of Thailand. Supplies are inadequate to meet demand, it said today. Prices are likely to stay “high” as demand increases amid tight global supplies and rising oil prices, Apichart Jongskul, secretary-general of the Office of Agricultural Economics said today, without giving a forecast. Production of natural rubber in Thailand may increase 3.9 percent to 3.23 million tons next year as tapping areas increase, Apichart said at a Bangkok conference. May-delivery rubber in Shanghai climbed as much as 1.4 percent to 37,700 yuan ($5,673) a ton before closing at 37,300 yuan. The contract climbed to a record 38,920 yuan Nov. 11. State TV signal cut as UN backs Gbagdo Dec 24 2010 WalesOnline Ivory Coast state television disappeared from the airwaves outside the nation’s largest city, in a blow to the incumbent president’s attempts to cling to power in the bloody aftermath of an election most of the world says he lost. Meanwhile the United Nations recognised Laurent Gbagdo’s challenger, Alassane Ouattara, as the winner of the November 28 run-off vote. The 192-nation UN General Assembly rescinded the credentials of Ivory Coast’s UN ambassador Ilahiri Djedje, a Gbagbo supporter, and accepted those of Mr Ouattara’s choice, veteran diplomat Youssouf Bamba. The UN deputy human rights commissioner in Geneva, Kyung-wha Kang, said at least 173 people had died in violence since the election. She detailed hundreds of arrests and detentions, dozens of cases of torture and mistreatment, and said government forces were preventing investigators from looking into other reports of human-rights abuses, including possible mass graves. The state television channel controlled by Gbagbo continued to be shown in Abidjan, but only black and white snow appeared in at least six other cities around the West African nation just minutes before Ivorians sat down to their nightly newscast, residents said. It was not immediately clear how the signal was cut off. Advisers to Mr Ouattara refused to comment, but the event falls in line with a series of strategies he has been employing to try to break Gbagbo’s stranglehold on the news. A week ago, Mr Ouattara’s supporters unsuccessfully attempted to seize control of the channel. Mr Ouattara has been broadcasting a private radio station that intersperses rally songs with news broadcasts from the Golf Hotel, where he has been since the election. Mr Ouattara also had said that he planned to launch his own version of state TV. There was no immediate comment from representatives for Gbagbo. The UN, US, France and others have said Mr Ouattara won the run-off vote, but Gbagbo has refused to step down. State TV ran continuous footage of Gbagbo taking the oath of office in the days after he declared victory without mentioning that his claim was heavily contested. The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution last night calling for an end to the violence which has raised fears of a return to civil war. Ms Kyung-wha told diplomats that there may be more fatalities than the ones she was able to document. “Unfortunately it has been impossible to investigate all the allegations of serious human rights violations, including reports of mass graves, due to restrictions on movement by UN personnel,” she said. “Indeed, the special representative of the secretary general was stopped at gunpoint as he sought to verify such allegations.” UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said that forces loyal to Gbagbo, supported by masked men armed with rocket launchers, were blocking the road to a village outside Abidjan “where allegations point to the existence of a mass grave”. Ms Kyung-wha also expressed concern about how Ivory Coast media was being controlled by political allies of Gbagbo. She said state television and some private newspapers were inciting “hatred and violence” and releasing “false and inflammatory information against the United Nations”. Amid the rising concerns over violence, the US has said it and other countries are discussing ways to help quell the post-election violence. “We are in discussions with other regional countries to see if there are ways in which we can reinforce the UN peacekeeping force,” White House spokesman PJ Crowley said. “It could be that that kind of reinforcement could be another way to send a clear message to President Gbagbo.” Mr Crowley declined to name the countries that have been contacted but said Nigeria was a major contributor to West African peacekeeping forces. He also noted that France had interests in Ivory Coast, a former French colony where at least 13,000 French citizens live. There has been little international interest so far in a military intervention in Ivory Coast, which suffered a 2002-2003 civil war. The US and the European Union are imposing sanctions targeting Gbagbo, his wife and political allies. Hundreds of UN peacekeepers have been protecting the hotel where Mr Ouattara is based. Over the weekend, Gbagbo ordered all UN peacekeepers out of the country immediately. But the UN considers Mr Ouattara president and is staying put, raising fears that UN staff and other foreigners could be targeted as tensions mount Read More http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/latest-world-news/2010/12/24/state-tv-signal-cut-as-un-backs-gbagdo-91466-27881550/#ixzz1968fIXtc |

Ya, I prefer to exit if there is no confidence in the uptrend to protect my capital. If the positive news can't push it up, I'd rather stay aside first. If it can't support another day at 0.275 then there might still be further downside as the support is not confirmed. Wait till it is bottomed out before entering again. Of course, different people have different ways of trading, just find a way suitable for ourselves. The most important thing is to make money. Sometimes TA & FA really contradict each other. |

Natural rubber prices rise to all-time high Press Trust of India, December 23, 2010 (New Delhi) Natural rubber prices on Thursday touched a new record at Rs. 207 per kg in Kerala on concerns over the domestic supply coupled with rising global rates. "There is a tight supply situation which has fuelled the price rise and also a spurt in the international prices of natural rubber which are now ruling at Rs. 222 per kg," Rubber Dealers Federation of India President George Vally said. Natural rubber prices are on a gaining spree for the past few months due to continuous rain in central Kerala and in Malabar region which adversely affected tapping, according to the federation. Last month, rubber prices had zoomed to a high of Rs. 203 per kg but later it came down to Rs. 196 per kg. The rising global prices have also contributed in the increase in domestic rubber rates. Rubber prices have gone up in the international market due to increase in demand from China, coupled with disruption in production in Thailand, the largest producer, due to floods. According to the Rubber Board estimates, India is likely to produce 8.93 lakh tonnes of rubber in the current fiscal while consumption would be around 9.78 lakh tonnes. Recently, the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries, which accounts for 92 per cent of global output, has announced that the global natural rubber supply may drop by 3.8 per cent in the October-December period. Gbagbo denied Ivory Coast funds Source: BBC - BBC News The Central Bank of West African States has blocked Laurent Gbagbo's access to Ivory Coast's funds and has recognised Alassane Ouattara as president. The bank says only appointed members of Ivory Coast's "legitimate government" will have access to the deposits there. The BCEAO had been urged to restrict access as it will make it difficult for Mr Gbagbo to pay the military, and increase pressure on him to step down. Violence since last month's disputed election has left 173 people dead. A senior UN official said its investigators had also found evidence of extrajudicial executions, more than 90 cases of torture and 500 arrests, as well as abductions, kidnappings, acts of sexual violence, and destruction of property. The UN Human Rights Council expressed deep concern about the unrest, and unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the "atrocities". Mr Gbagbo says the 28 November poll, meant to unify a country split by civil war in 2002, was rigged in rebel areas that backed Mr Ouattara. The Independent Electoral Commission ruled that Mr Ouattara had won, a decision later certified by the UN. But the Constitutional Council said Mr Gbagbo had been elected, citing vote rigging in some areas. The UN General Assembly gave Mr Ouattara a further boost late on Thursday, by unanimously deciding to recognise his choice of diplomats as the sole official representatives of Ivory Coast to the UN. Emergency summit At the same time as the UN Human Rights Council met in Geneva, finance ministers in West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) agreed to tell the BCEAO to hand over control of Ivory Coast's state accounts to Mr Ouattara. "The Council of Ministers has noted the decisions of the UN, African Union and Ecowas [Economic Community of West African States] to recognise Alassane Ouattara as the legitimately elected president of Ivory Coast," a statement said, according to the Agence France-Presse news agency. The council had decided that only "officials regularly designated by the legitimate government of Ivory Coast" could access the country's deposits and represent it within the UEMOA, the statement added. The ministers instructed the central bank and all regional banks "to take all security measures to ensure the rigorous application of these measures". The BBC's John James in Abidjan says the decision cuts off a major source of funds for Mr Gbagbo, who has shown no sign of stepping down. Mr Gbagbo still has control of state television and the public support of the army, but without access to Ivory Coast's state accounts it is going to be extremely difficult to pay the salaries of soldiers and civil servants next month, even if he almost certainly has other financial reserves, our correspondent says. But, analysts say the move by the finance ministers is risky, because Ivory Coast is by far the most important economy in the West African CFA monetary zone, whose eight members all use the franc CFA. Although Mr Gbagbo has tried to paint the international condemnation of his decision to stay on in power as a plot by former colonial power France, West Africa's leaders have been some of the most vocal critics, our correspondent says. On Friday, they will gather in Nigeria for an emergency meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) and are likely to consider a range of measures against Mr Gbagbo, including the possibility of military action, he adds. It sent troops to bring peace to Liberia and Sierra Leone in the 1990s. 'Avoid violence' Mr Ouattara and his supporters are currently holed up in the Golf Hotel in Abidjan, protected by 800 peacekeepers from Unoci. They are in turn being blockaded by soldiers loyal to Mr Gbagbo. The incumbent president has demanded that UN and French troops leave the country immediately. A close ally even warned that they could be treated as rebels if they did not obey the instruction. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday that any attempt to "starve the United Nations mission into submission" would not be tolerated, told the international community that it "cannot stand by". Guillaume Soro, the former rebel commander appointed prime minister by Mr Ouattara, meanwhile urged the use of force to oust Mr Gbagbo. "The Ivorians cannot engage in talks with a dictator," he said. A US government specialist on Africa, William Fitzgerald, told the BBC that various options for defusing the crisis were being considered, but that "we're really trying to avoid violence if at all possible". |

ECOWAS Leaders Meet Over Ivory Coast Crisis Peter Clottey 23 December 2010 An official of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) told VOA several heads of state and government in the sub-region are in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, to participate in an emergency summit to find ways to resolve the political crisis in Ivory Coast. Sonny Ugoh, communications director for ECOWAS, said it will be premature for them to employ militarily force to remove Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo from power. “Later today, heads of state will be meeting to review the situation in Cote d’Ivoire since their last summit and see what additional things they need to do, (and) what additional measures they will need to agree on to realize the objective that they have enunciated in their last communiqué on their last extraordinary summit also on Cote d’Ivoire,” said Ugoh, to see how they can bring to fruition the takeover of (Alassane) Ouattara as the president, as reflected in the last document that they had here.” Supporters of former Prime Minister Ouattara have called on the international community to use force to remove Mr. Gbagbo from power saying targeted sanctions have not yielded the desired result. The international community, including ECOWAS, has recognized Mr. Ouattara as the winner of Ivory Coast’s 28th November presidential run-off vote and has demanded President Gbagbo step down and hand over power to his successor. But, Mr. Gbagbo, who is backed by the country’s military, has so far refused to step down, despite increasing international pressure to do so. He maintains he is the country’s true president saying he is willing to allow envoys from the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations to form a panel to study the post-election crisis. Ugoh said it is imperative for the sub-regional bloc to help resolve the Ivorian crisis. “It will be irresponsible of us to just pretend that because we have taken a decision at the last extraordinary summit that that is all we can do. I think we will engage with the issue of Cote d’Ivoire until (the issues are) resolved and there is a peaceful transition to President Ouattara.” Meanwhile, the United States says it is talking with African nations about the possibility of boosting international peacekeepers in Ivory Coast. U.S. officials say any move to increase the 10,000-person U.N. peacekeeping force would not be aimed at deposing Mr. Gbagbo, but to deter him from using his own forces to stay in power. http://www.voanews.com/english/news/africa/ECOWAS-Leaders-Meet-Over-Ivory-Coast-Crisis--112407254.html |

Plse read clearly "This means it can be a bullish indication on the ground or at a market low, not as good as a bearish one" . Anyway, nothing is guaranteed, as I said, it may go either way. but at a correction mkt low, chances of reversal up is there.

BEYOND CANDLESTICKS ( Steve Nison ) Pg 48 : A gravestone doji looks like a wooden memorial used in buddhist funerals that is placed at a gravestone .It is said that those who buy at a high price level after this doji will die and become ghosts .( Those familiar with candle patterns will note how this doji was part of a classic evening doji star pattern .)
