ST Forum Apr 9, 2010SPLITTING BUS ROUTES
Why it won't help
I HAVE followed with interest ideas on reorganising bus routes ('Government to review long bus routes'; March 29). There was a suggestion to split longer routes in two, but I fail to see how it can improve services or encourage more people to take buses. It would further stress the already bursting MRT system as people on long routes will take the train instead. At present, most buses which ply long routes are also de facto feeder services in the areas they serve. This is because most buses on long routes alternate between major and minor roads, and follow a winding route. This means a longer transit time. Splitting bus routes will only increase transit time and worsen the problem. A better solution may be to make a clear distinction between feeder services and buses on long routes. This way, buses on long routes will go on only major roads and not wind around HDB townships. Hence fewer buses will be required on longer routes. These extra buses can then be diverted to act as feeder services, which will be strengthened to take passengers from inside housing estates to MRT stations and major roads. This solution may be more complicated than simply splitting long routes, but I feel it is worth a look by the authorities. [NOTE: use mOre BRAIN POWER and TALENT MATTER] Kunwar Bir Singh

It will take years before these colourful lines become operational. Can wait till next major market clash before loading up Anyway, I think there is tender for companies (SMRT or Comfort) to bid for the lines right? Don't think everything will automatically goes to SMRT |

whao, very bright and colourful future for this company, it's all shown in the map, multi routes even for such a small country, colorful line. too bad, only invested 10 lots at $1.67. How nice, if I knew how to choose company like this and invested lots of money in it. Too bad, the profit is to dump in the loss in China shares. Sigh!! Am wiser now when buying shares, also with the help of useful infos from fellow forumers here. Got to learn from you KiLrOy---invested heavily.

As much as people are starting speculating on this stock, I would like to join in the speculation as well since I myself have invested quite heavily on this company. So here is my MRT/LRT stations speculative map. Good for property hunting use as well :p Just wanna bump this stock as high as it before i dump it. |

0410 GMT [Dow Jones] SMRT (S53.SG) +2.4% at S$2.14, clearing S$2.10 for first time ever, as investors continue to accumulate stock in anticipation of stronger ridership, advertising revenue as phase 2 of rail operator's Circle Line in Singapore opens from April 17. Move will add 11 more stations to existing five in Circle Line, boosting potential daily ridership to 200,000 commuters from over 30,000 currently. "We see ample room for advertising opportunities in these stations, considering the human flow and available space," says OCBC Investment Research, which has Buy call with S$2.22 target. Based on Circle Line's total lettable space of about 3,500 sq m, BNP Paribas, which has Buy call with S$2.31 target, says SMRT's rental income could gain another 10% when entire line fully operational by next year. Orderbook quotes suggest shares may test S$2.15-S$2.16. (frankie.ho@dowjones.com) |

When the bus stopped at a bus stop, an old indian lady in saree tried to alight onto the bus stop raised platform, about a foot front the the bus step, she slipped and fell in between the step and the platform. 1 malay lady and a chinese lady pulled her up, and the passengers shouted to the bus driver not to move off as the indian was the last passenger to alight at that bus stop. If the driver had moved, the wheels would have gone over her. She was shaken and the chinese lady looked after her at the bus stop. Her bottle(s) were not smashes although we could hear the sound of the bottle hitting against the road.

My advice to old folks (retired ones) 'try' to go out during non-peak hours and it also costs lesser on fares. :)

Took MRT from the West to City Hall at 1.30pm, stood all the way, at about 1 arm-length apart. Saw a few young adults (look educated) gave their seats to old folks, got future for spore Came back at 5 pm, sardine packed and stood all the way, and with pples' bad breath filling up the cabin. Cannot see anyone give up their seats to old folks ! A few were oblivious to the old folks standing next to them. Transfer to a bus, was also packed like sardine, but not so smelly. |

This is a basic need if you need to travel. otherwise walking is the next option. whether you like it or not it is here to stay maybe with some improvements along the way. There will be profits inline with the economy, come June 2010 we will see the PTC would announce fares increase. Not for traders. Vested | ||||

In a monopoly situation (Monopoly cos the route sectors are carved out for SBS and SMRT - and neither can infringe on the other's territory), customer comfort and satisfaction is low in the priority. Profit is the primary and possibly the only objective. Despite the reasons given, it is merely a feeble attempt to pacify the public wrath.
