Perhaps the following quote from the Business Times website can provide the answer. "Apply a weight based on their respective free float percentage, to the constituents". |

My thought is when Singapore become a Gobal City, more foreigners/ Foreign Companies would brought hse or office space. Which is why postive sentiment from various local property developers. Which is why, various property counters took turn to rally up, like WingTai,Ho Bee, SC Gobal so STI Property counters worth to take a look. * Allgreen Properties Limited (0.45) * CapitaLand Limited (0.35) * City Developments Limited (0.50) * Hongkong Land Holdings Limited (0.55) * Keppel Land (0.45) * United Overseas Land Limited (0.60) * Wing Tai (0.50) Just my thought only. |

iPunter : Thank you very much I notice that Singapore Press Holdings Limited (1.00) Total Access Communications (0.15) : Does this mean that if SPL moves, the impact on STI is greater than similar movement of TAC ? Of what significance is this weightage thing ? Or would you say : don't read too much into this weightage thingy ? |

If tonight's Dow spikes down below yesterday's low... it could be proof that the moon does have it's subtle effect on human action (selling/feeling in bearish mood). |

I noticed from an article in Business Times, under the Broker Take Corner. The comment given by GOLDMAN SACHS on 28 Mar 2007, on Asean profile strategy. Singapore is their top choice. Another news from CNA on 02 Apr 2007, that Saudi Billionaire prince wanted to invest in Asia and Singapore is one of the stop for his tour of Asia countries. I think our govt would not want to miss this chance of wooing him. With the two IRs and possibly F1 race and MM's recent speech that Singapore is going to be in the top half of developed countires. Its worth investing in good solid blue chips, but along the way there will still be risk of Gobal Economy downturn that will affect the STI. So invest within our means and I believe, we can all achieve what ever goals we hope for. |

Index formula The index is calculated by the formula: I_t = \frac { \,^{P_n} P_t Q_t W_t} {D_t} Where * It = Index * PN = Summation over N stocks * Pt = Price * Qt = Number of shares issued * Wt = Weight (dependent on free float, usually equals 1) * Dt = Divisor The weightage in the individual stocks show their relative influence in the index (of that particular grouping). |

The Straits Times Index (STI) is a market value-weighted stock market index based on the stocks of 50 representative companies listed on the Singapore Exchange.
Launched in the wake of a major sectoral re-classification of listed companies by the Singapore Exchange, which saw the removal of the "industrials" category, the STI replaced the Straits Times Industrials Index (STII), and began trading 1 September 1998 at 885.26 points, in continuation of where the STII left off. Then, it represented 78% of the average daily traded value over a 12-month period and 61.2% of total market capitalisation on the exchange.
Constructed by the Singapore Press Holdings, the Singapore Exchange and Professor Tse Yiu Kuen from the Singapore Management University, it comes under formal review at least once annually, and may also be reviewed on an ad-hoc basis when necessary. One such review, for instance, raised the number of stocks from 45 to 50, which took effect when trading resumed on 18 March 2005. This change reduced the index representation of the average daily traded value to 60%, while increasing its total market capitalisation to 75%.
New additions to be included after 5 Feb 2007 include Thai Beverage, Suntec REIT, Olam, Genting International, Labroy Marine and CapitaCommercial Trust. BIL, Dairy Farm, Haw Par Corporation and TPV Technology will be removed from the list. With these changes, the 50 stocks at STI will capture 51 percent of the average daily value traded on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) and 64% of the market value of stocks listed on SGX.
