8K for young officers in their 20s are still "obsenely" well paid. If that's the benchmark, then our Ministers certainly deserve to get higher pays. |

Lausk22, I think Giantlow pulling our leg.... take home, Elf more likely 8K and Giantlow sama sama I think... but I dont think the actual civil servants are going to get much pay increase.. (I can make a $1 dollar bet with you) btw, Giantlow, I share Geojam's wishes for you to recover your loss by year end... I am really glad to see SMB United (which I note you are vested) now going up in a breakout... |

My bet is one of the selling points by the civil giants to justify their pay increases is that the civil dwarves will be getting a higher % pay rise than them. |

someone cut off the beanstalk when the giant on it man. but the giant is getting up on his feet again. i reckon that lowly ranked civil servant like myself will most likely get a pay revision of about $80 - $100 more. (optimistic estimates) even then, maybe my pay is only about 25% of elf's pay |

i disagree with people who thinks that civil service is an iron rice bowl and with high pay and relax work. if civil service is so good, then join the civil service lah. why are so many civil servants making the move to the private sector then? civil servants pay are always lagging behind what the private sector. but it should also work both ways, civil service should be quick to cut pay when the economy is bad. dun hesitate to declare the variable mid year pay as zero if necessary |

Those who knows (with Phd) teach. Those who do not know become towkays or entreprenuers. |

Hey chinkiasu and lewsh88, I had the same dreams once of getting a PhD and leading a good and easy life. But I realise that in Singapore, any degree (except maybe MBA) after the bachelors degree isn't exactly valued by employers. They value working experience more. So I gave up that dream.... BTW, there's this joke... hope I offend no one .... MBA - Mentally Below Average... hahaha.. |

Many thanks, Sporeguy, I wasnt expecting a pat.. but much appreciated... I was just wanting to contribute.. you see, I was once a budding scientist with hopes to get a Phd, and do reseach.. however in my time no such thing as A*STAR /TLB fellowship, or scholarship.. we had to follow our departmental researchers (very few and limited budget) and hopefully get a tutorship which pays only $900 when the undergraduate student term is on, no other support or help etc.. and if you are from a poor family, and not much exposure to the international scene, nor good father's friends like you, you then have to give up such dreams when a better paying job comes along..... |

According to info, outgoing A*Star chief's idea is to have a 30% continual annual turnover of scientists and researchers with PHD (acronym for Pemenant Head Damage). This way, all industries in Singapore will have smart people in them. It is actually a good idea. But in actual situation, only about 10% leave. Many are offered positions in industries after their attachment but chose not to go. They feel safe in A*Star. Doing research has no deadline and one can work on something for life and if no result, so be it. Anyway, most discoveries are accidental (heng-ah!). The famous one known to everybody is viagra. Hey, people join the government service for its "iron bowl" job security. Has any government employee ever been retrenched so far? In industry, it is different. They expect you to contribute to the bottom line immediately upon taking up your position. It seems that the bone of contention between PY & LWL is the budget. A*Star gets the lion's share. |
