Latest news blog. http://blogs.aljazeera.net/live/africa/libya-live-blog-march-19  4:32pm Al Jazeera is hearing from French journalists that French fighter jets will begin their strike operations by targetting pro-Gaddafi tanks around Benghazi in order to send a message that they are breaking the siege.
4:22pm AFP reports that French planes are Rafale fighter jets, flying reconnaissance missions across " all Libyan territory" , citing a military source.
3:12pm Six F-16 fighter jets have landed at US naval air station in Sigonella, Sicily, a  Danish airforce spokesman
Meanwhile.....
12:18am Here is revised text of the speeches that Gaddafi's spokesman read out:
The first letter to brother leader to Barack Obama: " To our son, his excellency, Mr Baracka Hussein Obama. I have said to you before, that even if Libya and the U.S. of America enter into a war, god forbid, you will always remain a son. Your picture will not be changed. I want you to remain in the same image. I have all the people of Libya with me, and I'm prepared to die and we have all the men, children and women with me. Nothing more. Al Qaeda is an armed organisation, passing through Algeria, Mauritania and Mali. What would you do if  U found them controlling American cities with the power of weapons? What would  U do, so I can follow your example." Letter to Ban Ki Moon, Sarkozy and Cameron: " Libya is not yours, Libya is for the Libyans. The security council and  their resolution is void because it is not according to the charter to interfere with the internal affairs of the country. You have no right. You will regret if u get involved in this, our country. We can never shoot a single bullet on our people, it is Al Qaeda organisation." |

Latest news on Libya airforce plane  strike on.... http://sg.news.yahoo.com/air-strikes-south-west-benghazi-afp-20110318-225312-908.html Air strikes southwest of Libya's Benghazi : AFP. 26 minutes ago Planes carried out two air strikes southwest of Libya's rebel stronghold of Benghazi early Saturday and columns of smoke were seen rising from the targeted zone, AFP journalists reported. Aircraft could be heard over the centre of the city, where explosions were heard throughout the night, as well as continuous gunfire and anti-aircraft fire. The first air stike came at 7:20 GMT (0520 GMT) and the second followed around 20 minutes later, producing a thick column of black smoke that continued to sit in the sky nearly half an hour later. At 8:17 am local time, a series of several small explosions, possibly from Katyusha rockets, produced at least seven smaller columns of black smoke south of the city. The air strikes came after the Libyan government said it was observing a ceasefire that it announced shortly after the United Nations voted to authorise use of force against Moamer Kadhafi's troops. " Fighter jets bombed the road to the airport and there's been an air strike on the Abu Hadi district on the outskirts," Mohammed Dwo, a hospital worker and a rebel supporter, told Reuters. He was speaking at the scene of an apparent firefight between rebels and what they claimed were two mercenaries who had infiltrated the city and were driving in a car which they said contained a crate of handgrenades. The two men, in civilian clothes, had been shot and killed and rebels produced blood-soaked identity papers they said showed them to be of Nigerian nationality. Meanwhile--nothing is coming,  only word speak louder than action  " within hours" since 2 days had pass. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/air-strikes-within-hours-un-libya-vote-20110318-022332-751.html France said Friday military action against Libya would come " within hours" , as a UN vote approving air strikes was celebrated by rebels and Kadhafi's and son said his family was " not afraid." anymore...??? The strikes will come " rapidly... within a few hours," French government spokesman Francois Baroin said after the UN Security Council on Thursday cleared the way for air raids to protect civilians from Kadhafi's advancing forces. Baroin said the goal of the military action would be to " protect the Libyan people and to allow them to go all the way in their drive for freedom, which means bringing down the Kadhafi regime." So far Britain, France, the United States, Norway and Qatar are among the countries that have said they will help to enforce the no-fly zone, while China, Germany, Poland, Australia and Russia have indicated they will not. |

12:53pm--Resident of Misurata tells us that the city is still under heavy attacks from Gaddafi brigades, attacking from both the east and the west of the city. The forces have made some success advancing from the eastern side of the city, and the fire is indiscriminate ... hitting homes, mosques, and medical centres. Medical teams are unable to reach fighting areas and rescue those in need of medical help.

Libya rebels battle to hold eastern city under heavy siege from Moammar Gadhafi's forceshttp://ca.news.yahoo.com/libyan-forces-bombard-rebels-east-west-gadhafi-moves-20110316-021240-472.html Charred vehicles, bullet-riddled pickup trucks and an overturned tank littered the desert highway where pro-Gadhafi forces had fought up to the entrance of the key eastern city of Ajdabiya. if Gadhafi troops take it, Benghazi would likely be their next target. A powerful regime force advancing from the west has been relentlessly bombarding Ajdabiya the past two days, raining rockets and artillery and tank shells on the city, sending most of its population fleeing. Already under siege using mercenaries in more than 400 vehicles that are already en route, and one against mountain villages in the west where tanks, heavy artillery and other weapons are being gathered for an assault. Evidence of fierce battles. Government troops were bringing in a stream of truckloads of ammunition, rockets and supplies — signs of an intensified effort by the Libyan leader to retake control of the country he has ruled with an iron fist for more than four decades. Hundreds of pro-Gadhafi troops were lined up with dozens of tanks and other heavy equipment at the arches over the highway marking Ajdabiya's western gates. The AP and other journalists brought to the scene by government escorts saw regime forces bringing in large truckloads of ammunition and equipment — a sign that that the troops were gearing up to try to sweep through Ajdabiya and likely beyond. Meanwhile.... Opposition officials said rebel warplanes struck at pro-Gadhafi forces near the western gate — the first time the rebels have struck from the air at troops on the ground. A gas station attendant on the highway said he saw a rebel helicopter firing rockets and machine-guns. A colonel in the pro-Gadhafi force, Moftah Sabia, said the rebels did have some aircraft that they had used against the troops. The rebels claimed a small victory, hijacking a Libyan tanker ship that was transporting fuel from Greece to Gadhafi's regime. Opposition spokesman Mustafa Gheriani said fighters seized the ship on Tuesday off the Mediterranean coast and that it was carrying about 25,000 tons of fuel for Gadhafi. The tanker, Anwaar Afriqya, was seen Wednesday docked in the port at Tobruk, a rebel-held city in the far eastern side of Libya. Latest news..... The US, in a reversal, was pushing for broader action to protect civilians. According to a council diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity, council discussions were private, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said during more than eight hours of closed-door negotiations by council ambassadors.

* Japan radioactivity could enter food chain, children at risk * Radioactive materials spewed into the air by Japan's earthquake-crippled nuclear plant may contaminate food and water resources. RADIATION: A hospital doctor conducts a radiation test for those people who may be irradiated in Yamagata prefecture, Japan. (Photo: ZUMA Press)
SINGAPORE - Radioactive materials spewed into the air by Japan's earthquake-crippled nuclear plant may contaminate food and water resources, with children and unborn babies most at risk of possibly developing cancer.
Experts said any exposure to radioactive materials has the potential to cause various kinds of cancers, with higher levels of radiation seen as more dangerous.
" The explosions could expose the population to longer-term radiation, which can raise the risk of cancer. These are thyroid cancer, bone cancer and leukemia. Children and fetuses are especially vulnerable," said Lam Ching-wan, chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong.

" For some individuals even a small amount of radiation can raise the risk of cancer. The higher the radiation, the higher the risk of cancer," said Lam, who is also a member on the American Board of Toxicologists.
Radioactive material is carried by minute moisture droplets in the air. It can then be directly inhaled into the lungs, get washed down by rain into the sea and onto soil, and eventually contaminate crops, marine life and drinking water.

Cow milk was also especially vulnerable, experts said, if cows graze on grass exposed to radiation.
Lee Tin-lap, toxicologist and associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's School of Medical Sciences, said waters around Japan must be measured for radioactivity.

" No one is measuring the levels of radiation in the sea," Lee told Reuters.

" Steam that is released into the air will eventually get back into the water and sea life will be affected ... once there is rain, drinking water will also be contaminated."
Children at risk
Radiation is dangerous because it can cause changes or mutations in DNA, which may then go on to cause cancer. While the human body can repair DNA changes or damage, a person is only safe if the repair process happens faster than the time it takes for the damaged or mutated DNA material to replicate.

Most experts agree that growing children and fetuses are most at risk because their cells divide at a faster rate than adults.

They also consume more cow milk than adults, putting them at further risk, said a Japanese scientist who treated victims of the atom bomb explosion in Hiroshima.

" Cows are like vacuum cleaners, picking up radioactive iodine that lands over a wide area of pasture, and then those particles very easily are concentrated and pass into the milk," said the expert, who declined to be identified.

" This was what happened in Chernobyl, and unfortunately, information about the risk had not been supplied to parents."

G-8 in ugent meeting over Japan and Libya crises....? Officials placed Dai-ichi Unit 1, and four other reactors, under states of emergency Friday because operators had lost the ability to cool the reactors using usual procedures. Local evacuations were ordered. Officials began venting radioactive steam at Unit 1 to relieve pressure inside the reactor vessel, which houses the overheated uranium fuel. Concerns escalated dramatically Saturday when that unit's containment building exploded. It turned out that officials were aware that the steam contained hydrogen, acknowledged Shinji Kinjo, spokesman for the govt Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. More importantly, they also were aware they were risking an explosion by deciding to vent the steam. The significance of the hydrogen began to come clear late Saturday: Officials decided to reduce rising pressure inside the reactor vessel, so they vented some of the steam buildup. They needed to do that to prevent the entire structure from exploding, and thus starting down the road to a meltdown. At the same time, in order to keep the reactor fuel cool, and also prevent a meltdown, operators needed to keep circulating more and more cool water on the fuel rods. Temperature in the reactor vessel apparently kept rising, heating the zirconium cladding that makes up the fuel rod casings. Once the zirconium reached 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit (1,200 Celsius), it reacted with the water, becoming zirconium oxide and hydrogen. When the hydrogen-filled steam was vented from the reactor vessel, the hydrogen reacted with oxygen, either in the air or water outside the vessel, and exploded. A similar " hydrogen bubble" had concerned officials at the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in Pennsylvania until it dissipated. If the temperature inside the Fukushima reactor vessel continued to rise even more — to roughly 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 Celsius) — then when the uranium fuel pellets would start to melt. According to experts interviewed by The Associated Press, any melted fuel would eat through the bottom of the reactor vessel. Next, it would eat through the floor of the already-damaged containment building. At that point, the uranium and dangerous byproducts would start escaping into the environment. At some point in the process, the walls of the reactor vessel — 6 inches (15 centimeters) of stainless steel — would melt into a lava-like pile, slump into any remaining water on the floor, and potentially cause an explosion much bigger than the one caused by the hydrogen. Such an explosion would enhance the spread of radioactive contaminants. If the reactor core became exposed to the external environment, officials would likely began pouring cement and sand over the entire facility, as was done at the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident in the Ukraine, Peter Bradford, a former commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said in a briefing for reporters. At that point, Bradford added, " many first responders would die if it is expose." http://sg.news.yahoo.com/japan-plant-frantic-efforts-avoid-meltdown-20110312-144803-031.html In Japan plant, frantic efforts to avoid meltdownInside the troubled nuclear power plant, officials knew the risks were high when they decided to vent radioactive steam from a severely overheated reactor vessel. They knew a hydrogen explosion could occur, and it did. The decision still trumped the worst-case alternative — total nuclear meltdown. (teeth53 thot--A lesson, especially for our govt to learn, are we going to built a nuclear plant here...?) The chain of events started Fri when a magnitude-8.9 earthquake and tsunami severed electricity to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex 170 miles (270 kilometers) northeast of here, crippling its cooling system. Then, backup power did not kick in properly at one of its units. From there, conditions steadily worsened, although govt and nuclear officials initially said things, improving..?. Hours after the explosion, they contended that radiation leaks were reduced and that circumstances had gotten better at the 460-megawatt Unit 1. But crisis after crisis continued to develop or to  be revealed. Without power, and without plant pipes and pumps that were destroyed in the explosion of the most-troubled reactor's containment building, authorities resorted to drawing seawater in an attempt to cool off the overheated uranium fuel rods. Latest news on Japan (Reuters) - Radiation leaked from a damaged Japanese nuclear reactor north of Tokyo on Saturday, the govt said, after an explosion blew the roof off the facility in the wake of a massive earthquake. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, an evacuation radius of 10 km (6 miles) from the stricken 40-year-old Daiichi 1 reactor plant in Fukushima prefecture was adequate, but an hour later the boundary was extended to 20 km (13 miles). TV footage showed vapour rising from the plant, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo. The developments raised fears of a meltdown at the core  (plant) as officials scrambled to contain what could be the worst nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl explosion in 1986 that shocked the world.   |

When reactors shut down, cooling systems must kick in to bring down the very high temperatures. This is key to prevent a " nuclear meltdown" and radioactive release. Japan's network of advanced nuclear power plants are designed to shut down as soon as the earth shakes, than again.  When Friday's quake hit, the plants immediately shut down, along with others in quake-hit parts of Japan, as they are designed to do - but cooling systems at some reactors failed, the government said. One can never tell, if we hav one that fail here. S'pore Int'l business  can shut down n all  can go for holiday liao.

The good news. No nuclear reactor explosion. a nuclear explosion will cause a big mushroom A  light water reactor is unlike a Russian type " No Chernobyl is possible at, Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said. " Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3 km radius." |
