victorian, just wanted to share a thought about replacing the senior civil servant with younger one. Cruel might seem, sometimes it is necessary. Otherwise there could be no leadership renewal. Besides, those younger generation might be very demoralised as they is no chance for them as long as the old guy is there. Examples abound in foreign military... the old general sits on their senior position like Chief of Staff. No one could replace him until he is physically unable to cope. Many bright but young military man got passed over exactly because of this. Then a look at our SAF. The various service chiefs change every 3-5 years and in the process, they produced a few widely accepted leaders like George Yeo, Teo Chee Hean and up and coming Liu Tuck Yew. I want to highlight that I am not totally FOR this renewal process although I think there is a bright side to it. |

Sigh.... I am getting a little worried.... I for one definitely do not want to work till the day I die.... what's the point of living in Singapore then? I would rather quickly migrate to another country like Australia or NZ and live a better and more easy going lifestyle. I don't need to be super rich ... I just want to enjoy my life. |

Whether to retire at 37 or 73 really depends on what one has planned and achieved. We have read many postings by SJ members that they intend to retire between 35 and 52. The government's present hooha is about asking working people not to retire at all. This I feel depends on the job that one is doing. If I am Minister Lim Boon Heng or SM, or MM, I would not want to retire. I will get good continuous income and power. If I were the apek collecting empty plates at hawker centres or a taxi driver, frankly, I would not want to work after 55 if I can get by with 3 simple meals daily and a roof over my head, |

Anyway, 1 way to unleash the asset is to downgrade to a smaller house and live on whatever balance till your last breath. |

Victorian, The PAP government's aim is to get every abled person to continue working until they are no longer wanted by the employers. Just listen to the continuous talk from Lim Boon Heng, Lim Swee Say, etc. They will always emphasize on post retirement employment. Anyway, from the looks of it, if LKY is still "working" at 84 years old, so why not the others? Huh?. |

Simple. Once they lose their high paying job they cry father cry mother to govt saying why govt cannot help protect their rice bowl. Then they threaten next election I vote the hammer already hahahhaha... so typical sporean mentality. They think govt should provide everything for them. Last time news report minister saying a $200 was given to a young retrenched guy as some financial aid and that guy say that pitiful $200 is not enuff to pump petrol for his car one month. Imagine retrenched still feeding a car!!! :) |

Very true... many of my friends are high income people. The problem is they are also high spenders... splurging on big cars and condos. The result is that they are mostly living from hand to mouth. Almost their entire salary goes to their car and condo. Imagine what happens if they lose their jobs? |
