Natural rubber futures in Tokyo declined after the International Monetary Fund said there is no end in sight to the U.S. housing slump, heightening concern that demand for the commodity used in car tyres may decrease. Futures dropped as much as 0.6% after the IMF warned in a report yesterday that deteriorating credit conditions for consumers and banks may prolong a period of slow economic growth. "The rubber market was weighed down by speculation that slowing economies may curb demand for cars and tyres," Jun Nishimuta, an analyst at Kanetsu Asset Management Co. in Tokyo, said today. Rubber for January delivery, the most-active by volume, fell 0.1% from its closing price yesterday to settle at 331.6 yen a kg (US$3,080 a metric ton) on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange. Automakers have been hurt this year by a drop in demand for less fuel-efficient models amid record gasoline prices and a sluggish economy. Losses in futures were limited as a rise in crude oil raised the appeal of commodities as an inflation hedge, Nishimuta said. Natural rubber reached a 28-year high of 356.9 yen Jun 30 as record oil prices boosted production costs for the rival synthetic product. |

reply to Zhuge...but at least those who bought at 21cts are already money in the pocket, like myself I've 50lots.I've comfirmed with my broker that the offer is what Sinochem will be buying back at 26cts from minority shareholders ie for example if U hve 20000 share the offeror,Sinochem will buy back 10,500 from U at 26cts so everbody wins..better to wait as 25Aug draws nearer likley may cross 26cts say 28cts is possible. But if U hve confidence in the post takeover then >32cts is achievable.I'm confident prior to this that some takeover is in the air

I think accept the offer. GMG has been unable to trade up to $0.26. Unless you think that the offer will not go through. | ||

If there is an offer for 26c a piece, and now it is at 22.5c, is this a good time to buy? Is it a sure thing? If so why still only at 22.5c?? Puzzled.... Any one opinion? |

Thai rubber prices could drop 20% when supplies reach their peak in Augu, but strong overseas demand and costly oil will prevent a steeper decline, exporters and analysts said on Mon. Unsmoked sheet (USS3), the raw material for export-grade rubber sheet (RSS3), was expected to fall to 80 baht (US$2.40) per kg in Aug, down from 102 baht per kg quoted on Mon, due to increasing supply. "Prices are expected to fall, but not as low as 60-70 baht as we saw in the last few years," said Yium Tavarolit, an economist at the International Rubber Consortium Ltd, which comprises major rubber producers Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Rubber farmers began tapping again after rains stopped this month in southern Thailand, the main rubber growing area for the world's biggest exporter. "Supply will peak in Aug, but if we look into overall supply in '08, we will find there is not that much production," an exporter said. The Agriculture Ministry has forecast 3.1 million tonnes of rubber in '08, but traders and exporters expect 2.9 million tonnes due to a wet season that last longer than expected, disrupting tapping in May and Jun. Traders expected strong interest from China, the world's biggest rubber importer, when prices start falling. "They need to build up their falling stocks," a trader at Thailand's Hat Yai rubber centre said. Rubber inventories in warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange were at 22,395 tonnes last week, up 18% from the previous week, but still well below the 93,760 tonnes recorded in Jan. The high cost of oil would also help Thai rubber stay above 80 baht per kg for the rest of the year. Costly oil makes synthetic rubber, a petroleum product, more expensive and encourages the use of natural rubber. "If oil prices hover at these high levels, I believe the rubber price could stay at 80-90 baht per kg," said an official at the Agriculture Ministry's Rubber Institute, which monitors the rubber market. |
