shplayer, share your sentiment w.r.t. PY and SCI. That's why I think some people they are 'good' only as civil servant (here I stressed 'some')!!! They grew up in that environment, had no idea what the REAL world is like, let alone a public listed company. Actually if you didn't mention it, thet part of my memory has faded from by databank. And I share the same sentiment re: SIA. No no no, since I'm vested in this, although my share is not even the size of a drop in the ocean. For that matter, please do not put another untested c servant to head any of public listed GLCs. Yep, and they still demand to have salary equating top performers in the private sector : { |

sigh. you guys ah. before i become public enemy no: 1 *haha* 1) I agree with NS. Guys should serve it. they're too soft otherwise. don't know abt the generation lausk/shplayer etc came from, but for my generation and younger, it certainly applies. and shplayer, no, there was reason in what you said, not 'fire' as dunno who else commented. Agree with some of yr pts. And yea, i should have sep out country from govt. my mistake there. 2) Why i said NS is child's play: I was thinking of child soldiers in Afghanistan, Somalia, etcetc. They're picked from 7 and start training then. They train them by killing their parents in front of them, and picking friends for them to practice on. In the Khmer Rouge, the soldiers in Tuol Sleng were 14-15 years old, because they are the ones who can be trained to kill. In contrast, how many of our guys here have seen actual combat? war games perhaps should not count; since any deaths from there are accidents of human error, not hostile enemy fire. 3) chinkiasu. Remember that elf is first and foremost a rationalist. as with my calls on SJ, i never say anything without proof. So. desk job or not: no comments. Any further cursory assumptions by anyone is unwelcome. Henceforth, nothing else abt my job. Will not reply to any further barbs/questions/jokes/whatever on that area. Asterisk, thanks, tho, for willingness to see the other view. :) I never take something for nothing. So, wanna be my younger bro? I'll teach you all i know abt stocks. hehe. You're an idealist. imaginative, restless mind. Always jumping abt from idea to idea, so you tend to leave some things uncomplete. Probably like doing things with your hands, or always fiddling/doodling. like spontaneity, dislike routine. Able to see from multiple perspective, so sometimes appear distracted or forgetful. and haha, your room is probably in an absolute mess, isn't it? :P but when you think and focus, you are very methodical, and you sometimes surprise people with 'sudden brilliance', as they think it that way. Likely, everyone ard you thinks you're intelligent, but also think you're a bit of a slacker/underachiever. haha. 4) our guys here might do reservist etc, but chances are, you will never have to fight, ala the child soldiers from war torn countries. Our army serves as a deterrent force. Key word: deterrent. Why? logically: In event of an actual war, you think singapore even stands a chance with infantry? It's technology and strategy that will determine win or lose. That's why we have our missile bases overseas. Good to know tho that most of you guys are willing to fight. 'cos i asked JC kids before, just last year, how many of you would stay and fight for singapore in event of a war. 3 out of 4 said they would run. Class after class said the same thing. They asked, 'what for fight?" 5) NS was initially set up with the help of 11 Israeli officers, who came to singapore in guise of a foreign country to train our men. So that we don't offend out Muslim neighbours, Malaysia and Indonesia, who do not recognise Israel as a sovereign state. In that sense, all our officers are 'Jew trained'. (btw that phrase is a little sweeping. its like saying all muslims are malays.). 6) I know the past generations can wear NS as a badge of pride, and i fully agree wtih that. you guys did actual stuff. But for the younger generations, how many of you know: The guys' IPPT is done in airconditioned gyms. when they go for outdoor training, they have freaking mobile kitchens. Have you seen the living quarters on Tekong? I mean, c'mon, in an actual combat situation, are you gonna have such luxuries?! that's it with NS. nothing more before the guys all kill me. haha. But yea, times change, things change. NS before and now are different things. Two words for elf to rest her case: White horses. adrian pang, that commando line comes from the poem, The Charge of The Light Brigade: Ours not to reason why Ours but to do and die |

Asterisk, AI => Armour Infantry. Elfie mei mei, Just reread my post on your comments about NS. Sounded abit blunt....but please be assured its not my intention.....I was just trying to express my opinion about the issue. Unlike PY, I accept that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Speaking of PY, ....there was an article in the ST a couple of weeks ago....where he talked about his achievements..... ....did you guys notice he did not mention a word about his stint as Executive Chairman of SembCorp? That was a BIG screwed up (pardon the language) job he did there. When he took over, SCI was trading at about $10.00 (ballpark) with a cash horde ('war chest' as they called it) for growth and expansion of about $800m. By the time he relinquished his position, SCI was trading < $1.00 and about 2.0 bil in debt.....'Solitaire law suit also happened under his watch..... So critical was the situation that Temasek had to engineer a reverse takeover by the profitable STIC (Spore Tech Industrial Corp?)....then headed by Wong Kok Siew..... to save SCI from crumbling under its mountain of debt. In that interview, PY hinted he was still eyeing the Chairmanship of SIA....a post he has considered for before being assigned to EDB instead. Here, I recall, a few years later, when JYM Pillai (ex Chmn of SIA) retired, there were rumours that PY will succeed him, price of SIA fell quite drastically. Thankfully, Temasek appointed Dhanabalan....and SIA's price immediately shot up. For the sake of small investors like us, I hope Temasek, in their 'immense wisdom' will not make the grave error of granting PY his wish (of Chmnship of SIA)and allow him to destroy a very important icon of Singapore. |

Dear IPunter, here is a link to your question: http://photo.net/equipment/digital/basics/ Personally, I rely more on automatic settings... of the digital camera. and dont bother about ISOs afterall nowadays when you can have 4gb even 8 gb compact flash/ SD cards, why waste your brain doing conversions etc.. just shoot if dont like and, try again for the combinations you like... then go home and delete all the bad pics and save the good ones... but important to get a fast memory card go for 120X if you are using those low end cameras without buffer.. happy shooting... |

Chinkiasu... Since you are into photography, I hope you can help me understand "ISO " in a digital camera. How does one use the ISO setting, since a digital camera does not use film at all? Having been setting ISOs in film cameras for decades already, this setting in a digital camera really get me all groggy! How does it work in conenction with the CCD sensor? Hope to be enlightened... :) |

The only Chinese classics I love are: "The 8 Immortals Crossing The Sea" (Ba Hsien Guo Hai), "Journey to the West" (Xi You Ji) and also "Strange Tales" (Liao Zhai) The main reason my area of interest is so very limited is because I can't read a single damn word of Chinese, though I am Chinese and can speak it quite fluently. And I got my 'knowledge' of these stories through watching these movies. |

good morning folks! ...... I just heard news: from Bloomberg... the sky is gona fall! U.S. to Apply New Duties on Chinese Imports Following Ruling on Subsidies The U.S. Commerce Department, reversing more than two decades of practice, decided today to levy new duties on imports from China to compensate for Chinese subsidies to exporters. |

By the way, for bak-kut-teh, can try the Ng Ah Sio's stall in Rangoon Road. Heard they even refused to open for HongKong's Donald Tsang during his last visit. | ||

It would appear we have missed each other again Bunnie.. and it looks like all the others have gone out TGIF or by now asleep..
U re in KL? Did you go there to also grace the opening of the airconditioned public toilet in Bukit Bintang? Did you try it? I heard the DPM of Malaysia was the guest of honour for the opening...
Alamak you eating in Italian restaurant alone? a rose for the lady...: you didn?t go out to try some ?snakes & stuffs?? I guess eating yeh mei alone not so fun (but I actually did it alone, becoz nobody would want to join me leh) ..btw, I meant to ask you this.. as a former life sciences major.. do you think eating exotic food would input you some extra ?inner strength? as it goes in the wu xia stories..
I use to think that all food is digested, and broken down in gut by enzymes to amino acids, glucose etc for adsorption into the blood stream and then resynthesied in the liver etc etc.. i.e whatever special qualities of the meat of snake or insect etc would be gone by the time it goes into your liver? so we choose food for the make up of amino acids/carbohydrate/ fats...and this is all it matters. rite so far? |

huh ? Is this a trick question or a trap ? Ah, never mind let's amuse ourselves....... The heroes of Water Margin epitomise classic virtues of loyalty, strenght in character, justice, filial piety, exceptional skills etc. I cannot say I typify any one character , but maybe a mixture:
1) Song Jiang (timely rain) , 2) Wu Yong ( the adviser or is it the wizard or something) , 3) Wu Song ( the one who kills the tiger with bare hands, avenges short brother's death ) , 4) Lin Chong ( who killed the original incompetent water margin leader ) 5) and the innocent, loyal , naive, filial , clown, OX , ( who charges with 2 axes, Kui or something )
and
6) plenty of Me : )
chinkiasu : Now, its ur turn . Who do you typify ? hahaha !
( the drum roll , the theme song please !) |

iPunter my pal, Your question on whether our NSmen are weak is similar to the common question on whether our present younger generation is weak. Well let time be the judge. However, I shall leave you to mull over the following quote:

Dear shplayer, I felt assured to know that my troop and I have a comrade in arm like you! I don't think anyone of us wishes to lay down our life on the line. However, if that D-day has to come, then at least it is comforting to note that we share the same mission when we are fighting for our lives as well as those of our mothers, wives and daughters so that they will not end up as comfort women if we lost. |
