Last night was the day after a long holiday, Memorial Day weekend.

Now, the data to be released: consumer confidence, housing starts, housing prices, were mostly bad. Oil and gold are spiking. The US dollar is dropping.

Hence, the standard guess for the DJIA open?

It's a down.

BUT....what does the US Fed do?

A big dealer has 210 million sell options for the US/JPY pair at 104 (ie, 1 US dollar buys you 104 yen), expiring at 10 am EST. A sell option means that if the price at 10 am was below 104, the person holding the option makes a profit.

So at 9 am, the schilling report came out. Bad news on housing, as expected. The news at 10 am is also bad; which the big boys have prior knowledge of. ie, the DJIA should do a major down, and oil, gas, gold should spike. BUT, the US/JPY pair starts a slow climb up.

Then in 15 min flat between 950 am and 1005 am, they ramp the US/JPY pair up to 104.3.

Whoever that big dealer was lost big. And who bought the options from him won big.

How big? 210 million options x 30 pips. ie, 59 billion USD. Made in 15 min flat.

That's what's supporting the US economy/DJIA. The shadow dealings.

Hence the rise of the DJIA last night against bad news, and why oil retreated to <130 per barrel.

it's pure psychology. brilliant.

WASHINGTON: US consumer confidence fell to a 16-year low in May amid a stuttering economy and as surging oil prices pushed inflation expectations to an all-time high, The Conference Board reported on Tuesday.

The business research firm said its index of consumer confidence, which has slid all year, fell to 57.2 from 62.8 in April.

Most analysts expected a reading of 61.

The April reading of the consumer confidence index was revised slightly higher to 62.8, from an initial estimate of 62.3.

The index is seen as a gauge of future consumer spending, the driver of two-thirds of US economic activity. The last time the index was lower was in October 1992, when it stood at 54.6.

"Weakening business and job conditions coupled with growing pessimism about the short-term future have further depleted consumers' confidence in the overall state of the economy," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board consumer research centre.

"Consumers' inflation expectations, fuelled by increasing (gasoline) prices at the pump, are now at an all-time high and are likely to rise further in the months ahead," she said.

Both major components of the index dropped sharply in May. The present situation index, which measures how consumers feel about current conditions, fell to 74.4 from 81.9, a new low for the cycle.

The expectations index, which measures consumers' outlook for the next six months, fell to 45.7 from 50.0, also a low for the cycle.

The expectations index suggests "little likelihood of a turnaround in the immediate months ahead," Franco said.

In the monthly survey, consumers expected inflation to hit 7.7 percent in May 2009, up from a 12-month expectation of 6.8 percent in April.

Twenty-eight percent of those polled said jobs are "hard to get," almost unchanged from 27.9 percent in April, while those saying jobs are "plentiful" declined to 16.3 percent from 17.1 percent.

Consumers expecting business conditions to worsen over the next six months rose to 33.6 percent from 27.4 percent, while those anticipating business conditions to improve edged up to 10.4 percent from 10.1 percent in April.

In another sign of flagging confidence amid the economic slump, the Wells Fargo/Gallup index, a quarterly confidence measure of small-business leaders, plunged to 48 in April from 83 in January. It was the lowest reading since the index started in August 2003.

Battered by the worst housing slump in decades, tight credit and high oil prices, the world's biggest economy has stalled to a scant 0.6 percent growth pace in the past two quarters.

Stocks inch higher

Wall Street tries to rise after the long holiday weekend as investors eye weak new home prices, another spike in gas prices and falling crude oil.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks tiptoed higher Tuesday morning, as investors returned to work following a long holiday weekend. However, gains were limited after a report showed a steep drop in home prices in the first quarter.


The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU), the broader Standard & Poor's 500 (SPX) index and the Nasdaq composite (COMP) all inched higher in the early going.

Stocks tumbled Friday, at the end of a down week, on spiking oil prices and another weak housing market report ahead of the three-day holiday weekend, with all markets closed Monday for Memorial Day. Tuesday brought another weak housing report ahead of a more closely watched new home sales report, due shortly.

In the news:

Oil prices back off: U.S. light crude oil for July delivery fell 84 cents to $131.35 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, retreating further after hitting an electronic trading record of $135.09 a barrel last week.

Gas hits 20th record high: The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas rose to a record $3.937 from the previous day's record of $3.936, AAA reported.

Home prices plunge anew: The 20-city S&P/Case-Shiller national home price index slumped 14.1% in the first quarter, a record decline that topped expectations. (Full story). To top of page

U.S. stock market looks for relief from inflation

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Stocks could use a holiday during the coming Memorial Day-shortened week from the escalating energy prices and inflationary data that have dogged the equities market, fueling persistent worries about the ailing U.S. economy.
"Oil stands a good chance to rationalize its price; it should come down, and we will receive no readings on inflation in the economic-data calendar -- the two things that haunted the market last week," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist.
On Friday, stocks sealed weekly losses after a report showing the number of unsold U.S. homes piled up to a 23-year high in April. Read Economic Report.

For the week, the Dow industrials lost 3.9%, the S&P 500 3.5% and the Nasdaq 3.3%.
"We were sad about [the producer-price index] being higher than expected and oil was hitting a new high every day; then we had Fed minutes saying we're a little concerned about inflation,' added Hogan.
"We're in the early phase of a consumer recession rivaling the one we had in 1973 to 1975," commented David Rosenberg, Merrill Lynch's North American economist.
The analyst projects consumer-discretionary stocks are likely to give up more of their gains in the months ahead, with the economic stimulus checks being mailed to middle- and low-income Americans "likely to be absorbed at gas pumps and checkout counters."
But Rosenberg is less concerned than others about inflation, saying a slag in the labor market is offsetting the higher costs of commodities, which he contends accounts for only 10% of inflation. "Keep in mind there is more labor in a box of cornflakes than corn," he added.
Crude futures ended last week with a gain of almost 5% after a four-session winning streak, ending at $132.19 a barrel on Friday after briefly touching a record high of $135.09 in electronic trading Thursday. See Futures Movers.
Next week's economic docket will have the government reporting on durable-goods orders in April on Wednesday, with the number expected to slide 1.5%, along with a like drop in shipments.
The following day brings a preliminary reading on first-quarter GDP, with is likely to climb 1% from an early reading of 0.6%. Other economic data on Thursday include initial jobless claims for the week just ended, with analysts forecasting a climb of 5,000 to 370,000.
On Friday, the government is expected to report a 0.2% rise in personal income for April, while a separate report will offer a reading of manufacturing activity in the Chicago region.
On the earnings front, PC giant Dell Inc. reports its fiscal first-quarter earnings after Thursday's market close, with analysts looking for good, albeit not great results. See Earnings Outlook. End of Story

May I ask which platform do u use to see the live futures for DOW?

 

In my opinion,
with Dow closing on Monday.
We will have Shanghai and Hang Seng leading the recovery until DOW open on Tuesday night.

anyone guesses today wad +/- points it will hit today? Monday the US Markets will be closed for a holiday....
