Technically, price is still in the downward spiral. Fundamentally, the financial reports are not very good as well. However, Company and Directors have been Buying the company's share since beginning of this year. They may know something that we don't. This is a High Risk Counter to me. Unless it breaks out of the Downtrend Channel, I wouldn't consider Buying. If you want to take the risk and Buy based on insider Buys, than Buy a little and must have the preparation to lose the money, else don't take this risk. Wait for price to stabilized and then Buy. Grade: 5.

Raffles Education: Diversification and new focus to drive growth Summary: Raffles Education Corp (REC) is currently facing challenges due to declining student enrolment numbers in PRC. This is a result of structural headwinds facing the education system there, with a foreseeable continuation in the decline in students registering for the National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gao Kao). REC is thus seeking diversification into new markets to address the impact of falling enrolment numbers. One key market is India , with its youthful population and the Indian government’s push for private initiatives to improve its higher and technical education capabilities. REC is also strategising to move up the education value system via new universities in the region. While REC’s diversification into new markets could pay off in the future, we believe it would continue to face near-term pressure since PRC is still a key market. The aim to raise its profile from higher education provider to that of a university group is also still in the transitional phase. Hence it could take some time before significant contribution can be felt, in our opinion. We maintain our estimates and reiterate our HOLD rating and fair value estimate of S$0.285 (based on 18x FY11F EPS). (Wong Teck Ching Andy) /ocbc ir - i came i read i posted FYI only. |

It’ll take more than rules to rule the schoolhouse What the financial crisis can teach about managing the private education scene
After nearly two years of study, students were left in the lurch by the sudden closure of the School of Applied Studies last month. As one student told MediaCorp: “I’ve been here for two years and I didn’t get a cert. Now I’ve to start all over again in another college. It’s going to be hard.” It’s not only hard for the students. It’s hard on the education sector in Singapore. As part of Singapore’s Global Schoolhouse initiative, the Economic Development Board says it plans to “build up the Singapore education brand name” and “develop a vibrant community of tertiary, pre-tertiary and corporate training institutions” so that it can “attract even more students, faculty, researchers and professionals from all over the world”. Any time a school closes and students are left in the lurch, the brand name can take a hit. While new rules applied by the Council for Private Education protect students’ money, some school administrators say it’s less likely to protect the brand. Registration requirements are just a “form-filling exercise”, said one, and certification may appear to have more to do with completing forms right or high profits than academic quality. She expects more schools to close between now and June if they don’t get EduTrust certification and can’t take in foreign students. |

Share buyback makes alot of sense when the company's market shares are perceived to be unattractive and prices remained depressed. The sections of the pie gets reduced. From another POV, when a company is seen to be consistently buying back shares at times like these, one can also infer that this is a "comfortable" range in which the company feels confident that these price range reflects its intrinsic value, and if it also at the same time reduces volatility by controlling more of the market shares and hence the price range fluctuations, then why not? Sounds familiar? Like the US, it makes sense to buy more of your own debt (treasuries and bonds) when your own money is cheap (interest rate near 0!), and also to repay outside debt with cheap money, and at the same time, keep interest rates low to stir appetite of risk behaviour (to reverse falling revenue and rising debt). On the surface, it is always talk about the reason been "very confident" of the company's own future (or country). But deep inside, there is no other choice besides admitting to the fact that revenue situation has not been reversed and everyone, including the company itself, is left holding on to the hope that some positive near term news (which has nothing to do with actual long term revenue integrity) will resolve the current stagnant financial situation. All one can do is to continually prop up that hope that more risk behaviour will come back soon... |
