S'pore and Indon to sign 2 pacts in Bali today
PM Lee and Indon President Yudhoyono will witness the signing of the Extradition Treaty and Defence cooperation agreement. Concluded late on Monday night in Singapore, these pacts will be signed by the two countries' foreign and defence ministers after two years of negotiations. The two treaties were concluded as a package, in accordance with an agreement between Mr Lee and Dr Yudhoyono reached during an October 2005 meeting in Bali,. Indonesia has said that an extradition pact would be necessary in order to fight corruption and will allow it to arrest Indonesians allegedly involved in graft cases who fled the country. When Indonesia froze the use of a joint military training area in 2003, the Defence Cooperation Agreement was proposed to restore defence cooperation. Details of the two pacts will only be released later today, after the signing ceremony. When the leaders meet later today, it is likely that they would discuss two unresolved bilateral issues - the ban on the export of Indonesian sand to Singapore and the detention of 22 Singapore-bound barges carrying granite. The barges were detained by the Indonesian authorities in February due to its alleged violations of regulations related to the sand ban. The detentions disrupted Singapore's supply of granite, a basic construction material. It also came just weeks after Indonesia banned the export of land sand, another fundamental material. PM Lee had previously described the sand ban as a lost opportunity for economic cooperation and a move that was detrimental to both parties. |
