SIA, Silkair raise fuel surcharges by 10% They are raising the surcharges about 10 per cent after an 11 per cent rise in the price of fuel since May, when the surcharges were last raised. The new surcharges, which kick-in for tickets issued on or after Aug 2 are: US$22 (up from US$20) per sector for flights between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Bandar Seri Begawan, Bangkok, Denpasar, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Manila and Penang; US$98 (up from US$89) per sector, for flights between Singapore and gateways in the United States and Canada on a single-sector basis; and US$63 (up from US$58) per sector, on all other flights. This is the third straight rise in fuel surcharges, after two reductions late last year, when the fuel price showed signs of softening. Jet fuel now costs about US$90 a barrel, up from US$81 in May. Jet fuel is, on average, US$15 dearer than the underlying oil price. The new surcharges are subject to official approval in some markets, and local variations may apply where regulatory approvals dictate. SIA said adjustments will provide only partial relief of higher operating costs due to dearer fuel. The group spent close to $5 billion on fuel the last financial year, 16 per cent more than the previous year. THE soaring price of jet fuel has forced Singapore Airlines and Silkair to lift fuel surcharges again. |

CIMB-GKRaising fuel surcharges for the third timeHigher fuel surcharges from 2 AugustSIA yesterday announced higher fuel surcharges for the third time this year in order to mitigate rising jet fuel prices (Figure 1). The new rates will apply to tickets issued from 2 Aug 07. SIA first announced an increase in fuel surcharges on 22 Mar, for tickets issued on or after 1 Apr, and then again on 3 May, for tickets issued on or after 9 May. The new rates are as follows: ? Flights between Singapore and Asean destinations (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Brunei, Bangkok, Bali, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, and Manila) will be charged US$22 per sector (+10% from US$20 currently). ? Flights to the US and Canada will be charged US$98 (+10.1% from US$89 currently). ? Flights to all other destinations will incur a fuel surcharge of US$63 (+8.6% from US$58).
Valuation and recommendationMaintain OUTPERFORM, forecasts and target price of S$25.60, based on an unchanged forward P/E of 15x. Our cum-capital repayment target price incorporates capital distribution of S$1.23 and our ex-capital repayment target of S$24.40.
SIA offers investors strong earnings growth of 49% for FY08 and 20% for FY09, coming from healthy core earnings expansion and a 6.7% reduction in the number of shares once the share cancellation exercise is completed. Core earnings are expected to grow from the A380 deliveries, with the first three to arrive by Feb 08. Yields and profitability should also expand from B777-300ER deployments. Based on the demand and supply fundamentals of the oil market, we may have to revise up our house forecasts of WTI average crude prices, which currently stand at only US$60/barrel in CY07 and US$55/barrel in CY08. However, SIA?s successive fuel surcharge hikes suggest that the airline is in a very strong position to pass on higher-thanexpected jet fuel prices. As a result, we do not expect significant earnings risk from higher fuel costs. |

Received this from their newsletter: The world?s first commercial flight of the A380 will take place with Singapore Airlines in October 2007. To celebrate this historic event, Singapore Airlines will auction seats on this history-making flight and all proceeds from the auction will be donated to charity. You are invited to be a part of history and bid for seats on this flight, between Singapore and Sydney. The proceeds from the auction will go to Singapore's Community Chest, the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, the Children's Hospital at Westmead Sydney and Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders). Every dollar that you pay will go to these worthwhile charities. Singapore Airlines has three important partners for this charity event : ExxonMobil Aviation, eBay and PayPal. Singapore Airlines and eBay plan for the auction to be conducted some weeks prior to the flight. For more information on the charities, partners and how to register for notification on the auction details, please visit singaporeair.com/a380 |

As a shareholder of SIA, I fully support their proposal to donate all the proceeds of the first commercial A380 flight. I estimate the potential revenue for the flight to be about S$1 mil. By having passengers bid on eBay for their ticket, they can easily raise 2-3,4 times this amount. As KiLr0y said, there it will be 'win win' for both SIA and the charities. Just imagine the publicity and good will this effort will generate for SIA...........definitely worth far more than the S$1 mil 'loss' in revenue....and the charities will get far more than it would have otherwise gotton if ticket sales were thru the usual channels..... Its a brilliant idea. Only hope is that they donate to really needy charities and not the kind that pays their CEOs 'peanuts'. |

Singapore Airlines (SIA) ? SIA?s budget airline associate Tiger Airways has appointed former JP Morgan Securities' Hong Kong transportation research head, Peter Negline, as its chief financial officer ? a move suggesting that the budget carrier is indeed earnestly preparing for its IPO. A veteran of two decades in the financial sector, Mr Negline was involved in the Qantas IPO in 1995; the unwinding of cross shareholdings between SIA, Delta and SwissAir in 1999; and primary and secondary share placements for Thai Airways in 2003. Tiger said Mr Negline would focus on optimising the company's financial position as it pursues aggressive fleet expansion and network development across Asia-Pacific. Tiger's president and CEO Tony Davis has previously been quoted as saying that his airline was eyeing a listing possibly late next year. And Mr Negline, with over 20 years experience in aviation financing, research and funds management with global, blue chip financial institutions, is now available to help make that happen. |

Singapore Airlines achieved a 1.7% YoY growth in systemwide passenger carriage (in revenue passenger kilometres) while capacity (measured in available seat kilometres) reduced by 1.4% in June 2007. This led to an overall improvement in passenger load factor of 2.5 ppt to 82.4%. The number of passengers carried rose by 3.9% over the same month last year to 1.57 million. Overall cargo traffic (measured in freight tonne kilometres) continued to register growth of 3.1%, which outpaced the systemwide capacity growth of 2.1%. This resulted in a modest growth in cargo load factor of 0.6 ppt. |

According to the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper, Singapore Airlines (SIA) could be selling its 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic for a tidy profit. The paper said that SIA is in the early stages of examining options an have talked to a number of investment banks about the review. SIA has refused to comment on the report. The article quoted analysts as saying that the 49% stake could be worth between and GBP 900 million and GBP 1 billion (or S$2.75-3 billion) for a gain on its initial investment worth $1.6 billion. The deal could attract not only other airlines, but private equity money, along the lines of the attempted takeover of Qantas by a private equity grouping earlier in the year. We view SIA's potential exit from VA positively as VA has not lived up to its initial expectations, notwithstanding the volatile market conditions and escalating fuel costs. Associate earnings from its stake have been vacillating between marginal profitability to significant losses. We believe that SIA's management, when it bought its stake looked to exert some management control and increase efficiencies, but has been unable to do so. While we believe that GBP 1 bn is at the high end of the valuation scale, we believe that the current investment environment would still be able to put a significant premium to SIA's initial investment cost. A more likely valuation, in our opinion, would place the stake at around S$2.3 bn, which would result in a surplus gain of S$700m on acquisition costs, although the carrying value may be significantly marked down ? SIA has not disclosed its carrying value of its stake in VA in its accounts. Overall, we view this development positively - SIA will have a proper exit strategy for a lackluster performer, and will yield a valuation surplus of at least 50 cts per share. Funds may either be returned to shareholders or contribute towards SIA's investment war chest for investment in the burgeoning Asian aviation sector. We maintain our Buy recommendation on SIA, with a target price of S$21.00. |

Corinne Png, an analyst at Citigroup in Singapore said any disposal of the VA stake was to be welcomed but added that the stake in the British carrier may be worth less than reported. "We view this potential exit strategy positively as VA has not contributed significantly to SIA's bottom-line nor network connectivity in the past 7 years, even though SIA paid a large sum for the stake," she said in a note to investors. Singapore Airlines stock underperformed the broader Singapore stock market <.STI>, up half a percent at S$19.10. The shares have risen just over 9 percent since the start of the year. Singapore Airlines acquired 49 percent of Virgin Atlantic for 600.25 million pounds in December 1999. Png said that the Singapore state-controlled carrier would be able to book a "bumper disposal gain" if it could sell the stake for around 950 million pounds. "A substantial disposal gain is likely as we believe the carrying value of VA is relatively low; SIA had previously written off 1.59 billion pounds goodwill following the acquisition." A sale could result in further capital management by Singapore Airlines, similar to the hefty S$2.16 billion ($1.4 billion) payout to investors announced in May, or could be used to fund aircraft or airline purchases, she added. |
