It said this in response to queries from MediaCorp about whether it was considering the measure after Japan, France, Italy, Spain and Belgium all said they would limit short sales to help smooth recent volatility. The 15-day ban undertaken by regulators in the Eurozone aims to put a lid on market speculation and to prevent abuse of the trading strategy. Short selling takes advantage of expected market declines, where investors sell shares that have been borrowed, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price. Some regulators argue that while short selling is legal, if deepens market declines during times of high volatility. SGX said it did not limit short selling in the bourse even during the height of the global financial crisis in 2008. On Thursday, it increased the margin requirements for derivatives linked to equity indices as a way of increasing protection against possible sharp losses in the futures market. The exchange said it conducts regular margin reviews of its products as part of risk management. " In adverse market conditions or increased market volatility, margin reviews are performed more frequently to ensure sufficient collateralisation of trades," SGX said in an emailed statement. It raised the margin requirement, or the amount an investor needs to deposit before a transaction can be executed, for index-linked contracts by around 10 per cent. As a contingency measure, SGX said it has completed a public consultation for the introduction of circuit breakers in the securities market. The proposed circuit breakers will apply to component stocks in the STI and the MSCI Singapore Free Index, where trading can occur within a price band of 10 per cent from the reference price.
