Several Mobile Phone Vendors Post Thousands of Unit SalesJAKARTA (IFT) – Several mobile phone vendors recorded thousands of unit sales during the Indonesia International Information Communication Expo and Conference (ICC) on June 8-12, 2011. On the average, they sold one thousand mobile phone units per day. The sale of Nexian products achieved more than five thousand units, according to Yadi Jaya Kusuma, Vice President of Corporate Banking Retail & Modern Channel of Selular Group. The products consist of various categories, including touchscreen, qwerty and android. Nexian also recorded five hundred units of pre-ordered tablet products.   PT TiPhone Mobile, a brand holder of TiPhone, posted one thousand units per day average sale and 120 units pre-order sale, according to Handy Situmorang, General Manager of TiPhone Mobile. “For the future, we expect sales of one thousand units of tablets per month," he said.    Several vendors did not target high sales during the ICC exhibition. They prefer to introduce the brands and the types of the cellphone, aiming to form brand awareness and get the market’s interest   and response.    This year, Nexian will focus on Android and touchscreen sales based on the high public’s zest at the ICC fair, Yadi said. By year-end, Nexian expects to sell about 30 types of mobile phones.   The company targets to sell 500 thousand cellphones a month. In the second quarter of 2011, it projects to sell 1.5 million units. The figure is estimated to surge 15-20 percent year-on-year. About 65 percent of the target will come from low-end mobile phone, 25 percent from medium segment and 10 percent from Android.    TiPhone, on the other hand, will develop qwerty mobile phone and offers more variants to the market. “In the second quarter, we expect 25 percent sale growth,” Handy said.   The ICC event was visited by 150 thousand visitors, lower than the initial estimate of 200 thousand. " The total transaction value of information technology, telecommunication and gadget products is forecast to reach Rp 700 billion (US$ 81.9 million)," said Soehoet Kosasih, Chief Operational Officer of Dyandra Promosindo, the event organizer. Selular Group Establishes 30 New OutletsJAKARTA (IFT) - Selular Group, a mobile phone distributor and owner of Nexian vendor, targets to build 30 new outlets, called the Selular Shop, by the end of this year. The addition of these stores will boost the company's revenue to 30 percent. Agus Pranata, Chief Commerce and Retail Officer of Selular Group, said that the company is currently managing about 50 outlets in Indonesia. The additional outlets are estimated to increase mobile phones’ retail sales volume to about 30 thousand units per month from last year’s 25 thousand units. The company is setting up infrastructures and human resources to improve the quality of the outlets’ services. It is anticipating the trend of increasing sales of smartphones and tablet computers by enhancing marketing education and strategies. According to Agus, this year's transition from regular mobile phones to smartphones will increase. Selular Group’s smartphone devices such as BlackBerry, HTC, Samsung, and Nexian. " In Selular Group, the BlackBerry still dominates this year’s sales with an estimated 50 to 60 percent," Agus told IFT. Cellular phone sales from Selular Shops contribute greatly to revenue with 75 percent. Other contributions come from voucher sales with 25 percent among others. Selular Grup is owned by Affinity Group which was bought by Spice i2i Ltd from Singapore for US$ 175 million in June. Last year, Affinity Group earned US$ 680 million in revenues with US$ 71.7 million gross profit. PT Trikomsel Oke Tbk (TRIO), publicly listed gadget distributor, recorded 40 percent of additional new stores in the first half. The company targets to add 150 new stores this year, bringing the total to 900 stores by year-end. As of June, the company has added 60 new stores. (*) |

So I just finished a big tour de Southeast Asia. There is really only one story going on over there – Mobile. Check out this research from BCG (BRICI = Brazil, Russia, India, China, Indonesia):
All of this is happening here and now. There are huge opportunities for any mobile startups to break into these countries. Let me give you a taste of Indonesia. Two years ago Nokia had 60% of the phone market. A retailer called Nexian had just started up with the idea of importing and reselling Chinese manufactured phones and branding them as Nexian phones. Fast forward to today. Nokia is down to 30% of the market!!! Nexian is one of the dominant retailers, they just sold to the Spice Mobile family (large conglomerate in India exploding across Asia, Middle East and Africa). You can get a stylish QWERTY phone with a big display with pre-loaded apps including email, Opera Mini, Facebook, Twitter, Mig33, Nimbuzz IM, private messenger, widgets, news reader, etc, all for < $40 (in some cases closer to $20). You can also get a Nexian Android phone for $150-$200. Everybody is ripping off Nexian’s go to market strategy. The telecos have launched new brands to sell these phones. The retailers have gone to China, sourced phones and are re-selling them. The Chinese manufacturers have opened up retail in Indonesia (Huaiwei has their own stores!). On top of that I counted at least 20 Nexian clones, small companies with the same strategy as Nexian. Nexian has countered by offering apps & services on these $20-$40 phones. People don’t have data plans, so Nexian does micro-billing via the carriers. 10c/week for Facebook, 5c/day for IM, $3/month for chat as examples. It works, they make millions a month from it. There are roughly 170M phone users in Indonesia. For Canadian startups, this means that there has never been a better opportunity to build mobile apps and “go global”. Check out if your app has a competitor in markets like Indonesia. All these phones in Indonesia (and China and India) are on a single platform with a single OS -> MediaTek. Port your app to MediaTek and go get deals with any of the manufacturers, the Nexians and their clones, the operators, etc. You can either try and get a royalty up front with your app pre-installed on the phone, or you can work out a rev share agreement on the service, or whatever other monetization scheme you have in mind. There are plenty of folks who can help you with local business development. For instance, if you are a mobile app startup and you think Indonesia looks hot, Andy Zain runs the Indonesian Mobile Monday and Founder’s Institute. He is incredibly well connected in the teleco scene and he has helped startups like mig33 and Payfone (you are also free to reach out to me for contacts and info as well). In every country there are guys or companies like him. A bit of research and networking and you can find them. Next week I’ll have some more on the start-up scene in Singapore, including some info from the leading startup blog over there (sgentrepreneurs.com). |

Apple Profit Tops Estimates on Record SalesApple Profit Top Estimates on Record Sales of IPhone, IPad
Apple Inc. (AAPL), the biggest technology company by market value, reported third-quarter profit that topped estimates, lifted by record sales of iPhones and iPad tablets. The stock jumped to an all-time high in late trading. Net income in the period more than doubled to $7.31 billion, or $7.79 a share, from $3.25 billion, or $3.51, a year earlier, Apple said today in a statement. Sales climbed 82 percent to $28.6 billion. Analysts had predicted profit of $5.87 a share and revenue of $25 billion, according to Bloomberg data. The report eased investors’ concerns that sales would suffer from the lack of a new iPhone -- Apple’s best-selling product -- which isn’t expected until September. The Cupertino, California-based company also has been operating without the day-to-day attention of Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January. “Apple is a juggernaut and they prove it every quarter,” said Mike Binger, an Apple investor at Thrivent Asset Management in Appleton, Wisconsin, which has about $70 billion under management. Apple shares jumped as much as 7.5 percent to $405 in extended trading after the results were posted. The stock, up 17 percent this year, had closed at a record $376.85 in regular Nasdaq Stock Market trading. IPhone OrdersApple’s expansion into China and other fast-growing economies helped make up for slower growth in the U.S. Apple sold 20.3 million iPhones and 9.3 million iPads in the third quarter, which ended June 25. Mac computer sales were 3.95 million, short of a record. The iPad -- a product that’s less than two years old -- is now Apple’s second-biggest source of revenue, after the iPhone. The company said profit in the fourth quarter would be about $5.50 a share on sales of $25 billion. Analysts on average predict $6.41 a share on sales of $27.7 billion. Apple typically gives a lowball forecast, making it less relevant to investors, said Thrivent’s Binger. “The forecast is meaningless,” he said. Gross profit margin, the percentage of sales left after deducting production costs, was 41.7 percent last quarter, compared with 39.1 percent a year earlier, Apple said. “We’re thrilled to deliver our best quarter ever, with revenue up 82 percent and profits up 125 percent,” Jobs said in the statement. With the CEO and company co-founder on medical leave, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook is handling day-to-day leadership. Next CEO? Since Jobs went on leave, some members of Apple’s board have discussed CEO succession with executive recruiters, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier today, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The talks included at least one head of a high-profile technology company, the Journal said. The health of Jobs, who has struggled with a rare form of cancer, is the only major concern for Apple, said Erick Maronak, chief investment officer of Victory Capital Management Inc. in New York, which has about $2.5 billion under management. “In the end it’s really all going to circle back to Jobs -- his health, his role,” Maronak said. Apple is his firm’s largest holding, accounting for about 5 percent, he said. Jobs's health wasn't discussed on Apple's conference call today, and no analysts inquired about it. Apple’s Chinese sales reached $3.8 billion, up almost sixfold from a year earlier. The company plans to open 30 stores in the September period, including in Hong Kong, broadening a retail chain that generated $3.5 billion in sales last quarter. “China was very key to our results,” Cook said on a conference call. “We’re just scratching the surface. There is an incredible opportunity for Apple there.” Topping ProjectionsApple typically reports results that exceed analysts’ estimates. The company had previously beaten the average earning projection for at least 29 straight quarters, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “The biggest question with Apple is: Is this story sustainable?” said Shaw Wu, an analyst with Sterne Agee & Leach Inc. in San Francisco. “Obviously, it is.” In the third quarter, Apple also sold 7.54 million iPod media players, compared with the 8.5 million predicted by analysts. That product is the oldest of Apple’s main mobile devices, and it faces cannibalization from the iPhone and iPad, which also can play music. It was the first time since 2008 that the third-quarter results didn’t include the release of a new iPhone. The new model slated for September has a faster chip for processing data and an 8-megapixel camera, two people familiar with the matter said last month. The company also is preparing to introduce a new Mac operating system, called OS X Lion, and the iCloud service, which let users store, synchronize and access content such as music, pictures and documents across different Apple devices. “We are extremely pleased with the momentum of our business,” Peter Oppenheimer, the company’s chief financial officer, said on the call. |

Apple Overtakes Nokia for Mobile Ad Impressions in EuropeBy: Ian Mansfield | During Q2 2011, over 2 billion ad impressions were served on Apple devices in Europe, propelling Apple past Nokia for the first time, according to figures compiled by InMobi. Over the same period, Nokia devices dropped by 0.9 share points and now represent 18.7% of ads in the region. One of every five ads across Europe is now on Apple manufactured devices.
As a result of Apple's iOS popularity, Android's operating system has lost 5.0 share points against iOS's gain of 3.3 over the past quarter. RIM, whilst ranked third in terms of operating systems, saw the highest gain during this period, gaining 6.1 share points. Despite this though, Android remains the top mobile platform by ad requests with nearly 25% of all requests. Rob Jonas, VP and MD Europe and Middle East at InMobi, comments: " The Q2 2011 results show another major inflection point for Mobile Advertising in Europe. Smart devices, driven by iPad, iPhone, and Android devices, are now defining the mobile experience for the majority of Europeans. The next phase of mobile advertising is upon us. It is now up to brands and agencies to capitalise with immersive, creative experiences delivered at scale for consumers." Total mobile advertising impressions on the InMobi network in Europe grew by 21 percent in Q2, primarily driven by smartphone impressions, which grew by 31%. Three out of every five mobile impressions in Europe are now on a smart device. Among European nations, United Kingdom and Spain showed the fastest growth in Q2. Survey Shows Smartphone Use Growing Rapidly with Regional DifferencesBy: Ian Mansfield | Mobile devices are gaining popularity very rapidly worldwide. An online survey by IDG Global Solutions (IGS) identified differences in favored smartphone brands and usage by region, but it is clear that the traditional cellphone is fading fast.
More than two-thirds of the nearly 13,700 online respondents to a 16-country survey said they use a smartphone for personal (73%) or business (69%) purposes. Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson dominate the market depending on the country. In business and personal use, Nokia and Apple lead the way in Europe. In the US, Apple (29%) and Blackberry (26%) are very competitive for business users whereas Samsung (15%) is second to Apple (33%) for personal use. Smartphone Use Smartphone owners show a new behavior: 70% browse the Internet regularly and use mobile applications. These devices are no longer limited to calls, email, and text messages as people go online from home, on the move, and in the office. When surfing the web on smartphones, respondents indicated that general and IT news are most popular, followed by social networking access. GPS navigation topped instant messaging as an application. Most countries' GPS usage surpassed 50% led by Finland (77%), Sweden (75%), Denmark (88%), Brazil (68%), Australia (66%), Germany (57%), Spain (56%), US (54%), and UK (41%). Instant messaging use reached 68% in Brazil, China (67%), and Mexico (64%). Behind Canada's 46% are Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and Sweden at between 43%-to-48% and the US (40%), France (38%), Germany (34%), and UK (26%). Geolocation use for vouchers, deals, and offers is not a major factor in most geographies: China (42%), Brazil (31%), Italy (30%), and US (29%). App Downloads According to the IGS survey, app vendors are in good position. A large majority of respondents said they download apps to their phones and also pay for apps. Two-thirds regularly use between one to seven apps with the most popular being general news, social media, gaming, and IT news. Tablets Taking Off Twenty percent of all respondents own a tablet. Tablet growth is set to take off over the next 12 months as 67% are planning to buy one. Apple owns this category in all countries with 80% market share, followed by Samsung Galaxy at 9% worldwide. The IGS survey revealed that half of all tablet owners use it for work. The most popular uses are web browsing (93%), email (84%), mobile apps (72%), watching videos (69%), and reading publications (66%). Sixty-seven percent of all tablet owners share it with colleagues or family, spreading the tablet experience to much more than the 20% ownership figure. Data Commentary IDC reported last month that the worldwide smartphone market is expected to grow by 55% this year compared with 2010. Vendors are projected to ship 472 million phones in 2011. IDC, an IDG subsidiary, predicts the Android operating system will own 40% of the market in the second half of this year, posing a serious threat to Apple, Nokia, and Blackberry. " The dramatic growth in smartphone and tablet use is exciting news for media companies as their audiences can browse the Internet and engage with brands 24/7," said Christina Carstensen, director, Mobile Strategy, IGS in London. " The new technologies have changed user behavior and expectations. Our survey shows that tablets are an unstoppable trend this year with two-thirds of consumers planning to buy a tablet in the coming months." " Tech marketers are recognizing the value of mobile advertising as the device market heats up," said Matthew Yorke, president, IGS. " I expect spending on mobile to rise sharply in the coming year much like what happened with social media marketing over the past two years." Methodology Almost 13,700 people from 16 countries completed surveys last February and March that were promoted across IDG media brands including Computerworld, PCWorld, Network World, CIO and Macworld. |
