NEW YORK, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp (BAC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Chief Executive Kenneth Lewis acquired 200,000 of the bank's shares, his second purchase in less than three weeks, on Wednesday, a day before the stock fell to its lowest level since 1984.

Four other Bank of America directors, including lead outside director O. Temple Sloan Jr, also acquired shares this week, as did Brian Moynihan, who replaced John Thain last month as head of investment banking and wealth management.

Lewis spent about $958,000 on the shares, paying between $4.78 and $4.81 each, a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing shows. That boosted his direct stake to 1,660,997 shares, worth $8 million based on Thursday's close. Lewis owns another 542,235 shares in various trusts, the filing shows.

Bank of America shares have fallen 86 percent since the company announced plans last Sept. 15 to buy Merrill Lynch & Co, a transaction that closed on Jan 1.

Large losses at Merrill prompted the bank last month to obtain a federal bailout, in which the government agreed to inject $20 billion of capital and share in losses on $118 billion of troubled assets.

According to other SEC filings, Sloan acquired 95,000 shares on Thursday, while another director, retired Gen. Tommy Franks, bought 30,000. Directors Virgis Colbert and Charles Rossotti, who joined the board from Merrill last week, bought a respective 15,000 and 10,000 shares. Moynihan bought 20,000.

Lewis also bought 200,000 shares on Jan. 20 for roughly $1.2 million. Sloan and several other directors also bought the bank's shares in January.

Bank of America shares closed Thursday up 14 cents at $4.84, after falling as low as $3.77. They are down 66 percent this year. (Reporting by Jonathan Stempel, editing by Matthew Lewis)
