SIA to replace engines on three A380 aircraft, flights grounded Satish Cheney
The flights were grounded in Sydney, Melbourne and London. This latest development follows the recent Rolls-Royce engine failure of Qantas flight QF32, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing at Changi Airport on Nov 4. SIA said Rolls-Royce had recommended further inspections of the engines because of oil staining. It stressed the measures were precautionary and unrelated, as the oil stains were different from the oil leak in the Qantas turbines. All three returning planes will be fitted with spare Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines — and are expected to be ready for take-off in about two days. SIA said it expected minimal flight disruptions and that its Boeing 747s and 777s would be used as substitutes. SIA’s grounding of the three planes yesterday came just two days after it had said its A380 fleet was problem-free. The company said this turnaround did not mean initial checks were not thorough and stressed that the grounding was purely a precautionary measure following the oil stains in the engines. SIA chief executive Chew Choon Seng said: “We do not pass judgement on the condition of the plane until we get confirmation from the manufacturers that the planes are safe to operate. And this is a continuous programme. In other words, even as they analyse the data, the observations, they then come back to us again with new recommendations. “In fact, the level of scrutiny and close monitoring of the planes now is at a very high level.” The latest incidents involving the Trent 900 engines are not the first. In September last year, an SIA A380 flight had to return to Paris after an engine malfunctioned. And in August last year, a Lufthansa flight had problems as well. Regarding the somewhat tarnished image of the A380, Mr Chew said: “Just because a car is recalled does not mean you cannot continue to use it in the meantime.” On Tuesday, the European Aviation Safety Agency said it was closely monitoring investigations into the Qantas incident. It had also issued orders twice this year, advising carriers on extra inspections needed for the Trent 900 engines. Emirates and Air France, which also have A380 planes, do not use the Trent 900 engines. Theirs are fitted with engines from Engine Alliance. Rolls-Royce had no comment on SIA’s latest moves but said engineers were investigating the matter. SIA said it had been assured that Rolls-Royce was doing everything possible in its investigations. Meanwhile, SIA said it would stick to its existing orders for eight new A380s. Qantas’ six A380s have been grounded since Nov 4. The company is expected to give an update on the issue today. SINGAPORE — Singapore Airlines (SIA) is replacing the engines on three of its 11 A380 aircraft. |

BRANDS NO LONGER HAVE QUALITY Tests uncovered oil stains in three Rolls-Royce engines on Singapore Airlines' A380 superjumbos, prompting the airline to yank the planes from service Wednesday just two days after Qantas announced troubling oil leaks on their A380s. |

Today is a Good Day to Buy SIA. Currently trading at $15.26. 1. Price is in an Uptrend Channel with potential high of $16.40. 2. Just bound off its support level of $15.10, a signal that it's heading up. 3. Although MACD lines have not reverse up yet, but huge Buy In volume today convince me that it's going to reverse soon. 4. Stochastic has crossed and just begin to move up. Still in Oversold region, a good time to start Buying. 5. Revenue, Profit and Cash Flow for QoQ and YoY are good. Although profit for 2009 was weak, but with the 2 IRs opening and YOG promotion of Singapore. I'm expecting this year's profit to be very good. This is just my personal analysis. You invest at your own risk. Good luck to all. |

This is the level just before September 2008 plunge. You should have bought it a week ago. I think there could be a pullback between now and the next reporting, so I plan to reenter during the pullback.

Well, I'm not talking about personal spending of all kinds. I'm talking about local organizations and government sectors choosing national airline as a priority. It's money from one pocket putting into another pocket with minimum outflow.

Yes, I agree, bank your money and take loan from local banks - DBS, UOB & OCBC, dont care of the interest rate, buy your condos from Capitaland, dont care of the price, that what happen in some other contries, Singapore should follow too!

SIA should also give support locally, and our local organizations should choose national airline to fly rather than picking the cheapest. This happens in some other countries. Singapore should follow too.

Thats the way to go SIA! As a shareholder, I agree with SIA approach. Unless the local sporting houses can churn out similiar top swimmers like the Aussies, and other professional althetics, i cant see SIA having a mutual benefits and/or relationship with them. | ||||
