Thousands pay respects Singaporeans from all walks of life turn up at Sri Temasek at the Istana in an outpouring of respect and sadness S Ramesh and Joanne Chan SINGAPORE There were children in buses, and for those who made their way individually to the Istana’s Orchard Road entrance, buses were ready to ferry them to the grounds of Sri Temasek, the official residence of the Prime Minister. Foreign dignitaries, such as the Crown Prince of Johor, and ministers were also there, as all walks of life were represented in an outpouring of respect and sadness at the wake of Mdm Kwa, wife of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. On hand to receive them were Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, his wife Ho Ching and Mrs Lee’s younger son Hsien Yang. Among the many visitors, one group came with plans to remember Mrs Lee for the future. Students from Nanyang Primary and Nanyang High School, where Mrs Lee’s children had studied, have come to see her as a source of inspiration. And the Nanyang Primary’s chairman of the board of governors, Madam Wee Bee Hoon, said the school plans to name its library after her as well as unveil a statue of Mrs Lee during its Founder’s Day celebrat ions next August. Other groups that came included leading members of the labour movement and about 100 staff members — wearing black armbands — of Lee & Lee, the law firm Mrs Lee helped found. As many bowed before the coffin, others recounted their stories about Mrs Lee to the media. Former CEO of the Housing and Development Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Dr Liu Thai Ker, said: “Once, my wife and I were invited to the Istana for an official dinner and when we arrived, Mrs Lee just pulled my wife’s hand and said: ‘Let’s sit down and talk about family’. That was a very strong human touch, even though it was an official dinner.” Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was also there. In his condolence letter to Mr Lee, he paid tribute to Mrs Lee saying she was an exceptional woman, who passed on excellent family values to her children. Said Mr Goh: “History is replete with examples of children of powerful leaders who have been disappointing. That your two sons and daughter are serving Singapore at the highest levels and upholding your family values is her legacy for Singapore.” Senior Minister S Jayakumar, at a separate event, recalled the last overseas trip Mrs Lee made with her husband, to Bahrain, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. “She had then of course had one stroke previously. — Thousands of Singaporeans turned up yesterday to pay their respects to Madam Kwa Geok Choo, streaming in from 10am when the gates of the Istana opened, till they closed at 5pm. |

London bus driver in hit-and-run accident out on bail
05:55 AM Oct 04, 2010
SINGAPORE - London police have released on bail a man who was allegedly involved in a road accident last week that killed Singaporean medical student Tan Mingwei (picture).
The 50-year-old double-decker bus driver was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He is believed to have told detectives he had no idea the girl was under his bus, according to British media reports. A double-decker night bus has been recovered and is being examined by police. The driver will return to a police station later this year pending further enquiries, a New Scotland Yard press statement said. An inquest is scheduled to be held today. Ms Tan was believed to have been knocked down near Hampstead's Royal Free Hospital - where her shoes were found - and dragged 1.6km. Her body was found near Belsize Park Tube station in North London at about 2am on Thursday. She was pronounced dead on the spot. Her handbag, which contained a wallet, mobile phone and student ID was found on the road 150m away. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple injuries. Ms Tan reportedly died on her 20th birthday. She was due to start her third year at Peterhouse College, Cambridge University. Ms Tan is the younger daughter of Mr Tan Tarn How, a playwright and research fellow at Singapore's Institute of Policy Studies, and his wife, a dentist. The Tan family is in London and have asked to be left to grieve in private. Ms Tan, a former student of Raffles Girls' School and Raffles Junior College, received an A*Star National Science Scholarship in 2008 to read medicine. She was the president of Cambridge University's karate club. Dr Philip Pattenden, a senior tutor at Peterhouse College, said: "The death of Mingwei Tan, an undergraduate at Peterhouse who was due to start her third year at the college, is reported with much regret. "She was doing very well in medical sciences and was a popular member of our community, always full of joy. "She will be truly missed... The college is greatly saddened by its loss and extends its sympathy to the family," he was quoted as saying. Flowers and messages of tribute have been left at the site where Ms Tan's body was found. Those who knew her also posted messages of condolence online and on Facebook. "We will miss you. Your lovely sweet smile and your ever-passionate attitude towards things in life will always remain in our hearts. May God bless and watch over your family as they go through this period," said one message from one of her former teachers. Dylan Loh |
