Sigh... doesn't Creative get it yet? The Apple IPod is so successful because its marketed as a fashion statement. No one cares about the technology behind it. I find Creative's Zen to be technically superior but its marketing really needs to improve. Otherwise cannot compete! |

CREATIVE ANNOUNCES Q3 FY07 FINANCIAL RESULTS SINGAPORE May 2, 2007 Creative Technology Ltd. (NASDAQ: CREAF), a worldwide leader in digital entertainment products, today announced financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2007, ended March 31, 2007. All financial results are stated in U.S. dollars. Revenues for the third quarter were $183.8 million, compared to revenues of $225.7 million for the same quarter last year. Net loss for the third quarter was $23.6 million, with a loss per share of $0.28, including restructuring charges of $3.5 million. This compares to a net loss of $114.3 million with a loss per share of $1.38 for the same period last year, including one-time charges of $41.6 million primarily related to goodwill and restructuring charges for 3Dlabs. "Our sales for the quarter in the United States and Asia came in below our expectations, with worldwide revenues coming in at $183.8 million. The lower revenues, with our operating expenses of $59.6 million before restructuring charges, resulted in an operating loss for the period," said Craig McHugh, president of Creative Labs, Inc. "During the quarter we continued to take steps that will reduce our operating expense level going forward," continued McHugh. "At the end of the quarter we reduced our worldwide headcount by approximately 10 percent. This resulted in restructuring charges of about $3 million. We are targeting to reduce our operating expenses to about $50 million by the end of our first fiscal quarter of 2008." "In the third quarter we made significant progress toward our goal of reducing our inventory, coming in 24 percent below the previous quarter and 45 percent lower year-over-year," continued McHugh. "Our efforts in reducing our inventory, while providing other key Creative Technology Q3 FY07 Results benefits, helped strengthen our cash position to $293 million. After the close of the quarter we utilized $75 million of this $293 million to pay down our $175 million syndicated term loan to $100 million, which will be reflected on our balance sheet for the current quarter." "Looking forward, we are very excited about key product introductions coming in the current quarter," continued McHugh. "With the potential we see for these exciting new products and our continued efforts to reduce operating expenses, we are now targeting to be profitable in the second half of the calendar year, with gross margins at 20 percent or higher." |

SINGAPORE, April 2 (Reuters) - Shares of Creative Technology Ltd. fell 1.03 percent at the open on Monday to S$9.65 after the maker of Nomad and Zen MP3 players warned of an operating loss on Friday. Creative, whose music players compete with Apple Inc.'s popular iPod, said last Friday it expects to report an operating loss of about $20 million in its fiscal third quarter, hit by lower-than-expected sales in the United States and Asia, and restructuring charges. The restructuring charges relate to cost reduction measures in the period ended March 31, its fiscal third quarter. Creative said it expects third-quarter sales of about $180 million, with gross profit margins above 20 percent. In January, Creative warned it would be hit by restructuring charges in the third quarter, but said it expected to break even before special charges. It also said it expected to stay profitable for the rest of 2007. "The size of the operating loss comes as a surprise to us," said OCBC Securities analyst Carey Wong. "In view of the latest profit warning, which we fear may not be the last as the fourth quarter also tends to be quite slow for Creative, we are revising down our FY07 estimates." Wong cut his full-year sales estimate for Creative by 9.5 percent to $1 billion, and raised his net loss forecast up sharply to $26 million from $4.6 million previously. The estimates exclude the one-time licence payment from Apple to settle all patent litigation over the iPod music player, which boosted Creative's earnings in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Creative's prospects remain grim, Citigroup analyst Horng Han Low said. "The competitive landscape remains intense in the MP3 segment, which is Creative's largest revenue contributor. Given the increasing, commoditisation of MP3 players and the need for scale, Creative lacks a new big killer application in its product mix to offset the challenges," he added.
