First Weekend iPhone Sales Top Nine Million, Sets New Record Apple today announced it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new iPhones on September 20. In addition, more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history. Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks. ?This is our best iPhone launch yet?more than nine million new iPhones sold?a new record for first weekend sales,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we?ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone?s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.? |

BlackBerry announced that it has signed a letter of intent with a consortium led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. to take the smartphone maker private in a deal worth $9 per share. The deal with Fairfax would total about $4.7b in value, as the consortium would acquire all the BlackBerry shares that Fairfax does not own for $9 per share. Fairfax currently owns about 10% of the company?s shares. Key customer Blackberry plunged 17% last Friday after the company issued a profit warning and slashed 30% of its workforce (4,500). Sales for 2Q to Aug?13 will come in at only US$1.6b, about half that of consensus expectations and will be writing down as much as US$960m in inventories. The inventory write-down was mainly for Z10 touch screen devices which the company had designated as its flagship model to compete with the iPhone. Net loss of the quarter is estimated to be 51c a share, way below expectations of 16c a share. On the other hand, Hi-P?s other major customer Apple is expected to post its best ever debut of their new iPhone models (6+m versus expectations of 5+m), notwithstanding that it was a disappointment when announced 2 weeks ago due to its high price point. |

Hi-P’s strong 2H performance seen. HIP’s 2QFY13 results were in line with our estimates as PATAMI swung from negative a year ago to SGD10.9m on the back of revenue of SGD285.0m (+13.2% y-o-y). As its existing clients are ramping up their new programs, Management is upbeat on its 2H performance. Management is now guiding for a better 2H performance (compared to 1H) in view of the new programs ramp-up by its existing customers. As we highlighted in our previous reports, we believe HIP will play an important role in the production chain of upcoming mid-end smartphones such as Apple’s new lower-priced iPhone. Management also said the group is now able to achieve decent yields from these projects despite the steep learning curve. In view of HIP’s strong operating cash flow and net cash pile of SGD85.2m, we see a possibility of the group buying back its own shares, similar to what it did a few days after it released its 1QFY13 results. In the last buyback, it bought a total of 7.5m shares amounting to SGD6.1m, with the highest price being SGD0.845/share. This will provide downside support to its share price. Reiterate BUY, with an unchanged SGD0.96 TP, based on a blended 13.5x FY13/FY14 P/E, -1 SD on the stock’s 3-year historical forward P/E. (OSK-DMG)

Maybank KE  noted of a rising trend in various brokers calling for a buy on Hi-P. Following OSMDMG’s Buy Call last week, Lim & Tan reiterated its BUY recommendation on Hi-P as house expect 2Q’13 profit to improve 50% qoq and turnaround from last year’s loss of $2m to $10.5m on the back of a revival in orders from Blackberry and are expecting 2H13 profit to surge a further 124% hoh to close to $40mln as the company secures a new contract from Apple for their low cost iPhones which are made of plastic casing (which is the forte of Hi-P) as well as a new program launch from Blackberry for their new A10 smart-phone. Also understand that Motorola under their new parent company Google will be launching a new smart-phone called Moto X, and Hi-P will be involved in the new program as well other customers providing stable orders include P& G, Nike and Amazon.

Counter is u p 5.2% today, following Apple’s ~5% jump in after trading hours, as the tech giant delivered stronger then expected 3Q results buoyed by strong quarterly sales of its iPhone. Analysts guides that in a bid to regain market share, Apple could begin rolling out smartphones and tablets with bigger screens in the coming quarters, with unconfirmed rumors that the tech giant and suppliers are currently testing on smartphone screens which are larger than four inches and tablet screens slightly less than 13 inches. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook also refused to disclose the possibility of a lower cost iPhone or any other products in the pipeline, despite market sources earlier indicating that Apple could be launching a low cost iPhone within the next few quarters as they attempt to win market share in emerging markets. We note that the latest Apple’s earnings figures could offer some respite to the recent share price decline in SGX-listed Hi-P, after key client Blackberry saw a less then successful take-up in its Blackberry 10 devices and industry leader Samsung lost ~US$25b of its market capitalization last month, as sales of Galaxy S4 missed estimates. Unconfirmed rumours has also tipped Hi-P to be involved in the manufacturing or production of Apple’s new low-cost iPhone. Overall, we note that Hi-P’s fundamentals remain strong, with share price backed by a net-cash of $96.7m or 15.5¢ per share and current valuations are undemanding, with the group trading at 10.5x ex-cash forward P/E versus its historical average of 17x. |

HI-P S$0.745-HIP SP Hi-P’s major customer Blackberry has been strengthening in the past 4 trading days by close to 10% after RBC Capital Market and Society Generale analysts raised expectations for shipments of new Blackberry 10 devices (Z10 and Q10 ) from 2.7mln units to 3.5mln units after channel checks revealed better than expected sales numbers. Hi-P’s share price has pulled back by 11% since peaking in May ’13, in line with the market’s decline. Besides declining in sympathy with the market, we believe the cessation of its share buy back program also caused some market concerns. We see the recent pull-back as another opportunity to buy the stock as we believe that the better than expected recovery of Blackberry and Apple coupled with new contributions from Nike and Amazon would see a strong rebound in the company’s profit this year by 177% to $50mln, putting its forward PE at an undemanding 12x against historical average of 15x. Maintain BUY. |

Bloomberg reported that Apple is giving orders for its new lower priced mass market iPhone to Pegatron Corp as part of a strategy to reduce risk and diversify its supply chain. Hi-P is a supplier to Pegatron Corp for Apple’s iPhones and iPads and the latest contract win for Pegatron Corp for the low cost iPhone will benefit Hi-P. More importantly, the new iPhone will have a plastic casing which is Hi-P’s forte as the co started off as a plastic injection moulding company and only started the metal component business 2 yrs ago. Together with new orders from Apple as well as the ramp up in Blackberry, Motorola and Amazon, Lim & Tan expects a 177% rise in profits for Hi-P this year to $50m, translating to an undemanding forward PE of 13x.

A share buyback, which is also known as a share repurchase, is when a company buys back its own shares from the market. The company may choose to tender for the shares or simply buy them directly from the market at the prevailing price.
A company may decide to buy back its shares for a number of reasons. Firstly, it can be a way of returning cash to shareholders. By reducing the number of shares in circulation, the earnings per share should increase in proportion to the number of shares repurchased. So, if all things remain equal, that is profits are unchanged, then the share price should rise. A company may also decide to buy back its shares because it can’t think of anything better to do with its cash hoard. If a company thinks that it may be sitting on too much cash it can choose to return the cash to shareholders either by paying a higher dividend or buying back shares. |
