good potential? Freight Links forms joint venture at Jiangyin New Port It will be the first to offer bonded warehousing in the area By GEORGE JOSEPH; Published December 27, 2006 (SINGAPORE) Singapore-listed logistics company Freight Links has taken its first steps in the growing market in Shanghai's inland feeder ports, by setting up a joint venture company at the Jiangyin New Harbour City. Huge potential: An artist's impression of the growing Jiangyin New Port area The region around the inland river ports of the Yangtze River is fast emerging as a huge logistics and transportation market as these ports position themselves as major feeders to the Shanghai Port, China's busiest and the world's third largest, behind Singapore and Hong Kong. Freight Links Express Holding recently signed an MOU to form the joint venture with Jiangyin Haigang International Logistics, a subsidiary of the Jiangyin Port Authority, to provide a transshipment link and inland freight distribution for Jiangyin and Wuxi in Jiangsu province. The joint venture company will will have an initial capital of 5 million yuan (S$988,000) with Freight Links holding a 51 per cent stake and Jiangyin Haigang International Logistics the rest. The joint venture will become the first to provide bonded warehousing in the new city being developed near the Jiangyin port. Jiangyin's annual throughput has grown at an average of 72 per cent per annum since 1992. It works closely with the Shanghai Port Group, offering an inexpensive alternative to land transportation to and from Yangshan Port. In 2005, Jiangyin's total trade exceeded US$6.7 billion, according to International Enterprise Singapore which took a group of Singapore companies on an exploratory trip in October to the Yangtze River area. With Shanghai being developed into an international shipping centre, the Jiangyin government is pushing ahead to develop its port logistics sectors. Freight Links Express Holdings' collaboration with the Jiangyin Haigang International Logistics company is a result of the IE Singapore trip. Shanghai International Port (Group) Co, operator of China's busiest container harbour, is handling record cargo volumes, as China's rising exports have pushed up demand. It handled 16 million boxes between January and September, 20 per cent more than a year earlier. Overall, the Shanghai Port is forecast to handle 21 million TEUs (20-foot containers) this year, compared with 18 million TEUs last year. This number is expected to rise to 34 million by 2010, according to estimates made by the group recently. Singapore's PSA International is among the world's top terminal operators vying for various projects connected with the three-phase development of the Shanghai Port. It is reported to be bidding for the third phase development of Shanghai's Yangshan project. Yangshan, with the existing Shanghai port, is part of China's efforts to build new terminals and upgrade old ones in three of its main economic areas: the Pearl River Delta, which covers Guangzhou and Shenzhen; the Yangtze River Delta, which includes Shanghai and Ningbo; and the Bohai Rim Area, which encompasses Qingdao, Dalian and Tianjin. An IE Singapore spokesman said the recent mission covered key cities along the Yangtze River, including Jiujiang, Huangshi, Wuhan, Zhenjiang, Jiangyin, Taicang and the Lingang industrial area. 'The trip enhanced communication between the Singapore and Chinese companies and gave our companies an insight to investment and collaboration opportunities,' IE said. Jacelyn Teo, assistant director, transport and logistics at IE Singapore, said Singapore companies have greater opportunities now to look for investments and partnerships to expand into the region, as China develops Shanghai Port. 'Freight Links' collaboration with Jiangyin Haigang International Logistics is a good example of how Singapore companies can take advantage of their expertise in port and logistics to expand their businesses and strategically venture overseas,' Ms Teo said. The joint venture company will also provide integrated logistics services including international freight forwarding, transhipment, international procurement and other value-added logistics services. It aims to tap into customers from various industries such as garment, steel, shipbuilding, electronics and petrochemicals. Freight Links chief executive officer Eric Khua said: 'As we are strengthening our network across the region, this joint venture will widen our Chinese market and provide a foothold for us to tap into the future growth and development of Jiangyin and Wuxi.' IE Singapore spearheads Singapore's efforts to develop its external economic wing and was formerly known as the Singapore Trade Development Board. While it helps Singapore companies to grow and internationalise successfully, it also works to position Singapore as a base for foreign businesses to expand into the region in partnership with Singapore-based companies. Freight Links Group has an international network of 120 freight forwarding agents covering almost 600 destinations worldwide. |
