Malaysian Banks pay MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH BETTER INTEREST RATES for Malaysian DEPOSITS. MALAYSIAN CENTRAL BANK SET the MINIMUM INTEREST RATE AT 2% per annum and NOTHING LESS. This protects the DEPOSITOR from INFLATION LOSSES on their BANK DEPOSITS. INFLATION EFFECTIVE CENTRAL BANK POLICY TO PROTECT CITIZENS' SAVINGS |

Think the spread between buying & selling price is more than 1%. Better check first if don't intend to keep till maturity.

its not totally risk free actually, the prices do fluctuate a bit. But if you are holding it to maturity it is risk free. Best to hold some cash for rainy days

Yep, pressured by regional central banks who guaranteed 100% deposits, MAS imposed full guarantee on all deposits. So local deposits are as safe as SGS bonds for now!

SGS bonds is definitely a better alternative than fixed deposits. It is one of the most closely kept secrets by financial insituitions that is relatively unknown to the public. If everyone knows about SGS bonds, the banks will not be able to make profits from fixed deposits. Fixed deposits are guaranteed by the government up to $20K while SGS bonds are issued by the government so it is risk-free. One advantage of SGS bonds over fixed deposits is that you can always sell your bonds in the secondary market if you need to cash it out while fixed deposits has a lock-in period. I did all these before. My conclusion is don't use your money to bless the banks. They pay you peanuts. You money got locked in as well! I'm no more searching for higher interest FD. Quite a hazzle and small gains. Of course, you won't lose. I'm now putting more into blue chips and some into trading. In the long run, I'm sure i can beat the FD interests. If you are not a risk taker, put you money into OCBC, DBS, UOB, SMRT, POST, SPH, ConfortDelgro, Transit etc, i'm sure you can beat the banks in the long run. Of course, you have to time your investment as well. One sign i've notice is also when banks start calling for funds using higher interest rate, there is a reason for it. It could mean market is going to rally or inter-bank rate is going to increase etc. They are are actually using your money to invest or to reduce their loan liability. |
