Genting SP: -0.9% at $1.735, consolidating below $1.77 after rising 27% from its Oct 4 low to a high at $1.80 Oct 28, as investors await the casino operator's 3Q results after market Thursday. Ahead of those keenly-awaited numbers, Nomura notes that Spore registered a 12% on-month decline in tourist arrivals in Sep, when the island state received 1.033m visitors, its lowest since Feb this year. It notes the weaker performance was dragged down by a 43% plunge in visitor arrivals from China when compared with Aug. " Investors could turn more cautious on GENS after the sharp reversal in Chinese visitor arrivals in Sep," the house says. It adds, " after the recent rebound in share price, GENS is now trading at 13.5X 2012F EV/EBITDA, a 29% premium to Macau's sector average of 10.5X. Unless it surprises the market significantly on the upside in its upcoming 3Q earnings results, we see a further 18% downside risk to its share price." Shares of casino operator Genting Singapore (GENS.SI) rose as much as 2.6% on Tuesday on expectations the company will report higher quarterly earnings on Thursday, traders said.
At 10:22 a.m., Genting shares were up 1.7% at $1.755, outperforming the broader Straits Times Index < .FTSTI> , which was 0.5% higher. The company is slated to announce its result on Thursday after the market close. “Generally, we expect their result to be better than the previous quarter because the whole gaming market in Singapore is likely to have increased,” said a local trader.
RBS wrote in a report last week that it forecast Genting to report adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of $371 million for its third quarter, up from $347 million in the previous quarter.
RBS said the strong results of Marina Bay Sands (MBS), the rival casino of Genting’s Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, suggested that the city-state’s gaming market remained robust. But Genting may have lost market share given MBS’s gaming volume growth during the quarter, RBS noted.
MBS, the Singapore casino of Las Vegas Sands (LVS.N), delivered US$414 million ($526 million) in EBITDA, exceeding internal projections, driven by a 37% surge in “VIP” or high-roller gambling volumes.

Genting SP: Deutsche maintains Hold, TP $1.89. Trimming earnings and TP, add that few surprises expected expect the Spore gaming market to post robust growth of over 20% in a seasonally stronger 2H. Growth, however is likely to come from MBS which delivered strong 3Q operational trends. Believe GENS will be in a better position to fend off market share loss in 2012 as it adds high-end suites/villas and enhances its non-gaming product offerings from the West Zone. Marginally revise down TP to $1.89 on a 2012 EV/EBITDA multiple of 11x. |
