Nikkei Ends Higher On Futures BuyingTOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks continued higher Tuesday, with the Nikkei Stock Average climbing 120.47 points, or 0.82%, to end the day at 14,778.51. The yen's rise briefly weighed on stocks in early morning trade. However, the benchmark Nikkei average began surging from mid-morning, supported by intermittent buying of stock index futures. Speculators who are betting that stocks will continue to move higher appear to have been buying futures due to the landslide victory of the ruling LDP in Sunday's upper house election. The Nikkei average continued to rise steadily in the afternoon, pushed up in part by an ascendant Softbank Corp. The trading value on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange totaled about 2.08 trillion yen on a preliminary basis.

Nikkei second day surge on euphoria at the Abe winning election. HSI took the cue from Nikkei and Dow Jones super surge last week. STI lags but has good to be careful and play only on selective counters.   Pennies are still in demand as they are viewed as less of a risk at current undervalued situation..   Think penny play will hot up when correction of the major stock indices happen.  |

Japan Govt Upgrades Econ View, Sees Signs Of Self-Sustaining RecoveryTOKYO--The Japanese government raised its view of the economy for the third straight month in July, saying there are signs of a self-sustaining recovery. In its monthly economic report released Tuesday, the government repeated the wording it used in June--" the economy is picking up steadily" --and added that " areas of self-sustaining recovery can be observed." The report also said consumer prices are " leveling off," raising the Cabinet Office's assessment from the previous month that the pace of price declines is " moderating." The positive assessment follows the Bank of Japan's upbeat view earlier this month that the economy is " starting to recover moderately." " Signs of a virtuous economic cycle are emerging," a Cabinet Office official said, referring to higher output and profits that lead to greater capital expenditure and wage increases, stimulating demand for goods and services. But the official was quick to add that the economy has yet to fully enter this cycle, noting that increases in prices and capital expenditure are limited to small segments of the economy, and that sustained wage growth has yet to be seen. The assessment on capital expenditure was also upgraded for the first time in four months. " Capital investment has mostly stopped declining, and has registered upticks in some sectors," the report said. The increase in investment activity was most pronounced in the retail sector, where supermarkets and convenience store chains are actively opening new outlets, the official said. At the same time, though, key manufacturing sectors, such as electronics, steel and machinery have barely seen an increase in investment, the official added. The Cabinet Office maintained its assessment of exports, saying " upticks are observable in some sectors." But the report added that deficits in service and goods trade have begun decreasing as auto exports remain strong in the U.S. and have picked up in China. The deflationary situation is easing, the report said, indicating that consumer prices have begun leveling off for goods such as food products, TVs and personal computers. |

Nikkei Opens Lower On Dlr's Fall Vs YenTOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks opened lower Tuesday, with the Nikkei Stock Average sliding more than 100 points to trade in the mid-14,500. The Dow Jones industrial average ended Monday's trade only 1.81 points higher. The dollar dropped to the lower-99 yen level amid a lack of fresh incentives at home and abroad, prompting investors to lock in recent gains. Buying supported by the landslide victory of the ruling LDP in Sunday's upper house election appears to be taking a breather.

Nikkei Ends Slightly Higher After Abe CommentsTOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday, with the Nikkei Stock Average rising 68.13 points, or 0.47%, to end the day at 14,658.04. Gains in early trade prompted profit-taking, briefly sending the Nikkei average into negative territory. In the afternoon, however, the dollar's recovery to the 100 yen level fueled purchases of exporters and other stocks. Stocks extended their afternoon gains after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discussed his growth-strategy plans in a press conference.

Constitutional Reform Backers Still Short Of Vote ThresholdDespite its huge win Sunday, the LDP and the two opposition camps most inclined to rewrite the Constitution took fewer than the 100 upper house seats they needed for a two-thirds majority. The shortfall means they would have to curry support from the LDP's coalition partner, New Komeito, or members of the badly beaten Democratic Party of Japan to propose constitutional amendments for a national referendum. Initiating amendments takes a two-thirds majority vote in each Diet house. The LDP, the Japan Restoration Party and Your Party easily have enough votes themselves in the lower house. But they failed to reach the magic number of 162 in the upper house. New Komeito has enough seats to bring them over the two-thirds line but is skittish about altering the never-amended postwar Constitution. Abe hopes for cooperation from parts of the DPJ, which is divided on the issue. The prime minister initially sounded eager to first rewrite Article 96, which sets the rules for the amendment process. But lately he has moved away from that position and has sounded open to more discussion. During the upper house campaign, he mentioned the possibility of compromise on the LDP's proposed constitutional changes, showing a willingness to accommodate other parties' views. " I think we've reached the point where we can realistically discuss amending the Constitution," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Sunday on a Nippon Television program. But New Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi told reporters he thinks " the public didn't give a high priority (to constitutional reform) in this election." Some in the LDP say that entertaining the possibility of adding environmental and other new rights to the Constitution could help bring wary parties into the discussion.   |

Nikkei Opens Higher On LDP's Landslide VictoryTOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday, with the Nikkei Stock Average climbing 180.11 points to start the day at 14,770.02. The ruling LDP and its coalition partner, New Komeito, secured an upper house majority in Sunday's election, giving the ruling bloc control of both chambers of the Diet. With PM Shinzo Abe's economic measures now likely to proceed more smoothly, investors are buying a broad range of stocks. However, the Nikkei average is top-heavy, as investors are also selling stocks to lock in gains amid concerns of an overheating. |

Nikkei Tumbles On Futures SellingTOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks slid into negative territory midway through the morning session Friday, with the Nikkei Stock Average at one point widening its losses to more than 300 points. The benchmark index opened higher in response to Wall Street gains overnight and the yen's depreciation. Investors are also taking a cautious stance ahead of Sunday's upper house election. |

Nikkei Opens Higher On Wall St Gains, Hits 2-Month HighTOKYO (NQN)--Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday in response to overnight gains on Wall Street, with the Nikkei Stock Average climbing 30.21 points to begin the day at 14,645.25. The benchmark index continued higher into the fifth straight trading day. It surpassed 14,638, the recent high recorded on Tuesday, to rise to its highest point since May 24. On Wednesday, U.S. time, Ben Bernanke said during Congressional testimony that it is possible for the central bank to accelerate, to a certain degree, the pace at which it reduces its bond purchases if the economy recovers faster than expected. The investor response to the comment was muted, as it largely echoed his previous comments.   |

Fate of yen hinges on Japan’s weekend elections ....The much-anticipated upper house elections in Japan on Sunday will be pivotal to shaping the fate of the country's currency, which has experienced wild swings in recent months, analysts told CNBC. .... bringing the cross back down to the current 93.7 level. Where the currency pair goes from here, hinges on the outcome of the upper house elections on July 21, analysts say. If Abe's LDP can gain a majority it should give him extra impetus to push his third arrow through. " Sunday's a big day [for the yen]," Robert Rennie, global head of currency strategy at Australia's Westpac bank told CNBC. " Presumably Abe wins the majority in the upper house and that gives him the mandate to move forward with his third arrow," he added. ... According to Westpac's Rennie, the speed at which Abe is able to push through his policy initiatives, which involve raising incomes by 3% annually over the next decade, setting up special economic zones to attract foreign investment and full liberalization of the retail electricity market, will also be important for the currency. ... " If the Japanese stock market responds positively to that [an Abe win], that could be the catalyst to make the dollar-yen finally break back past 100 and make progress towards the 105 area," he said. |

ADB Lowers Asian Growth Rate ForecastMANILA (NQN)--The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Tuesday it cut its forecast growth rate for GDP in developing Asia to 6.3%, down 0.3 point, due to a slowdown in China that is affecting the economies of Southeast Asia. For major industrial economies worldwide, the outlook was raised by 0.1 point, due in part to the effects of Japan's economic stimulus program. Developing Asia refers to the 45 developing-country members of the bank. In its previous outlook in April, the ADB predicted strong consumer spending would underpin overall growth in the region. But the outlook was dimmed by an accelerating downtrend, largely because China's growth rate in the April-June quarter slowed to 7.5%. In China, companies have been slow to increase output and exports have slumped due to slower growth in overseas demand. The ADB warned investment could fall further in China due to problems with the country's shadow banking system. Southeast Asia, meanwhile, is seeing solid domestic demand. But the ADB said these economies are likely to be hurt by the slowdown in China, which is a major trading partner. Changyong Rhee, the bank's chief economist, said the knock-on effects from China's economic slowdown has become a concern for the region. On the other hand, the ADB raised its growth forecast for major industrialized countries to 1.1% on the back of the faster growth likely to flow from Japan's monetary easing. The economic growth forecast for Japan rose 0.6 point to 1.8%, up from the previous outlook for 1.2% growth.   |
