SINGAPORE : Raffles Medical Group has said its full-year net profit rose 35 per cent to about S$32 million. The better showing was led by positive contributions from all its business lines. The Singapore private healthcare provider is optimistic this year, despite the poorer economic situation. The number of foreign patients travelling to Singapore for treatment has been dropping because of the economic slump. But not for Raffles Medical Group, whose foreign patient load rose 20 per cent on-year in 2008. And that partly helped to boost its bottomline by 35 per cent to some S$32 million. But if a fair value gain on an investment property in 2007 was included, the full-year net profit would have fallen 12 per cent instead. Revenue grew 19 per cent on-year to about S$201 million. Raffles Medical Group said the operating environment will be difficult this year, but it remains unfazed. Dr Loo Choon Yong, executive chairman, Raffles Medical Group, said: "In past recessions in 1998 and 2001, we have been able to grow 10 per cent, 11 per cent. So I expect that we should be able to do the same degree of growth, but not like in previous good times when we were growing 25 per cent, 30 per cent per year." Raffles Medical Group said it plans to grow by tapping a diversified market for patients ranging from Southeast Asia to Russia and the Middle East. Dr Loo said: "Now we want to work harder, we want to link up better so that those who can still afford to go overseas for treatment, we want to get more of them. Russia has been a very good source of patients. We want to work deeper into this market and so is Vietnam." And it also plans to use the downturn to position itself for the future. During this downturn, Raffles Medical Group intends to increase its training opportunities for its some 1,000 employees. In addition, it also plans to hire about 100 more staff this year for positions like doctors, nurses and specialists. Raffles Medical has recommended a final dividend of 1.5 cents per share for the full year. - CNA/ms | ||||
