Sometimes people will try all means so that you make that one false move. That is when you must be RESILIENT |

The final message is still the same... As Robert Kiyosaki so deftly puts it... "Bullying is everywhere"... It's an 'eternal truth' to be accepted... |

Hi Elf, Well I have also been in a tough position before with a boss. I nearly could not sleep one time. I just endured, kept my cool and found another job first before leaving. Resilience is one thing. But we spend most of our time in the day at work. I don't think I want to come to work every day "to be resilient". Go somewhere where you look forward to coming to work each day. I guess I am very fortunate to find not only a great company but also one where there is hardly any politics. In all my working life, I have finally found a place where I look forward to coming to work, interacting and working with my colleagues. |

Hi Mani, Don't misunderstand. I didn't contradict or criticize the boss. What I did "wrong" was to rock the boat by suggesting improvements or to the organisation. I find that many Singaporean managers are very comfortable in their roles and don't like change. This is less prevalent in the private sector where bottom line is very important. |

Hi elfie, I sympathise with you. Perhaps your boss feels threatened by you? I am quite an outspoken person. I have had some bosses who felt threatened when I spoke up about certain things. They made life rather miserable for me and made it quite clear that they would rather see me go. So much for "respect for people" and "valuing opinions" ... hahaha.... |

My young (<30yrsold) nephew-in-law was working for A Japanese Electronic Co in Batam/Bintan. His Japanese boss enouraged him to take up golf so that he can plaed with him. He also travelled to many countries to procure materials. After a few yrs, the Japanese boss wanted to promote him back to Spore on the condition that he get rid of the old engineers who were an eyesore of the Japanese boss. He resigned instead of becoming a bad guy. |

hm. yea sporeguy, i do agree about resilience, but then, to what extent, and for what purpose? if realism of bureaucracy crosses the very ideals of why you joined the place? and at the end, at what personal cost, really. is it worth. that's my qn. cos frankly, if i'm left alone to do the work i wanna do, i'd be damn happy. the trouble is always the damn politics that ppl who can't work like to play (and yes, micromanage. >~< you can't micromanage an elf for goodness' sake.) btw, wld like to thank you for recommending the lun yu programme; have caught a few episodes; very educational and enjoyed it a lot. :) |

Hi Elf, Resilence is the key word. After the 1997 financial crisis, a listed spore company retrenched local engineers. A few months later the co employed China & Indian enginneers for half the salary. The 1st batch of retrenched workers were paid compensation, but subsequent "retrenchment" was to make life difficult for the locals until they resigned on their own, no need to pay retrenchment benefit for those who have work more than 10 yrs! Till today, my friend is still in the co. He was very frustrated when they kept on rotating him across various dept every 3 to 6 months. Two yrs ago, another of my friend working in public sector was relieved of his authority by his new boss of certain duty bcos of backstabbing by a colleague. Bcos his conscience is clear, and he believes he is working for the good of the public, he continue to work under the new boss who wants micro-managed every subordinates by avoiding confrontation with her. He will survive! |

hey singaporegal, think, as long as there are ppl around, there will always be politics. so it's simply a matter of finding a crowd that suits you. elfie is perhaps too idealistic for the civil service. still up in the air tho; irony is: the two top directors want to keep me, but my boss is quite happy to see me go. middle mgmt. kaoz. anyhow, have given my terms. don't think the civil service is open enough to accept it, but let's see. would breathe freer outside of it anyhow. haha, taybc, will always trade/invest whether i have a job or not. i live and breathe the markets. it's a matter of balance. if you go long term, or fixed scalps (set prices), you don't quite need to watch all the time. likely not full time trader tho. altho i should like to. kinda like, if i can make one mth's salary in a day, why on earth do i wanna work 10 hrs, dealing with bureaucrats, getting stressed, upset etc for. sigh. but my parents would freak. so ah well. (or perhaps more realistically: just make 500 per day, 40 weeks a year. count 12 weeks as net zero. it is quite possible to do so.) anyone has job openings for an elf? hahaha. sigh. elfie is blue. sigh. |

Hi elfie, Just read that you are resigning! Sigh... I understand the problems and issues when working in the public sector.... people issues, red tape..etc.. I have worked in both private and public sectors. Both have their own sets of problems. Why is working life in Singapore so problematic??! Sometimes I just wish I can just sell my house and car and retire to Thailand / New Zealand / Bali / Canada etc... |

I think it's a better choice to stay sideline. the DOW Futures is not doing anyone good. From before lunch -67 to now -101. HSI now at -1,815, Nikkei -467. All Reds getting more REDS. Run ah...!!!!! |

Idesa: I think I will also stay sideline today, too. Also, you don?t need to worry about the proposal yesteray. Looking at the timing of the posts, it is clear that you were just joking. (I did LOL). Now, it is my turn to put the record straight as it seems the scriptures were taken out of context (my fault). They should have been: (quotation marks deleted in case they become question marks again)
Therefore,
it is clear (from the FIRST scripture) the truth refers to Jesus Christ. I have also formed my own interpretation(and I am no theologian) after some quick readings early this morning: By learning more about God and developing a relationship with him, not only are we reconciled (i.e. the way) with him and forgiven of our wrongs, but we can also be free from deception (i.e. the truth), and be all (i.e. life) that God meant for us to be.
