It has agreed to form a JV company with China's Sichuan Jin Tai Bio-Chem. The venture will have proposed registered capital of 70 mln yuan. Under terms of a deal between the two firm's, Luzhou will take a 51% stake in the jv by investing RMB35.7m while Jin Tai will hold the balance with a RMB34.3m investment. The venture will operate a corn sweetener production plant, starting the second quarter of 2007, which will have annual production capacity of 140,000 tons. "The new plant will enable the group to extend its market reach to cover China's south-western region, including Chengdu and Chongqing," Luzhou said in a release. Luzhou currently operates four production facilities in China, with total production capacity of 650,000 tons per annum. This is set to expand to 940, 000 by the second quarter of 2007 with a new facility in Shandong Province and its new plant in Sichuan province. |

Sugar futures fall near a 1-year low on weak demand. March sugar fell to a low of 11.30 US cents a pound on the New York Board of Trade, the weakest intraday level for the contract since mid-November 2005. It tallied a loss of about 14% for the week. October sugar fell 1.10 US cents, or 9.5%, to close at 10.46 US cents after a low of 10.40, the lowest level the contract has seen since late September of last year.
Lower gasoline and ethanol prices in recent weeks have also taken out support from the sugar market.

It hit above $1 in less than a year after being listed. Whoever was or were responsible for ramping it up could have taken profit by selling down and move away with the profit to try and ramp up another stock. It will take some time for it to hit $1 again unless some other big boys enter to push it up again. Imagine price shooting up from its IPO price of 25 cts to about $1 (as the forecast profit growth has been factored in ) within a short period! |

It rose after DBSV initiated coverage with a "buy" call, citing a jump in the demand for corn sweeteners amid rising sugar cane prices. It has a target price of $1.05 "We are excited about the sweet prospects for Luzhou, as higher cane sugar prices in China and worldwide prompt F&B (food and beverage) players to source for corn sweetener as a cheaper and direct substitute of cane sugar," analysts James Tan and Germaine Khong said in a research note. Cane sugar prices have risen 72% in the past year and 32% since the beginning of the year, the note said. The brokerage firm estimates a full-year net profit of RMB118.2m for Luzhou in the 2006 financial year, up 62.8% from the previous year. Shares in Luzhou are trading at 12x their forecast 2006 earnings, compared with an average of 15x for their peers in Singapore's F&B sector, according to Reuters data. |

Sugar price has been creeping up since Monday while corn price has been declining. This bodes well for Luzhou as its raw material used is corn. Expect Luzhou to report strong results for the next 2 Q at least. |

CIMB-GK said it has initiated coverage with a target price price of $1.00. "We like Luzhou for the sugar substitution play, its sustainable margin and volume growth. Luzhou is a beneficiary of corn syrup as a cost-saving alternative for sugar. Rising sugar cane prices are prompting sugar customers to switch to corn sweeteners," CIMB-GK said in a note to clients. "As Luzhou moves towards higher-grade fructose syrup, the cost saving angle becomes more compelling, as evidenced by its greater customer traction. Average utilisation rate for corn sweeteners is estimated to rise to 80-94% for FY2007-2008, reflecting forecast topline growth of 30% in 2007," it said. |

It is widely believed that as oil prices shot up, sugar cane-producing countries found it more lucrative to use their harvests to produce ethanol fuel, resulting in a worldwide sugar shortage. There's also unfavourable weather in some sugar cane-producing countries. Between 1997 and the middle of last year, white sugar was traded between US$160 and US$300 a tonne. But in Jul, the price soared to US$500 a tonne, about a 15-year high. Prices are likely to stay high for the next 2 years. There could be an increasing demand for corn sweeteners as a substitute for sugar. |
