What Does Market Maker Mean?
A broker-dealer firm that accepts the risk of holding a certain number of shares of a particular security in order to facilitate trading in that security. Each market maker competes for customer order flow by displaying buy and sell quotations for a guaranteed number of shares. Once an order is received, the market maker immediately sells from its own inventory or seeks an offsetting order. This process takes place in mere seconds.
Investopedia explains Market Maker
The Nasdaq is the prime example of an operation of market makers. There are more than 500 member firms that act as Nasdaq market makers, keeping the financial markets running efficiently because they are willing to quote both bid and offer prices for an asset.

I see what you mean... As prices drop, you can bet your bottom dollar that there are many people who will find it 'cheap' to buy, and they buy and buy, all the way down. As for big price falls, sometimes there's a gap where no selling/buying takes place. In that case, the money simply literally vanish. It was the money of those holding the stocks...

I still dont get it. Why would anyone want to buy knowing that they can get a lower px? Take for example, yesterday, after govt announced property cooling measures, sure will affect property stocks like capitaland. BT mentioned he shorted capitaland at pre-opening. Someone must have bought from him in order for him to short. But who???

For Noble, more a signal to take profit than to short I would say, given the recent bullish news in the press. Good luck!

BT, thanks for the heads up. Just had a look at Noble's charts, I for one will not be shorting noble come Mon because don't see much mileage from it. The similar candlestick pattern also happened in late Sep when Noble brokeout to new price range, there was 3 black candle formation at peak (as it appeared without next day candle) but it turned out to be consolidation and the bull side trended for a couple days and continued its runup at relatively high stoch & RSI levels above 70%. Just in case history repeats itself. One has to be careful when shorting a bullish counter. Unless one has trailing stop loss feature (to help lockin profit) and stop limit feature on your platform setup, otherwise it is technically & emotionally very ineffective to execute trade order manually even if one is able to keep watch by the monitor screen (which actually does nothing to affect price actions). I believe more than half the folks here do not have access to an advance trading platform. Daniel for k17 as we can all tell by now, is a no go for a long position near term.

By the way just for sharing, Noble looks like it has formed a peak pattern with 3 black candles at the top. So just take note. Many people sent emails asking how to know whether it is time to take profit or not. For long positions, it is important to identify peak patterns, either from standard 6 indicators (RSI, MACD, Stochastics, etc), or candlestick analysis or breakout (breakdown) patterns or fibonanci or a combination of all. For short positions, peak patterns are good entry points. Have a nice weekend |

The long term investors are like 一战定江山.Most likely ,they love fishing too because they are very patient and normally this type of investors are also very rich too because they can afford to wait for the market to make money for them as they have other income from their other investment like properties/forex/business n etc. They will hold the stock for a very long time or forever and transfer it to their family if situation permits. The short term investors are like 速战速决.Because they cant afford to wait as they want to make quick bucks from the market and with limited capital, buy n hold strategy will not work too well for them. |

As for your question, the answer to it is already in my last reply, namely that people are prone to buy at high prices... They are not stupid, but they are just 'gian-gian' (enthusiastic, excited) to make money when stocks are going up... |

First and foremost, I don't like shorting more than I like longing. In fact, in the stock market, everything else being equal, buying stocks at a low price is definitely a safer bet than selling. Thus, newbies must never, never 'suka-suka' play shorting before they even know how to make money by buying stocks.. You can ask around all your stock friends who have done that and I am sure many of them will tell you they lost money by playing shorting (ie. sell before buying). But usually the reason they start playing shorting is that they have lost a lot of money by buying stocks. And I would say that is their biggest mistake of all, because shorting is not for anyone who hasn't made money by buying. It is like trying to ride a motor cycle even before one knows how to ride a bicycle...
