If you follow the CPO futures market, the palm oil stock counters tend to track the cpo prices in the futures market. There was a sell-off from Monday to Wednesday in the CPO futures market last week, rebounded on Thursday following the bullish news from USDA. Downside is very limited now, so lets see what happens on Monday. The risk factor is the hiking of bank reserves in China, which is a big consumer of crude palm oil. For now, the plan is simply to take profit before GAR 4th quarter annoucement in Feb.

Long term wise, its a positive, especially the acquisition of the noodle-making company in China. It will be a new source of revenue for GAR. Come Monday we will see how the market reacts to the news. We just react accordingly to how the market moves from there.

Got an email asking this question : How much can you make from a few cents movement? To give an idea : I had 100 lots of Noble at $2.08 which I sold at $2.28. You know the Math. So it really depends on the volume. A few cents movement is all you need, the important thing is to get the direction right. What matters most is how much you lose when you are wrong (whether you are discipline enough with your cut-loss), and how much you make when you are right. This alone will make you a successful trader. |

A quick update of the likely announcement dates : Noble - 28th Feb GAR - 25th Feb GenSp - 19th Feb It may be prudent to sell-off your holdings before the announcement dates. Unless you are confident of a earnings surprise.

1. Singapore Week AheadSingapore stock market retreated a little for the second week of the year. Straits Times Index (STI) had its first weekly drop in three.
For the first half of the week STI was weak. Investors were cautious and attention centred on the response and yield of Portugal sovereign bond auction. European Central Bank purchased part of the bond and helped stabilized the confidence of Portugal bond for the time being. US market direction was stable for most of the week even though this is the first week of the result season. Hence STI was able to recover some of the losses by the end of the week.
There were two major surprises this Friday. Before market opened this Friday, government announced stringent property cooling measures. Among them, investors that sold their residential property within one year of purchase need to pay seller’s stamp duty of 16% of the property price. As such property and banking stocks were negatively affected. After market close, China announced an increase in bank reserve ratio for the fourth time in two months, lifting the reserve ratio by fifty basis points. China and Hong Kong market are likely to be dragged down by this news when market opens next Monday. Singapore market should also be affected to a lesser extent.
In short, market direction next week or two maybe uncertain. It may be prudent for investors to stay sideline. |

Ok just a quick reply for the various emails about the stocks I have recommended over the past 2 months. Since November I have recommended buying to commodities and gaming. At the start of the recommendation in November : Recommended a buy for GentingSp at $2.06 : current price $2.20 Recommended a buy for Noble at at $2.08 : current price $2.34 Recommended a buy for GAR at $0.74 : current price $0.77 Not bad for a holding period of just 2 months. If you cannot wait anymore and want to take profit, nobody is stopping you. Thanks for all the emails, glad that you guys made profits. This is just the beginning of the year, so there will be many more opportunities ahead. |

HARRY'S HOLDINGS LTD. HOW MUCH ?? ?? AND WHEN !!!! !!!!!! SINGAPORE: Homegrown pubs and restaurants operator Harry's Holdings plans to raise S$5.28 million through an initial public offering (IPO) for a listing on Singapore Exchange's Catalist board. Harry's is offering 24 million shares at 22 cents each, with all shares to be placed out to investors. The company said the 24 million new shares represents about 25.3 per cent of the group's post-placement share capital of 95 million shares. And at 22 cents a share, the shares offering is priced at a historical price earnings ratio of 7.8 times, based on the group's net earnings per share of 2.82 cents for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009. From a single bar opened in Boat Quay in 1992, Harry's currently owns and operates a chain of more than 30 lifestyle bars. The company said it plans to use about S$1.5 million of the IPO proceeds to expand its brand presence in Singapore and overseas by opening new establishments by direct investments or joint ventures. It also plans to use another S$250,000 to establish distribution channels for Harry's beer by appointing distributors and offering it for sale in select local supermarkets. The remaining proceeds will be used for the group's working capital requirements. Listing and trading of the company's shares is expected to start on January 26. -CNA/wk CGX BBs |

A market maker makes money by buying stock at a lower price than the price at which they sell it, or selling the stock at a higher price than they buy it back. Ordinarily they can make money in both rising or falling markets, by taking advantage of the difference between "bid" and "offer" prices. Stock market makers also receive liquidity rebates from electronic communication networks for each share that is sold to or purchased from each posted bid or offer. Conversely, a trader who takes liquidity from a bid or offer posted on an ECN is charged a fee for removing that liquidity. | ||||
