There's a chance of topping out... be cautious. The Chaikin oscillator has turned downwards. |

SMRT Corporation - Rough roads ahead -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nurwidya Abdul, 24 Apr 2007 SMRT Corporation says it expects ridership, rental and advertising revenue in Q1 2008 to improve. However, operating costs is also expected to increase due to repairs and maintenances, more electric costs and 1.5% increase in employees' CPF. It also mentioned added that the gst hike in July will impact its fare revenue. FY 2007 revenue was up 4.4% to S$743.1mln, thanks to its operations in buses, trains, LRTs and gain from advertising. Its taxi opearations was down 14.1% to S$68.1 mln, due to a smaller number of taxi being hired out, on top of its lower rental rates. Net profit was up 31% to S$135.8 mln, thanks to higher operating profits, lower taxes and sale of its investments. Its business generated S$200.9 mln in cash from operations, compared to the S$159.5 mln last year. It says it will be paying a final dividend of 5.75 cents per share, compared to last year's 5.5 cents per share. |

I think ComfortDelgro should takeover the taxi operation as they are doing a much better job there. Better call center service and they are also the first few operators who launch the automatic driven sedan taxi too. SMRT just focus on the MRT and LRT. |

On the other hand, it is also not good for ComfortDelgro to have a complete takeover because it means they will monopolize the public transport system. The commuters will eventually end up as the loosers because in either way, be they an increase in fares or a cut in service, the ball will always be in their court. The option to run separately for the train and bus operations is a good proposal, but it may eventually be advantageous to SMRT because of further expansion plans for the rail business in Singapore, whereas the bus operations are already quite saturated. |

Though SMRT's Q4 profit was up 80.3% on lower taxes, i personally thinks Ms Saw has a up hill task of taking SMRT business overseas and how to increase its taxi rental. Her only success story is on the development of commerical retails outlets at all MRT stations. However take a look at ComfortDelgro, who is already a big brother in the local taxi industry and is already reaping profits from their overseas operation. And i agree with Mr. Lim of ComfortDelgro that size do matters. There is no comparison at all. |

It does make sense for the 2 transport companies to run as one as Singapore is such a small citystate country. However Ms Saw work very hard the past years to bring SMRT to what it is today and she has to hand over the baby in a silver platter with both hands to the bigger ComfortDelgro. Well, that is the rule of the game. She was not right to say "why fix somethiing that is not broken", but if there is no progress in changes for this high demanding society, SMRT will loose out. We have to keep pace. Both Saw and Lim are not the real boss to the company, the government is. My take is that it will go through at the end of the year. |

It's very obvious that she will be the first one to shoot down the merger plans because her career with SMRT is at stake should there be 1. Furthermore, ComfortDelgro is the larger entity compared to SMRT. |

CEO Saw Phaik Hwa shot down calls to restructure local public transport, a report in the Today newspaper said on Wednesday. The paper quoted Saw as saying that the public transport system was already "very good" and that she saw no need for a merger with ComfortDelgro "Why fix something that ain't broke," the paper quoted Saw as saying at the group's 2006 results briefing. |

SMRT rose, fuelled by continued market speculation that ComfortDelGromight take over the metro operator. The Straits Times said last Friday ComfortDelGro's chairman Lim Jit Poh had made a "formal proposal to the government on restructuring the public transport industry". The paper said Lim had suggested 2 options: a mega-merger with rival SMRT to create a single public transport group, or have one operator run the buses and other, trains. |

For any newbees, don't go into share market yet. Wait for opportunities, after a major correction. Then SMRT may be a defensive stock at $1.15 |

Anyone taking the mrt to places would not have failed to notice that SMRT is converting more spaces in MRT stations into retail shops or offices, to cash in on the property market rental incomes. Cld contribute to long term yield for the counter. |

I am no good with TA, but I will not apply TA to this counter if I am an expert because this counter is experiencing now entering into new historical high, that it may not follow what the history had told us in the charts. Besides, this counter have a M&A story behind...with the torotise and, also possible joint venture to have the rail runs into Malaysia. Who will know what is in the pipeline |
