BRUSSELS: Continental Europe's richest nations offered some resolve late Monday to boost bailout funding for weaker states, vowing to "respect" commitments on loan guarantees in exchange for "comprehensive" reforms. Finance ministers from the 17 eurozone countries achieved a "very high level of convergence" on how to shield debt-laden member states such as Portugal or Spain, with only "slight differences, nothing dramatic," according to Eurogroup chief and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker. The "political consensus," in the words of a key EU source, came after the six eurozone states that enjoy Triple-A status with influential international credit rating agencies met in separate talks in Brussels. In their first meeting of 2011, after signing up to rescues worth almost 200 billion euros last year for Greece and Ireland, finance ministers were under pressure to spell out how to overhaul a 440-billion-euro contribution to a safety fund for struggling nations. The 440 billion is part of a 750-billion-euro international safety net to meet fresh cries for help. The 17-nation eurogroup is seeking long-lasting plans to protect the euro currency and the EU economy when a permanent rescue mechanism comes into being on January 1, 2013. "It is obvious that the decision taken last May which anticipates member states making 440 billion euros available will be maintained," said Juncker. Experts are studying how to do that: until now, it was said that some 200 billion of these guarantees had to be kept in reserve as a buffer in order to borrow money at low rates for subsequent lending to countries in trouble. That meant that the rescue fund in effect totalled 250 billion euros. "We made commitments in May, these commitments will be respected," Juncker said, "making available the funds we promised." "We are looking into the different instruments we can press into service in order to do that." Juncker said the six Triple-A states -- Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands -- had a "very friendly informal discussion," that "didn't lead to any splits within the Eurogroup on the actions to take." A diplomat said the six -- who shoulder 61 per cent of the burden based on size and per capita wealth -- would put up more guarantees, based on their being able to borrow at lower interest rates. An EU source said this would be part of a "comprehensive package" including policies for fiscal consolidation, growth, economic reform and stricter application of deficit and debt ceilings hammered out in a "determination" to make current resources work better, rather than pump more money in. While European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso has called for a quick decision amid calls for the EU to double the size of its backstop resources, Juncker refused to be drawn on dates although he admitted there was "a certain urgency." Finnish EU economic and financial affairs commissioner Olli Rehn said the goal was to ensure "that so-called market forces cannot have even the slightest doubt about our capacity to act." Lending capacity "should be reinforced" to "make 2011 the year when Europe overcame the financial crisis and lifted its growth potential." Germany, the fund's main guarantor, had said beforehand there was "no urgent need to make a decision," according to Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, after market pressure last week eased on Portugal and Spain. The eurozone's 440-billion-euro European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) is topped up by 250 billion euros from the IMF and another 60 billion euros from the 27-nation EU. -AFP/ac | ||||

lol that is only if they dont diversify. the only thing that can kill a diversified portfolio is depression. right? i mean if you got 10 counters, you limit yourself to 1/10 of your portfolio. the diversifying away unsystematic risk would limit yourself.

On the contary... this is not 'gey gao' (silly notion)... Long-term bettors (investors) can and do have nail-biting moments, and sleepless nights too, depending on how much they have at stake. This is obvious, because if much, the risk is real...

not really, you should be more ghey gao over short term prices rather than long term. cuz in the long term, the abit extra u pay is insignificant compared to when u short term player. anyway once I close my wilmar position I will stop playing short term liao. too many sleepless nights.

Hang on there....wait to maximise profit for Sem Marine & GAR this week or next. If you have set a stop loss (usual -3% to -5%), it is wise to set a re-entry px which is lower than the stop loss px as well. Otherwise, may miss big time when trend reverses. Cheers!
