MediaRing's new soft phone to push earnings The bulk of MediaRing's revenue will continue to come from it traditional call shops in the Middle East, Indochina and other parts of the world - CEO Khaw Kheng Joo. "...Market talk has it that Singapore Telecommunications now want a slice of MediaRing. MediaRing's CEO Khaw Kheng Joo is reluctant to talk about what will happen to PacNet or whether MediaRing will sell its stake to Asia Netcom. He is, however, excited about the company's new service called MediaRing Talk that works exactly like Skype - it allows users to make phone call from their PC or lap-top using an Internet Connection. Like Skype, MediaRing Talk will allow users to make free calls from one PC to another, but will charge a small fee for outgoing and incoming calls from a fixed or mobile phone. The new service will hopefully help diversify MediaRing's existing earning base At present, over 90% of its revenue comes from retail sales of PC-to-phone call services. MediaRing has a large network of call shops aroung the world, particularly in the Middle East and Indonesia. Patrons of these shops pay a relatively low fee, in comparison to calls from a fixed line or mobile line in their home countries, to call overseas using MediaRing's VoIP service network. While this core business has provided revenue in the physical realm, MediaRing is hoping to take its VoIP business online as well and has adopted a business model almost similar to that of Skype. Skype Woe "We've actually had a lot of requests from companies to [offer what Skype is offering]," says CEO Khaw. "The main probem with Skype is that it is proprietary software, so many IT department heads are reluctant to allow it on their networks." If you install propriety software, you are at the mercy of the developer and have no say on charges, upgrade and services. Khaw adds that Skype works on peer-to-peer (P2P) technology and employs supernodes to make connections. This means that if the program canot establish a direct connection between one user and another, it uses another computer on the network to make that connection. This, of course, slows down the computing speed and Internet connection of that computer. But the user of that computer cannot stop his machine from being used as a supernode. While these issues are of little concern to the individual user, they have prevented corporations from benefitting from what could lower communication costs substantially. While individual consumers tend to make fewer overseas calls, businesses make up a large portion of overseas call traffic and a cheaper and reliable solution has the potential to translate into huge saving. Business opptunity Khaw says MediaRing Talk has addressed these issues and the company has already implemented a campus-wide communications solution for its first client Republic Polytechnic in Singapore. To facillitate VoIP communication , the entire campus has been equipped with wireless connectivity and all staff with wireless-ready laptops. Each employee has his or her own local phone number that begin with a "3" instead of a "6" like most land-line number in Singapore; and all laptops have a customised version of the MediaRing Talk software. The software has the Republic Polytechnic logo at the bottom and comes with an in-built list of all employees and their respective phone numberrs. It also sync with Microsoft Outlook and can forward calls to personal mobile or home phone numbers when the computer is turn off. Being able to offer a full-service telphone system-instead of just international phone calls through VoIP - may give MediRing a new lease of life as it now has the potential to operate as a true blue telco. In 2005, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) awarded MediaRing a licence to issue prefix-3 phone numbers. "While VoIP users are currently able to make outgoing calls direct from their PC's to traditional phone numbers, receiving incoming calls [from traditional phones] is an issue as it requireds the VoIP service to be tied to a phone number," Khaw explains. "MediaRing's fully interconnected prefixed-3 service solves this quandary. By mapping the VoIP service onto our prefix-3 eight digit phone number, customers can make and receive VoIP calls to and from anywhere in the world on the same numbers." Being able to offer an actual phone number means MediaRing can eventually be considered by consumers as an alternative to SingTel fixed-line subscription, which may explain the latter's rumoured buying interest. And being able to offer the service to corporate clients will lock in revenue for the company: The Republic Polytechnic contract is for five years. Khaw is not discounting the retail consumers, either, "Revenue will come both from [the retail and corporate] segments, he says. He expects retail consumers to eventually catch on the idea of making phone calls from a PC to a mobile or fixed line at a far lower rate. Already , Skype's PC-to-phone service Skype-Out has transformed it from a free VoIP service into a company that generated net revenues of US$66 million (S$101.28 million) in the fourth quarter last year. ..To expand on this call shop revenues model, the company (MEdiaRing) is working on ventures in Latin Americam where, Khaw says the Hispanic market hold great potential. DBS Vickers analyst Sachin Mittal, the only one who covers the Singapore Exchange-listed stock, is optimistic about MediaRing's prospect, given the lowering of call termination charges in developing countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as high international direct dial charges in the Middle East, where MediaRing's presence is strong, Mittal also expects Latin American markets to begin contributing to revenue by the middle of this year. The company is due to announce its full year result for FY2006 within the next few weeks and so far, indications have been quite positive, For the six months of FY 2006 ended June 30, net profit was up 182% year-on-year to US$3.4 million, so investors could well be hoping for yet another positive report.
