Recent studies also suggest Japan continues to significantly
underestimate the scale of the disaster which could have health and
safety implications far into the future.....??
All told, decommissioning the plant will likely take 40 years.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-24/threat-to-japanese-food-chain-multiplies-as-cesium-contamination-spreads.html
Radiation fallout from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant poses a growing threat to Japan’s food chain as unsafe levels of cesium found in beef on supermarket shelves were also detected in more vegetables and in the ocean. Seafood Concerns - “Some areas still have high radiation dosages and if eaten products from these areas, you’ll get a considerable amt of radiation,” said Sentaro Takahashi, a prof of radiation control at Kyoto Uni in western Japan.

AFP | Fri Mar 1 2013. US teen designs compact nuclear reactor Fuel is in the form of molten salt,  and reactors don't need to be pressurized, according to the teenager. LONG BEACH - Thursday - TED Conference Southern California. 18 year-old Taylor Wilson has designed a compact nuclear reactor that could one day burn waste from old atomic weapons to power anything from homes and factories to space colonies.
The American teen, who gained fame four years ago after designing a fusion reactor build in the garage of his family's home, shared his latest endeavour. " It's about bringing something old, fission, into the 21st Century." He has designed a small reactor capable of generating 50-100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power  up to  100,000 homes. The reactor can be made assembly-line style and powered by molten radioactive material from nuclear weapons, Wilson said. The relatively small, modular reactor can be shipped sealed with enough fuel to last for 30 years. " You can plop them down anywhere in the world and they work, buried under the ground for security reasons," he said, while detailing his design at TED. " In the Cold War we built up this huge arsenal of nuclear weapons and we don't need them anymore," Wilson said. " It would be great if we could eat them up, and this reactor loves this stuff." His reactors are designed to spin turbines using gas instead of steam, meaning they operate at temperatures lower than those of typical nuclear reactors and don't spew anything if there is a breach. " In event of an accident, you can just drain the core into a tank under the reactor with neutron absorbers and the reaction stops," Wilson said. " There is no inclination for the fission products to leave this reactor," he said. " In an accident, the reactor may be toast, which is sorry for the power company." Wilson, who graduated in May, said he is putting off university to focus on a company he created to make Modular Fission Reactors and planned to have a prototype ready in  2 years and a product to market in  5 years. He see his competition as a nations, particularly China, and the roadblocks ahead as political instead of technical. " Imagine having a compact reactor in a rocket designed by those planning to habitat other planets. Not only would you have power for propulsion, but power once you get there." " Not only does it combat climate change, it can bring power to the developing world," Wilson said with teenage optimism. |

SEATTLE (Friday-Reuters) - Six underground storage tanks at Hanford Nuclear Reservation along the Columbia river. Washington
state were recently found tobe leaking radioactive waste, but there is
no immediate risk to human health. The seeping waste adds to decades of soil contamination caused by leaking storage tanks at Hanford in the past and threatens under ground water to the Columbia river). OLD NEWS-JAPAN Leak of highly radioactive water had been discovered and radiation of more than 7.5 million times the legal limit was found in the sea near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, prompting fears about seafood safety. Enormous readings like these compelled the Japanese govt to set up its first ever radiation safety standards for fish. It's already known that some fish caught off Japan would have exceeded the new limit. Fishermen pessimistic...........:( |

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/worlds-biggest-nuke-plant-may-shut-japan-report-081846423--finance.html Friday - The largest nuclear power plant in the world may be
forced to shut down under tightened rules proposed by Japan's new
nuclear watchdog aimed at safeguarding against earthquakes. Fukushima operator Tokyo Electric Power's vast Kashiwazaki-Kariwa
plant in central Japan could be on the chopping block if the Nuclear
Regulation Authority expands the definition of an active fault.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1248807/1/.html Record high radiation found in Fukushima fish: TEPCO...Fish contaminated with radiation levels more than 2,500 times the legal limit has been caught near Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, its operator said on Friday. Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said caesium equivalent to 254,000 becquerels per kilogramme -- or 2,540 times more than the government seafood limit -- was detected in a " murasoi" fish. The fish, similar to rockfish, was caught at a port inside the Fukushima plant, a TEPCO spokesman said. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was battered by a towering tsunami following a huge earthquake on March 11, 2011, causing reactor meltdowns which spewed radioactive contamination into the atmosphere. Fishing around Fukushima was halted and the govt banned beef, milk, mushrooms and vegetables from being produced in surrounding areas.

Lynas plans to dilute the radioactive waste, declassify it from being labelled as radioactive and dispose of it as commercial items. Irresponsible...
To date the Ministries that are responsible for Lynas has been increased to four Ministries. Refer Joint statement of the four ministries on the 22nd February 2012.
It finally has dawned upon the Najib’s administration that the hazards regarding LAMP is multifaceted in nature and dealing with LAMP requires multi-disciplinary intervention. However the presence of the various Ministers and Ministries does not add to the efficiency in managing LAMP.
Day after day the public continue to be fed with alarming and contradictory statements regarding LAMP’s safety. The various Ministers as well as the regulatory body, AELB can’t even seem to agree on the contents or the radioactivity of the waste. They even fall into the trap set by Lynas to label Lynas’ waste as ‘residue’ instead of ‘hazardous and radioactive waste’

Australian miner Lynas in eastern Malaysia Kuantan, Pahang  could curtail China's monopoly on the supply of rare earths for making high-tech goods. Was just  wondering. Lynas is starting their operation, blessing from ruling Authority. Hide it in under ground  for next  30yr to come  - in no man land, waste one whole  mountian??. where rain will drop there to wash away - hopefully n  slip into under water and so on. How were they going to dispose off their toxic waste or let nature run it course?.  |
