Its quarterly net profit fell 86%, due to lower sales at its engineering and construction business. The firm also said weaker performance from its municipal water treatment operations in Singapore and the Middle East as well as higher development costs from its expansion into new markets had eroded its earnings. Hyflux earned just $1.9 million in the three months ended September, compared with $13.6 million in the year-ago period. Hyflux Chief Executive Officer Olivia Lum said the company had made good progress beyond its traditional markets of China and Singapore. "The group remains optimistic about the macro environment on the water, waste-water and used-oil recovery sectors in China, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East," she said in a statement. China accounted for 71% of group sales in the first nine months of the year with Singapore generating 19%. Lum said Hyflux's 80% stake in China water treatment firm SinoSpring would generate 25-30 years of recurring revenue of about $160-$170 million. Hyflux's order book stood at $454 million at the end of September, a 198% surge from the first six months this year. The firm, whose market value is about US$900 million, competes with General Electric Co., Siemens AG and Zenon Environmental Inc. in the global water treatment market. It also vies with smaller Singapore-listed rivals Sinomem Technology, Bio-Treat Technology and United Envirotech. A former market darling, Hyflux saw its stock soar from around $1 in mid-2004 to nearly $4 in mid-2005, but then plunged back to just above $2 in mid-2006. The stock trades at a relatively high forward PER of 39x, higher than the Asia-Pacific sector average of 26x. On Friday, the company announced the resignation of its deputy chief executive Lim Kim Seng, without giving a reason. Analysts say the water treatment industry's growth potential is underscored by United Nations data showing that 785 million people in Asia's developing regions lack regular access to safe water. |

It has invested an additional US$25 mln in associate company SinoSpring Utility Ltd, raising its stake in the company to 80% from 50% previously. " It is the company's objective to build on long-term recurring income and SinoSpring remains focused in developing suitable projects in China," Hyflux group CEO and president Olivia Lum said. SinoSpring currently has 13 projects in China, with a combined capacity of 540,000 cubic meters of water per day. The projects are expected to generate annual revenues of $160-170 mln over contract periods of between 25 and 30 years. Upon completion, the projects are estimated to be worth $400 mln, Hyflux said. |

UBS has upgraded its rating to "neutral 2" from "reduce 2" and increased its target price to $2.70 from $2.30 after the company announced it won a contract in Algeria. Hyflux has a 10.2% stake in a consortium that won a US$205 mln, 25-year contract to build and operate a seawater desalination plant in Algeria. More importantly, UBS said a subsidiary of Hyflux will undertake all the engineering, procurement, and construction work for the project, which it estimates is worth $328 mln. "The project will probably commence in mid-2007 and revenue recognition is likely to be in 2008 and 2009. "We estimate it would amount to an additional $20 mln in earnings in those years," UBS said in a client note. "We revise up our EPS estimate for 2008 from $0.15 to $0.19." UBS expects Hyflux's net profit to grow to $38 mln this year from $21 mln last year, then to $56 mln in 2007, and to $98 mln in 2008. |

I believe the price rose when Hyflux was discussing the following project which they won. Spring Utility Ltd, its wholly owned subsidiary, and Malakoff international Ltd(the Consortium) secured a US$205m EPC contract to design and build a 200,000 cubic metres/day desalination plant in Algeria for a period of 25 years. It is the largest seawater desalination plant for Hyflux and marks a significant breakthrough by craeting footprint for them in the MENA region (Middle Eastern Northern Africa). The Project is estimated to be completed within 24 months from financial close. |

Its associate Hyflux Utility has won $30m worth of water treatment and recycling contracts in China under a 25-year concession from the local government of Langfang City in Hebei Province. Under the concession, Hyflux Utility has exclusive rights to operate an 80 MLD (mln litres per day) waste water treatment plant and a water recycling plant over a 25-year period. It will also undertake the design, engineering and construction of the water recycling plant, which is expected to be completed next year. Hyflux Utility is a wholly owned unit of Sinospring Utility Ltd, which is 50%-owned by Hyflux. |
