I believe TA and FA can complement each other. Each has its own strengths and weakness. Up to end-user to study and understand these pros and cons, then decide what to use. No 'one-size' fits all. FA provides first cut qualitative filtering of the company to invest in. Then again, FA can be good... but if no big player is interested in the company... then... price can be really stagnant for yrs. TA provides the quantitative measurement of price action, trend, volume, market interest etc i.e. to see if stock is worth trading/liquid enough. Of course, TA can be good... but if the company sucks in terms of FA (e.g. -ve cashflow for yrs, lousy commercial prospects, excessively heavy debt - to - asset ratio etc, very screwed management performance)... it can be suicidal to buy/punt. Combining both can help to optimise one's investment performance.

Da jie Singaporegal is perfectly correct... :) Even when a stock in a downtrend has fallen gradually to 80%, 60%, 50% or even 30% (!) of his purchase price, a person in love with his stock will swear by the fundamentals (ie. superb management, great value, etc)... What he doesn't realise is that he is actually made "pok" by his erroneous attitude in the face of a downtrending market... |

That's true.... but remember what happened to China Aviation Oil? The CEO had high reputation and was featured a few times in the papers. And Maddoff? Do not stake everything on the reputation of the management. Take everything with a pinch of salt.

Since all the factors, known as well as unknown, (as well as the unknowable fundamentals) are reflected in the price chart... Doesn't that make all academic researchers all "pok" in a prolonged downtrend if they stay put stubbornly? Preservation of capital is the first (#1) rule in the stock market, not being "pok"...

TA is for those who are too uneducated, illiterate and lazy to read accounting statements or think independently. This is all I can say of TA "chartists". | ||||

Buy a good FA stock. I look at FA , more than TA. Stock with good FA if stuck, will go up back again. If buy a stock based on TA, n its FA is not good. Than GOD bless U. Cheers. |

I use primarily TA but you're right... TA doesn't work when the volumes dry up.

I don't waste any time on ordinary time-consuming "TA". There's really nothing 'technical' in it. TA as we know it (ie. with volume, rsi, macd, ma, bollingers etc) is only good when no one knows a thing about 'TA'... To me, price pattern is sufficient as a decision-making tool for a bet. And because stock market speculation is nothing but betting on tomorrow's price action... |

One must never be angry when people call you a goondoo... In fact if you have been a goondoo, you must not be shy to call yourself that too. As long as it is said in good (benevolent) spirit, you should learn something from it... |

Chart reading ( I don't understand what's 'TA') applies to all counters... But it's best to avoid very thinly touched counters... But when the going gets gets rough, either bullishly or bearishly, some goondoo may sell or buy from you... |

I only enter for one sole reason... Want to know what? But you must first pay for it... Just kidding la... The only reason I enter a position is when I see a beautifully formed floor on the chart... or when the chart suggests it to be a major support or resistance... Yes, it's the chart, the chart and nothing else... Because all there is to know, everything, all 'fundamentals' are shown in the chart... hehehe... |

Is it due to 1) Market news 2) Market Darling 3) Industry 4) Financials (Cash, Debt level, EPS, PE) 5) Purely TA (Meaning loss-making company also ok if TA warrants an entry) 6) Sentimental reasons 7) Management/Major Investors 8) Gut Feel / Any other reasons? |
