I do not like to average down; but for stocks like NOL which is associated with Temasek Holding, I dare. I adopted the same strategy for Sembcorp when it was affected by the Solitaire case. It also brings to mind when SingTel bought over another company for $10 billion dollars and its shares dropped to about $1.20. The bureaucrats in the GLCs would somehow do something to improve the stock price, especially where member of the Lee family is involved. Maybe reputation is at stake. But this strategy requires deep pocket and maybe many years of patience. Some say that it is throwing good money to chase after bad money. Ultimately I believe that it depends on individual's conviction which strategy to adopt. Anyway one can never be 100% convicted and totally comfortable when stock market is involved. Maybe that the fun of the stock market. |

NOL is heading into a cyclical downturn. Rates in several key trade routes have softened, with Asia-Europe rates declining 7% yoy and Asia/Middle East down 5% yoy. The concerns remains that newbuild capacity supply will outstrip demand, which would put more pressure on the global freight environment. The earnings downtrend should gain traction with effect from 2Q06 on the back of weaker freight trends in Asia-Europe and Transpacific trade lanes. Based on this outlook and compounded by high fuel prices, 2H06 is expected to be loss-making for NOL. Prices have fallen significantly due to the weak sentiment in the market. The market has not fully priced in the full effects of the potentially lower 2006/07 freight contracts on the Transpacific routes - evidence of this could surface only in NOL's monthly reporting of freight rates from the June period onwards. Kim Eng has reduced its target price to $1.34, based on trough valuations in a cyclical downturn of 0.6x price to book. |

The price rebounded because the local media raised the possibility of a NOL/PSA merger again as the reason for David Lim to step down. It also said that rumour of him quitting upon expiring of his contract in Jul '06 has been circulating for a while. Investors seem to like the clarification that David Lim left by "mutual consent". But we need to ask some questions. If the rumour has been in circulation for some time, why is the columnist still surpised with the departure? If David was to re-emerge to head the merged NOL/PSA entity, there would seem to be no need do a global search for a new CEO for NOL, especially at such as time of uncertainty and speculation? Why would anyone worth his salt in the shipping industry, especially a foreigner be willing to come on board after the unhappy depature of David's predecessor, Flemming Jacob? David has been credited with turning NOL around after Flemming departure. So David's departure is like not to blemish his record, with the cyclical downturn in the shipping industry. |

Yesterday and today's price rises for NOL are more likely due to SGX buying in for naked short sellers who failed to cover up at the close of business on Tuesday and Wednesday. There are "daredevils" who refuse to cover up at the close of business, hoping that the following day after they had short sold would be a "down" market. |

The stock market is very fickle. Every time there is news or rumours, stock prices go up and down, especially when there is a change of CEO. NOL peaked in early March 2005 ($4.20) and has been on downtrend since. Whether it is his fault or oil price (which is beyond his control), the CEO is held responsible. Market watchers perhaps feel that it is good that the CEO will be replaced and reacted positively, driving up the price. Sheer bad luck or blessing in disguise - we wish David Lim all the best in his new endeavours. |

Ther R two possible reason, one to catch shortise and at the same time testing by big boys, today did a very good test by buy up one lot at a time. The other one is don forget Termasek have very big interest in NOL, so don play play too much with the big boys, they mean business. |

NOL has been rising these past 2 days, bucking the STI down trend. With the change in CEO and cyclical downturn, NOL's biz cld be affected. Anyone has any idea why NOL is going up? |
