Thai protesters surround telecoms firms



BANGKOK: Thai opposition protesters marched on key  state communications targets on Saturday after vowing a final push to topple the government, as the capital braces for mass rival rallies.

Several thousand anti-government protesters were scattered across five bases in the capital on Saturday, according to city police.

The turnout is expected to spike over the weekend as organisers seek a final push ahead of celebrations for revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej's birthday on December 5, which is traditionally marked in an atmosphere of calm and respect.

They have declared Sunday a " day of victory" , with plans to gather near the heavily guarded Government House, besiege more important buildings -- even Bangkok's zoo -- and to tighten their blockade of government ministries.


Protesters on Saturday began surrounding offices of Telephone Organisation of Thailand (TOT) and Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT), two key state telecoms firms. 

" We will control the area, like we did at the finance ministry, and ask staff not to work. So on Monday everything will shut down," rally spokesman Akanat Promphan told AFP.

The Information and Communications Technology Ministry insisted that back-up systems were in place and communications in Thailand would not be affected.

THAILAND's economy, South-east Asia's second largest, typically shows remarkable resilience to political turbulence, but there are factors this time around that suggest the ongoing unrest could exacerbate already softening business conditions.

Consumer spending has slumped this year and exports, worth 60 per cent of Thailand's US$366 billion economy, are flagging amid weak global demand. The government had pinned its hopes on offsetting those losses with record 22.3 per cent growth from January to October in tourism, a sector accounting for 9 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), and big infrastructure spending.

That could be wishful thinking. About 16 billion baht (S$626 million) has been lost through holiday cancellations this month alone, just as peak season begins, says the Tourism Ministry.

Thai protesters target PM's party headquarters



BANGKOK - Thai opposition protesters broke into the army headquarters in Bangkok on Friday, calling on the military to join their fight to bring down the government.

" Protesters slammed opened the gate and are now in the army headquarters," a military spokeswoman said, adding that the army chief was not in his office.

Thousands of demonstrators massed in the army compound urging the military to come out in support of their rallies, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

It was previously reported that hundreds of police were deployed Friday at Thailand's ruling party headquarters as defiant opposition protesters set their sights on a new high-profile target, seeking to intensify their fight to bring down the government.

Boisterous demonstrators have besieged key ministries in Bangkok in the biggest street protests since mass rallies against the previous government three years ago degenerated into the kingdom's worst civil strife in decades.

The protesters - a mix of royalists, southerners and the urban middle class sometimes numbering in their tens of thousands - are united by their loathing of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The controversial former telecoms tycoon was ousted in a coup in 2006 and lives in self-imposed exile, but he is widely believed to be the real power behind the embattled government of his younger sister, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Protesters are demanding the end of the " Thaksin regime" and want to replace the government with an unelected " people's council" .

Demonstrators announced Friday they would march to the headquarters of Yingluck's Puea Thai party, a day after cutting off the electricity to the national police headquarters in Bangkok, in their latest act of provocation against a key symbol of authority.

The move came just hours after Yingluck and her party easily won a parliamentary no confidence vote.

" We are deploying two companies of police (around 300 officers) at Puea Thai party headquarters after they asked for protection," deputy national police chief Worapong Siewpreecha told AFP.

Thai PM survives no-confidence vote



BANGKOK: Thailand's embattled Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday easily survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote against her, the house speaker said.

" Prime Minister Yingluck won the vote of confidence," said Somsak Kiatsuranont, with 297 lawmakers voting in her favour and 134 against.

Yingluck needed more than half, or 246 votes, out of the 492 votes in the lower house to survive the no-confidence vote.

The Prime Minister's Puea Thai Party and coalition partners which dominate the lower house survived the three-day debate called by the opposition over a 3.5 billion baht (US$108 million) water management scheme and financially troubled government rice intervention scheme.

The vote follows mass street protests in Bangkok by opposition protesters seeking to topple Yingluck's elected government.

The protests led to emergency security laws being invoked on Monday, after protesters forced their way inside the finance ministry and through the gates of the foreign ministry compound.

The protestors accuse Yingluck of being a puppet for her brother, the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 military coup and convicted two years later of corruption.

The unrest led by the opposition Democrat party, has plunged Thailand into its deepest political uncertainty since the last string of street protests three years ago.
