S'pore telco stocks attractively priced: HSBC
SINGAPORE : HSBC said in a report released on Tuesday that Singapore telco stocks are attractively priced. It has assumed coverage of the local telecom sector with a neutral recommendation on SingTel and M1, while maintaining an overweight status on StarHub. HSBC said its StarHub target price of S$2.92 is 28 per cent above consensus as it believes the management will raise payouts. The bank said StarHub will continue to provide the best yield despite industry challenges. Meanwhile, HSBC said it has a non-consensus view on M1 as it believes the market has priced in its broadband market share gains but perhaps not the related expenses and margin pressure. However, it does not think this move into a more competitive terrain will jeopardise M1's dividend policy. HSBC added that SingTel will find new growth a challenge and has the lowest cash dividend yield of the three stocks. However, the bank believes that relative to associate Bharti and Australia competitor Telstra, SingTel should continue to perform well because of the defensive nature of its portfolio. - CNA/al |

Singtel jump even previously it had a couple of negative Optus reviews. Nw price at 2.9 , jump 5 cents today. $3 dollars is coming soon, writes somebody. So wat does it means, govern support to push up the price despite early news. Likeat NOL, it had some real bad news but still go up to $2 despite falling to 1.5 someting couple of months ago. Proves that if they want it to go up, it will. |

HK's Sing Tao newspaper said SingTel is among bidder for a stake in China Telecom (CT), China's largest fixed-line operator. CT, which is set to obtain government approval to enter the mobile phone business, confirmed it's in talks with 5 potential strategic investors. The newspaper identified the rival bidders as NTT DoComo, France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Verizon Comms and SingTel. The paper didn't say where it got the info from. CT has applied for 1 of 3 licences that the government has said it will issue for 3G wireless services. China's number of mobile subscribers has risen almost 3x as fast as fixed-line users in the past 6 months.

Singtel shares don't seem to be too buoyed by the news of the new CEO. Its TA charts still show a downtrend.

Is zen it's better to say something like that. We R in process to review its investment in Australian subsidiary Optus and will weight all possible option available, if neccessary we'll see and take appropriate action. This sound like fitting into LSY shoes. |

Hey man, fitting into LSY's shoes is no good for investors! Singtel should get a CEO who can do much better than LSY. When HP replaced their high profile lady CEO not long ago and replaced it with a man, the company immediately made a lot of money within less than two years. That's what people expect to see in a public listed company. |

It paid $13,022.4m for Optus in Mar '01: $7,225.9m cash, $4,559.9m though the issuance of new shares, and 41,236.6m through fixed rate securities. The acquisition resulted in goodwill of $11.4b, given fair value was estimated at $1,654m, to be amortized over 20 years from Aug 31 '01. The need to make provision for impairment loss arises if the value of Optus is < $10b today (ie $13b minus amortization thus far, which is estimated at $2.85b) SingTel overpaid for Optus at the time of acquisition. Provisions for impairment losses are non-cash accounting entry. Note that DBS' price did decline on news of the $1.65b write-down on Feb 17 this year (ie for ye Dec '05), in respect of Dao Heng. But the low reached on that afternoon, of $16.10, turned out to be just above the year's low of $15.90. |

CEO Chua Sock Koong says it is not necessary at this stage to write down the value of its investment in Australian subsidiary Optus. Asked to comment on a suggestion by a Merrill Lynch analyst that Optus may have to be written down, Chua replied: "We have done an impairment review required, and based on current position [there is] no basis for any impairment right now." She explained: "The accounting standards require us to do this impairment review on a regular basis. And, when there is a triggering factor, you know, that will be done by the company." Chua was speaking to reporters shortly after the SingTel announced that she would take over as group chief executive on April 1. Chua said there was still some consolidation to come in the industry in Australia. However, she said SingTel was still optimistic about Optus, which had seen growth in its broadband business. "We do expect the mobile business to recover after the period of consolidation," she said, "so we continue to be very confident of our Australian business." |
