The reply from SMRT Investor Relations: " For the first question, the fare for each station pair is calculated based on a pre-determined logical path. Logical path refers to the most convenient route that passengers are likely to travel. For this example, Jurong East – HarbourFront, the logical path is to travel on EWL, followed by a transfer at Outram Park and continue on NEL. Fares will then be apportioned between EWL and NEL. As such, regardless of how the passenger travels, he will be charged based on the distance travelled. As for the second question, the ridership data on our website is derived from generating the number of trips made within our MRT network of NSEW and CCL. One ridership starts with an entry through a fare gate and ends with an exit through another fare gate within our MRT network. For example: An entry to ride on the CCL followed by another ride on EWL is counted as ridership on the MRT network. Or Entry to ride on NEL followed by CCL is counted as one ridership on our MRT network. SBST who runs NEL will also recognize this as one ridership on the NEL. Ridership includes those travelling on concession as well. Ridership data only captures trips made on the SMRT network"

Hi guys, I would like to understand the revenue allocation between SMRT and SBSTransit. As there are two companies running the railway (and bus) system in Singapore, what happens if a passenger boards a train on the NEL and alights at the EW line? How is this fare converted to revenues for both SMRT and SBSTransit? Furthermore,  as some stations are shared between SMRT and SBSTransit (e.g. Serangoon, Dhoby Ghaut), how would they know if a passenger is traveling on the SMRT or SBS railway. It seems that such information are not available on their website... anyone knows? thanks! |
