Agreed with both elfin & iPunter, give your utmost best shot to trade profitably... To be able to spend like as if it the end of the world but- there no tomorrow.. Aim for it and be a "big manipulator" oneself.. |

to have a headstart financially definitely makes a lot of difference--it literally buys you freedom. you can pursue careers you like, afford luxuries etc. if the next generation has to bear additional burdens....haha. we catch up by running twice as fast, aiming twice as far, working twice as hard and doing whatever it takes to leave the competition in the dust. admittedly there are some so wealthy you can't catch up, but--as i know rogue_trader will agree with me on this--i'll be damned if i don't at least give it a shot. better said by bon jovi really. "you live for the fight when it's all that you've got." or as TS Eliot said in The Wasteland: "I will show you fear in a handful of dust." |

yes, I agree with ipunter, and yes elf, if a father has a daughter who thinks like you, he is indeed blessed... ie.. it would be so cool for rickytan to give his daughter the present and for his daughter to do the things you say on her own initiative without rickytan asking for it.. |

I agree with that as a matter of moral principle... But in the real world, to have a headstart financially often makes a world of difference to the success of the next generation. If the next generation has to bear the additional financial burdens, how are they going to catch up with the rest who don't have such burdens to stifle their progress? |

hm.. i have nothing against presents, in fact i love them totally *haha*, but realistically, if your daughter has started working, why give her monetary presents? shouldn't you be asking for the repayment of university fees and all that? self confidence and independence. the kind of grace that includes all, and a backbone that depends on none. those are the best gifts you can give a daughter. :) |

dear rickytan, It is so touching to read your post "I am considering which counter should I buy as a birthday present for my daughter. In the past, I bought her handphone, wallet, etc. Now that she has started working, I told her that I would buy share as her birthday present. What stock will you buy if you are in my position ? Budget of $2,000". May I recommend that you buy Global Voice at 0.135, and hold. |

Yes, I have to agree that it is NOT a good time to enter the market now if you new to it, its really around its peak already. Moreover, with only $1000, chances are you'll end up paying brokerage fees with your profits, if u do make any that is..... |

Oh yes, before I forget. NOL is now trading at 2.5 and therefore you don't have enough to buy 1 lot since we are talking about buying with $1000 :( |

I am no expert but would advice against taking position in NOL. It has a newly installed CEO from a German logistic company (Schenker, I think). He is not tested in Asia yet. Lesson can be learnt from the previous angmoh CEO (the one b4 David Lim). His thinking was so vastly different from the then senior management that results in resignation of a few senior management (they joined NOL's rival). Before long, that angmoh was ousted for underperformance (although they had to give him a few millions $$ to ask him to go because that was before he contract ended). Besides, the shipping biz has been faced with cut-throat competition and lowering of bottomline. NOL's share price vastly underperformed as compared to STI given the broad market bull as a back drop since last July. I would give it a miss. Just my thought. |

Well edcifer , It depend which type investor you are , Go for FA if you are long term investor , buy and hunt for stock that is undervalue but the counter may not move till it is been discover . Go for TA if u can afford to monitor the market prices /volume regulary ,buy and sell when u are confident the prices is going up or down . Upgrade both skill , that's the best for u . |

Hi edcifer, I started "trading" back in JC in what is known as Hollywood Stock Exchange. (www.hsx.com) A simple fun online stock game in which you are given 2million hollywood dollars to buy any movie stocks in which their final price are based on actual returns from the actual movie. In short, I learn the ins and outs of stocks from there - things such as SHORT COVER LONG etc. It was fun. Now I have a 300million hollywood dollars account. Now I have to tell you the old mantra - you need money to make money and yes I do start with 1k too in whats know as Unit trust aka mutual funds. But that was back in 2002 and all I did was place that 1k in an index funds and simply keep on adding small amount to that account. (They called that Dollar Cost Averaging aka Reinvestment Plan etc etc) It was only in 2005 that I withdrew some of that money from my index funds (its growing but not that fantastic) and meddle into stocks. Thus far I am happy with the returns. I used to be a total FA (Fundamental Analyssss aka long term investor) until I learnt some TA(Technical Analysss) late 2006. If you ask me what you should do with 1k - I say start slow and with knowledge you gain along the way, i am sure you will do just fine. And yes, despite having shares, I still have my index funds :) (call it a retirement fund now) With Best Regards, Zul |

For birthday gift for daughter, your 2K invested in UT is better than buying ONE company shares. UT offer more stability than shares and I tink it is a wise move to let it grow throughout the years until she is financially capable to handle her own finance. UT in general is much safer and stabler than shares. Of cuz the returns not as attractive but for birthday gift, I tink stability overrides returns correct? |

Interestingly, I am considering which counter should I buy as a birthday present for my daughter. In the past, I bought her handphone, wallet, etc. Now that she has started working, I told her that I would buy share as her birthday present. What stock will you buy if you are in my position ? I would exercise EXTREME CAUTION with victorf's advice. With CFD you can lose up to 5x of 1k!!! CFD is NOT the way to go for a green horn investor. |

Heehehe.... I agree with rogue_trader.... I don't think you can do much with $1k...use that to further your skills in investing - either in TA or FA. |
