some of you would have read this from CNN. Posting it here for your convenience. ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- An explosion at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece, on Friday morning is being treated as "a very serious attack," the U.S. ambassador said. U.S. Ambassador Charles Ries said the attack injured no one and caused "minimal damage." The entire compound in downtown Athens is a crime scene, he told reporters. Police said the blast may have been caused by a rocket-propelled grenade, presumably fired at the building from across the street. Greek counterterrorism authorities and U.S. officials are working to uncover who is behind the attack, Ries said. U.S. and Greek officials immediately began inspecting the area and nearby buildings to see where the attack could have originated. "There can be no justification for such a senseless act of violence," Ries said. The only damage visible from outside the embassy was a window blown out on an upper floor. Police sealed all entrances and exits to the embassy and cordoned off the block around the compound, causing an almost complete standstill of traffic during the morning rush hour. Chaos erupted inside the embassy after the explosion occurred at about 6 a.m. (11 p.m. ET Thursday), an embassy staff member said. The heavily guarded embassy in Athens has been the site of protests in the past. It was the target of a rocket-propelled grenade attack in February 1996. That attack caused minor damage. The militant group November 17 carried out numerous attacks in Greece between 1975 and 2002. The Marxist group claimed responsibility for killing 23 people, many of them U.S. and Greek officials -- as well as bombings, bank robberies and rocket attacks. (Read about November 17) Its apparent successor, Revolutionary Struggle, has also claimed responsibility for attacks and espoused anti-American sentiments. |

This news was reported ~1.30+pm. No casualties in the US embassy blast in Athens. Hence a good news. Aniwae, consider a stirlpool in a teaport. A minor event after the 'many' big events seen for the past few years. |
